I've seen a lot of gnashing of teeth on io9 about that too. I mean, I think TFA will have similarities to ANH, but since when is that such a bad thing? There's a whole heck of a lot worse things that could happen.

In the Spoiler thread now the complaint is because TFA has a cantina scene with music it's a rehash of ANH. I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried.

And how many of us here saw "The Magnificent Seven" long before we saw Kurasawa's "Seven Samurai"?
You'll live, guys.
Get over it.
"Star Wars" wasn't exactly an original story, either.

There is a children's book with spoilers I have erased all details I had in this post before if you wanna see just go to your local store and get the interactive children's book for the force awakens
I stopped reading after that and ran away far away .

I think if you watch one interview with JJ Abrams regarding the new Star Wars film, this is the ONE to watch at this point. This is an interview that will reassure you how how much he gives a damn about this series and this film, A MUST watch interview, it's about a half an hour but please watch if you can! I can understand if this movie is an homage to other films. That's what star wars was and it actually helped it's credibility.

But being an homage to another star wars film? That's pretty much what star trek into darkness did and it's a truly awful idea that guys in suits think is a good idea.

It's like some of you have never actually watched any Star Wars films. The entire saga is based on well worn narrative archetypes, Heroes journey, derivative story telling. Most feature young heroes and old mentors, a journey or quest, stops along the way with strangers both friend and foe. Especially the first film in the previous two trilogies.

And be we have a cantina in ANH, Jabba's palace throne room in ROTJ, a bar in AOTC, why should it be shocking that there is a pub at Maz's castle?

Agree ! I (re) watch the entire saga waiting for the release of the new episode and all the narrative archetypes are obvious. More over, all episodes have some connections in terms of details or scenes like said before. I mean, the "I've got a bad feeling about this", a bar (not in all ep but it's clearly redondant), cutting a hand, bounty hunters, a party at the end of the first episode of a trilogy and a not so happy end for the second one.

I think that what makes Star Wars is the (along with some other things of course) way the story is told. And that need to stay with the new episodes too.
But that's is just my point of view ;)

Just because two previous SW trilogies have included something, that doesn't mean it is automatically necessary or even a good idea. Doing something familiar a second time in a row is interesting. But doing it again for a 3rd time pushes it fully into zero-surprise territory.

Would it be a good idea if TFA included a sentence at the end of the opening crawl saying: "WARNING: One of the main good guys will tragically die 2/3rds of the way through this film"? This is basically what the audience's experience has become when it's the 3rd time in a row.

I'm not saying it's categorically always a bad idea to do anything a 3rd time. But when something is very predictable then it needs to really earn its right to be there. The bar is much higher for justifying than before.

But that's how you create meaningful drama, when the stakes are high and the audience is fearful of impending doom of characters they are connected to. And GL always said that the story of Star Wars rhymes.

No, the complaint is that the cantina scene is yet ANOTHER piece of evidence, among many, that this is an ANH rehash. Just like, I dunno, Into Darkness was a Wrath of Khan rehash? Possibly there's legitimate reason to be concerned that this movie will be nothing but a nostalgia stroke?

However, I remain optimistic and excited. But it would be nice if those of us who point out the endless callbacks to the OT and worry that it might be pandering aren't treated like brain damaged apes by certain rather condescending members.

Hey I laughed out loud at your MFA fecal smearing comment, that was inspired. :)

Let's consider the non-spoiler aspects of what we have read and seen so far in regards to story and character. There are certainly story elements which TFA shares with the other films. Things as obvious as droids, cantinas, super weapons, light sabers, ect. The iconography as well. But let's look at the main characters. This film flies or dies by the strength of these characters and just looking at Rey and Finn they are entirely unique to our previous experiences. The obvious comparison one may try and make is between Rey and Luke, but beyond them both living in a desert they couldn't be less alike. Luke had a surrogate family and was suffering from wanderlust. Rey is much more grounded and serious, she isn't looking towards the stars, she is just surviving until something maybe caused her to awaken and embrace some destiny she has been fighting against. Finn has no correlation to any previous character as someone who starts off with the bad guys and apparently has his own awakening.

And this all assumes you haven't read the story synopsis spoiler which really deviates from the ANH formula in more respects then it mirrors it.

On another topic, has anyone seen the insane amount of merchandising for Star Wars and this movie in particular? I've gone to Kohls twice in the past few months and they probably have the most Star Wars and TFA stuff of any store that I've seen so far. Not only do they have Star Wars & TFA toys but they also have clothes, household, accessories, and just about everything else you can put the Star Wars name and iconography onto. Two things that I found interesting are pair of masks, one Vader and one Chewie that have "voice changers" built into them, the Vader makes you sound (supposedly, I tried it but I could only hear myself) like Vader and the Chewie ones makes Wookie noises when you pull down the lower jaw, makes me wonder if anybody here plans on buying one and stripping out the electronics to add to their own costumes. Regardless, seeing all of this Star Wars merchandise makes me feel like a kid again, although I can't honestly recall if there was even close to this amount of merchandise when the OT first came out.
