Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

As bad as I think the prequels are, I don't see any need to remake them or erase them from canon. They weren't an essential backstory when IV/V/VI were made, so it's easy enough to simply disregard it, and only reuse elements from here on out that work or are necessary.
For example, I could see them never mentioning midichlorians ever again, since they were never mentioned in the OT, and likely an all but forgotten concept by now given the state of the Jedi. Same deal with a lot of the PT, actually. Since the OT was made first, obviously the PT wasn't essential to telling that story, and won't be essential to telling the continuing story either. The only time it even matters is if something contradicts what is in the PT, which I don't see being an issue for the reasons mentioned. Just because the PT was executed poorly, doesn't mean that any mention of it would be bad anyway, so I don't even see it being a problem, even for the anthology movies.

I'd have to watch it again. I was half-paying attention until they started singing, but my impression was he was downplaying it the way he does a lot of things. *shrug* I still suggest you do a bit of listening. As with most artists, I don't like everything they do, but I do like a lot.

It's like someone actually put together a GOOD Star Wars script. Until now, I thought that idea had died off in the 80's.

"We've got one!" "You?!"

and

"I can do this." "I can do this."

are both great moments.

I've been staying away from any and all TV spots and trying not to read into anything that I see on accident. I want to truly be surprised and not know what to expect. (Mostly).

But being on the subject of rebooting the prequels etc. I don't think that's necessary. What's done is done. Some like them, some don't. I'm hit or miss myself. Always be an OT type of guy. Hopefully JJ will make me a NT type as well. (New Trilogy. Not sure what we are calling it yet.) As someone already said there are so many other stories that could be told using books as guidance or just new ideas. All that would need to be done is change the venue or time frame. I personally would love an Old Republic trilogy of some sort. Darth Bane or Raven would be great, but there is so much that could be done simply by changing the time. That's when you get into little Easter eggs or drop hints at the PT/OT/NT. Explain the rule of two or how Palpatine was found or do something about the Mandilorian warriors etc. Too much to need a reboot.

The Rogue One movie is a prime example. Sure, we all like lightsabers and Jedi etc. But imagine, changing the venue of the film and have it be almost like a Star Wars - War film. Guys in the trenches or dog fighting space battles. A Star Wars Band of Brothers. Just thinking out loud.....or typing anyways.

I have a series (formed only in my head) about a group of imperials (and a couple rebel survivors) left to "clean up" after the battle of hoth. They get captured by scavengers and after their long imprisonment, they turn into mercenaries with no allegiance to anyone. I have like, 3 seasons of this plotted out....in my head

I'm in the camp of not visiting the time frames we know. Visit what we don't know. The timeline goes back to what? 3000+ years prior to ANH, plus it can extend, essentially forever. That's a whole lot of room to work with.

If you want to do something else, do it, but you keep the universe and choose a different time. Go back the advent of the Jedi/Sith....what exactly did Palpatine want revenge for? How was the republic forged originally? Etc...there's lots of things untapped.

"For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic." Assuming people live longer in the Star Wars universe, and the average age women have children at nudges a bit later than where we are now... That's over 25,000 years of space-faring, galaxy-spanning civilization, to say nothing of whatever was there before the Jedi Knights existed, or before they got in tight with the Republic, or whatever.

Endless possibilities.

You could do an entire series of Mandilorian warriors. Not just Boba Fett, but others. Show a truly dark and evil dark side. Some of the books talk about how Sith were more sorcerers then fighters. Creating nightmares you could see and feel. Go back to when there were armies of Jedi and Sith fighting. I go back to Bane trilogy a lot because it's one of my favorite book series that I think would translate well to the big screen given the proper attention.

I've heard of talk about a Han Solo spin off. At first glance I'm like cool, but then I begin to think about it and you limit yourself to a 10-15 year timeframe before ANH and when he was saved from slavery etc. Then you have an issue of continuity. Making sure they all line up. New characters help this issue. Rogue One: alternate heroes on a battlefield. Showing a different side. Mandilorians. A very under explored race on the big screen.

I think some ideas, like Rogue One, are on the right track, but I pray they widen their time frame to open new possibilities.

Liam Neeson wants to do a Qui-Gon movie. I'd like to see a Qui-Gon movie, but it will never happen. It would be nice to see some more of that world, with someone else at the helm.

I can just imagine it, a young Obi-Wan is kidnapped and held for ransom, the comm Qui-Gonn and he advises them to let him go because if they don't, he'll use his special skills to hunt them down and make them regret kidnapping his padawan.
