Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

My boy kept asking why Anakin was killing the children, I said to save Padme, but even as I was saying it, it didn't seem like a good enough reason.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I pray that Abrams is just feeding us misdirection.

The thing is, hammill has been on the receiving end of jokes for a lot of his post-star wars career.

But as soon as I saw that picture of him and his badass beard, he was my hero again.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

How to Train Your Dragon 2 isn't even out on Blu Ray until November - could we keep other movie spoilers out of this thread?

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

My son was devastated when Anakin turned in ROTS. He saw what he did and just looked at me and said "dad I don't like him anymore". He was literally disgusted in him. Especially him killing younglings and choking Padme.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Its one of the big problems with EpIII, Anakin has to turn evil because he was evil in episode IV.

Slaughtering the sand people and beheading Tyranus being 1 and 2 did not automatically make, kill jedi children 3.

There needed to be more steps than that, something more logical than "to save my wife and kid, I will kill everyones elses kid"

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

The problem I'd have with this plot twist is that it diminishes the sacrifice of Vader at the end of ROTJ.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Absolutely. The first 6 films serve a character arc. A tragedy, ending with anagnorsis. Changing Luke would undermine the entire series thus far

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Even though every fiber of my being wants Luke to be a hero, this could be a very compelling story. And let's keep in mind this is just the first film of a three film arc.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Luke ain't that cyborg guy. His "contractually obligated beard" - which is definitely his - does not fit at all with that character's appearance. Nor does his height, body type, anything about him. That theory is admittedly total conjecture on that site's part; I wouldn't put too much stock in it.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I really hope Luke as the bad guy is just a bad rumor and totally untrue. It just dilutes the original stories and comes off as lazy storytelling by JJ and his people. I'm already disappointed by rumors that the Empire is still a significant part of this story - this just really kills a lot of enthusiasm I have for the whole thing.

I'm still holding hope and struggling with wanting more rumors and theories... I want to love this movie and I want to have some surprise as well. But, the thirst for more about it is strong, too.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

If Luke did turn, it would be a thousand times more emotional than the pathetic attempt to get us to feel for Anakin in the PT. The idea behind Anakins turn was to make us feel for him, that "our" hero fell...well the PT had no emotion, and sucked. But now imagine if our real childhood hero, Luke fell/turned? Most of us spent so much time wanted to be Luke everytine we played Star Wars as kids. It would be devastating and hard to accept, and we wouldn't want to believe it. This is a character so beloved we would be left dumbfounded and emotionally drained, which is exactly the emotion that the PT was supposed to convey. It could work, just based on the reactions so far, it doesn't sit well, because Luke is a hero.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

...but then remember Disney invested "billions" in SW and making Luke bad is not a good way to start off a new trilogy and appeal to fans of the OT and try to make SW relevant again, it would be like telling us Hello Kitty is not a cat ;)

It would be an interesting twist, I just don't see Disney doing this in their first SW feature film of a new trilogy and with such a HUGE character.

I remember them days a long, long time ago, when hardly anyone ever had a home computer, and a certain newspaper got hold of a story ,reported ABSOLUTELY true, with photographic evidence even, that in the sequel to Star Wars Luke Skywalker killed Darth Vader by cutting off his head. AND WE ALL KNOW HOW THAT TURNED OUT! So I kind of smile when I hear all these rumours floating around. Wait and see is what I say.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Right, it may not necessarily ruin the whole movie, but it still robs the audience of that pure moment of surprise and discovery which was supposed to be experienced during the narrative.

Gotta say that I don’t really relish the idea of the story going in this direction - but, playing devil’s advocate for a moment:

I always thought the phrase “contractually obligated beard” was a bit odd. Since when does a contract require an actor to grow a beard for a movie role? As we all know, many (if not most) times you see facial hair on an actor in a film, it’s an appliance - either a full fake beard/mustache or sprayed on “flocking” for stubble. There’s not much reason to actually put in a contract “if you want this role, you must grow a beard.” If the actor doesn’t want to grow one, the make-up department just puts one on and takes it off at the end of the day.

However - if you wanted someone to grow a beard to wear off-the-set, so that all publicly-seen photos show the actor as bearded, perhaps to make people expect a bearded look in the film rather than a mask . . . well. . . . .
