Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Lucas, I believe, is on record saying that Luke (or Anakin?) brought "balance to the Force" by killing the Emperor and defeating the Sith. I'm not entirely sure how that creates "balance" exactly, but that's what the dude said.

That's what I was referring to basically... Anakin turns back to the light side then kills the last remaining Sith Lord.

Right, but it calls into question how that qualifies as "balance" exactly. Is only the light side considered "balance"? Is it a numerical thing? Is it balance within Anakin? Lucas never really explains it, and it's the kind of thing that nobody was around to push him on.

In the old days, someone like Marcia or Gary or Irv would've said "Yeah, but George, what the hell does that mean?" Then George would've tried to explain it and they'd said "Oh, wait. I get what you mean. You don't mean 'restore balance.' You mean 'return light to the galaxy.' THAT's what the Skywalkers do, and it'd also explain why the Jedi are so confused about the prophecy -- they live in what they think is a time of 'light', miss the threats under their nose, think Anakin is the 'chosen one,' but misunderstand that he's ALSO the guy who ushers in the 'dark times,' and it's him siring Luke that leads to the return of light to the galaxy." And then George would say, "Right. That's what I said."

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I think of it like a yin yang. To balance the force, one has to understand the dark and the light, but not become obsessed with either. Have balance in yourself, not the numerical balance in population of those practicing. Luke found a way to balance both sides in himself and had true command of the force.

Ben was the man, and I always liked how Qui Gon didn't care about the council, but Luke was the best.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Yeah, it's....rather open to interpretation (putting it mildly...).

Another good reason to largely disregard the prequels.

Don't know who photoshopped this but I saw it, I think it's great and I think it deserves to be in here:

Meh. Wouldn't break my heart if he did. I still think he'd do a better job at Star Wars than Star Trek, though.

Feel the same way.

As for all this "balance to the force" crap. I don't take the prequels into account at all when thinking about EP7. I think it's best for everyone. :lol

devincf: Re: JJ Abrams leaving STAR WARS. I don't think it will happen, but I'm not the only one hearing this. Conflicts are about...

devincf:... shooting location and schedule. Abrams develops things slowly and Disney needs him to rush.

Maybe Joe Johnston will be back on the table. Too bad Brad Bird is still doing Tomorrowland, of course he expressed that he wanted to do an original film this time instead.

Yeah. Like I said, you can try to analyze it after the fact...but the bottom line is it's just another screwed up plot point that Lucas half-assed.

I'd be good with Johnston. He was there for the OT, Raiders, and Temple of Doom. He's directed some stuff I enjoy that has a sort of "old school" style like The Rocketeer and Captain America. I expect he'd understand and respect the franchise, particularly having seen what worked the first time around.

I only mentioned it for that reason precisely. I don't the Luke or Leia would feel beholden to those old ways.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I'm sure it will.... but he is such a huge Star Wars fan... if he is dropping out... doesn't give me a good feeling about the direction Disney is wanting to go.

I know; me too. But since Disney actively sought him to direct the movie, I can't see why they'd be giving him a hard time about how he directs. Maybe it's just an unsubstantiated rumor. I've been hopeful about him, but I can't see it falling apart if he's indeed opting out.

If it has any credibility, which I highly doubt, I think it would be because of the schedule demand and shooting location in England. JJ was very open about not wanting to relocate his family. But I doubt this is about creative differences if it is true....which I doubt. :)

Maybe they had something like Mary Poppins in mind and heard JJ composed the opening music for Lost and Alias.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Honestly, while I will certainly go see Ep.VII, I am really over Star Wars.
The market was so over-saturated for so long during and after the prequels, it's just not "special" anymore.

All it takes is one great movie to make it special again.
