Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release) (Spoilers)

I don't like the electro staff trooper. I think it's a dumb idea. I've read the speculation in the threads about the need for troops trained to fight Jedi. It just doesn't seem consistent to me. Rey obviously thinks Jedi were/are a myth from what we've seen in the trailer.

Why would a military invest so much resources into training and equipping soldiers with a weapon that has little likelihood of ever being needed escapes me. Plus a real trained Jedi could cut these guys down easily. The concept seems unnecessary to me. The clones didn't need these weapons to kill Jedi when Order 66 was initiated. They shot many Jedi down with blasters.[emoji12]

Who's to say there weren't more Jedi around....Or maybe they don't exactly trust Kylo and have taken precautions against him with this weapon ....

Because this military is being led by a saber wielding Knight of Ren who is on a mission to hunt down the most powerful Jedi ever.

I don't consider Luke the most powerful jedi ever. Maybe the most powerful jedi alive at the time of this movie. But not all time greatest....

Many powerful jedi went down in the arena on Geonosis in AOTC. No fancy weapons were needed. Blaster fire did the trick.:popcorn

I think it is the same as putting a bayonet on a rifle. Its' useless unless you come hand to hand combat then it is a lifesaver. Same principle here, blasters are perfect for taking down Luke from a distance but if they came face to face with him they would have to defend themselves from the lightsaber or die. Hence the electro staff weapon. Seems logical.

There's another possibility: whoever is in charge of the First Order may not entirely entirely trust Snoke and his lackey, Kylo Ren. Wouldn't you want troops armed with anti-lightsaber weapons...just in case?

I always watched that scene with the impression these were some Jedi Masters and Knights, but also a lot of Palawan's. It was a rushed rescue mission and I could see them being overwhelmed with to many numbers. The Jedi as invincible never was my view. I liked that they were beaten back. It speaks to the hubris of the PT Jedi, they weren't as good as they thought.
