Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Speaking of spoilers, Harrison Ford just tweeted one. So unless you go on media blackout, there's an inevitability you will come across what some may consider spoilers now that we are less then 13 days out. And I why personally I think a draconian view of spoiler avoidance while trying to be engaged in social media is foolhardy. You can make it almost to the end and then it's all for naught.

Yeah I saw that too. I was surprised they let that out. I figured there would be handlers and such keeping an eye on that sort of thing. In fact, I assumed they weren't actually personally tweeting but dictating to someone that was.

I'm glad GL liked the movie. I could've almost seen him saying something snarky like "it was okay, but not what I would've done", leading to some trying to say this isn't a "real" SW movie. With him talking about how they didn't use his ideas, I was worried things might go down that path.

I hope Uncle George's reaction is sincere and not spin or damage control. $4 billion is a lot of money.

4 billion is not a crazy amount to either party.

I was shocked when I heard that number. Disney has already made it back (from what I've read)

I'd say it was a fire sale.
Especially since lucas donated it all to charity

No, Disney has not recouped that cost yet.

Considering the raw candor of his CBS interview, I would doubt that.

I can't imagine that they've recouped that cost yet. They're investing a lot of money into the Star Wars franchise - movies, theme parks and the like. While they've had Star Wars for 3 years now, I don't know if they could've sold enough merch just yet (especially as they are also putting money into it) - this is a long time project.

I wouldn't be surprised if Uncle George felt some pressure after those recent comments - after all that $4 billion is a ton of cash (he is supposed to give 'most' of it away). ...and he still has kids that are working in the industry.

Remember, all that merchandise isn't them. It's license money. Hasbro pays them to sell the product. All of that tie-advertising is just printing money for them. They just have to approve it.

Here's an idea. Everyone stay away from Force Awakens threads and stop reading up on it if you don't want spoilers. I myself can't help it and could care less about spoilers. This bickering is pointless!!! [emoji14]

i thought i read somewhere that he was quoted " now each of my kids can be a billionaire, and the rest i will donate to charities" 3 kids, that leaves 1 billion in donations

i also thought he built his star wars movie museum off the money he got from disney..

i know for sure i read the first part, was it true? idk but i clearly remember reading it years ago

I believe he was worth 7 billion before the sale. And I had read that he was donating $4 billion to films chools.

Not sure how accurate this may be... but, supposedly he's worth $5.1billion - he was worth $7.3 after the sale.

Forbes lists him at a slightly higher $5.4 billion.

Forbes is more reliable but even they base evaluation on a lot of variable metrics. I think, as does most Wall Street analysts, that the purchase price of LucasFilm reflected a fair valuation for the property as it was at the time. Since then Disney has put a VERY sizeable amount of additional money into the franchise, from the $400-500M to make TFA, to Rebels and marketing and the massive new themearl attraction. Not to mention Rogue One and Ep. VIII. So again, no, Disney has not recouped their cost and won't after TFA is released assuming a $3B box office.

How did they get $400+ into this first movie? Was that including all the marketing? The pre-production work on the next two, the rest of the francise in general, etc?

They suggest that it cost $200 million to make the movie. That doesn't seem to cover the promotion of the fim.... which often seems to double production cost; but, that also doesn't seem to cover the prices paid for licensing --- which is most likely a pretty penny and helps with marketing (ie, how many commercials are from licensees vs. actual commercials for the film?)
