Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Im glad they have good ppl on it. Its just that the film needs to be extremely well done to work. The story is finished after ROTJ, so inventing everything with the same feel is pretty hard.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I still can't see where they're going to go with the stories, I haven't heard any ideas that make me go "Yes that's what I want to see". I stand by I want practical effects more than CGI. The OT feels "real" like the worlds are lived in, the PT still feels like the actors are stood infront of a green screen, there's TOO MUCH Cgi in the PT for me.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

From what I've heard Kasdan asked George if he could write and Direct Episode I. But 'ol George turned him down. If he had written and Directed the first Episode history would probably be much different. Perhaps George has seen the error of his ways.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Incredibly awesome news!

Saying that, a lot of Empire wasn't him... same goes for Raiders.

I'll agree with that. While I think wonderful things can be done with CG if done properly, the prequels seemed a lot less "tangible" because of it. There are certain things that are less practical with physical sets, such as the Coruscant cityscape, but there are clearly times it's overdone and pointless, like making Clone Troopers out of CG. I don't know what GL's purpose was there but they became exponentially less believable by having been CG renders. Having said that, the technology has come a very long way since Episode III, so wherever it might be applied in Episode VII, if it's in the right hands hopefully we won't even notice...

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I think all the worry about too much CGI is needless this time.

The prequels had more CGI and less tangible footage than the majority of action/adventure movies coming out today. And Hollywood is well aware that audiences don't want any more of it than necessary these days. No other modern producers/directors are gonna want to put prequel-levels of CGI in it.

GL just wanted so much CGI because that stuff was his new toolbox and it allowed him to play with everything more. He wanted animation-level control & cheap production costs. In 2013 Lucas is not gonna care how much of the sets & props are practical or CGI. Not now that somebody else is directing, editing, and writing all the checks.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Wow, can you imagine if we actually got an honest-to-God good Star Wars movie? It completely boggles the mind. I think back on my life and realize I haven't seen a SW movie that I truly thought was great since 1980!!..Yeah, I like Jedi but even when it came out, and I was 18 years old, I knew it was all over by that time--too many burping muppets and Ewok slapstick.

I had such high hopes for the prequals. I spent three years waiting for each of them on the edge of my seat. I felt let down each time. Sorry, but I will be pessimistic until I actually see the new movie. I yearn so much for a Star Wars movie that makes me go "Whoa, that was truly AWESOME!!" At this point I simply hope for just a "good" one. Getting something that is the same caliber as ANH or Empire is something that is just beyond the scope of my mental optimism. These days I believe pigs will fly and Hell will freeze over before we get another super incredible SW movie............But, oh how I hope I am wrong...

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Regarding CGI versus practical: I feel like it needs to be alot like the Iron Man movies in that respect. As much practical as possible, but CG where you just can't get realism from practical.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Oh, well crap. The day I've been dreading is here: I am officially excited about this now. There's a real writer, who actually understands the pulp language of serials on the job. Eh, I'm not a fan of the Bracket treatment at all, and I'd give Raiders a 'hell yeah!' for the writing so..wow. Something actually positive has happened on this project. I remember around the time in the lead up to TPM where Kazdan spoke about Lucas approaching him to write the prequels. He declined, saying he was a director now, and wasn't writing other people's stuff. So if he doesn't like to write anyone elses' stuff now...anyone think we may also have found our director?

Alternatively, Guillermo Del Toro has said some...interestingly vague things in the last day or so about not being approached, at least not officially, yet by LFL for the gig. Which is to say they have talked to him about it. Which FURTHER means we have our first A-list director who admits he's talked about it in some capacity, and not only hasn't yet officially declined, is talking about the possibility of the job with some enthusiasm.

Ooooh...it's 1997 all over again :wacko

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Nothing is ever gonna live up to ANH or ESB, simply because it won't be a decades-old classic when it comes out. It will be a new movie and thus more fallible.

They could release a movie that is literally just as good as ANH and ESB. It still won't rank that high in our minds. Our expectations really need to be kept in check.
