Star Wars: questions you've always wanted answers for

Age wouldnt be that wrong. Gwen Christie is approaching 40 and Cindel was around 5 in those movies 30 years ago. Build and temperament can change quite a bit in 30 years. I don't think she is Phasma but not for those reasons. I'm not saying Ewoks couldn't speak Basic but it makes no sense for them to speak it and then just randomly decide not to in ROTJ. If you go by the old canon that the movies occurred before ROTJ, that is...
 
Maybe the Ewoks weren't speaking Common but Ewokese(?) that's been dubbed over into Common, sort of like how the Universal Translator works. Better yet, like movies set in a foreign country where we know that they're supposed to be speaking their native language even though they're speaking in English; Enemy at the Gates is a good example of this, we know it's set in Russia and they're supposed to be speaking Russian even though all of the dialog is in English.
 
You know, this is why I love this forum so much.

I ask a question that would get me laughed off of the forums most places (I love the Ewok movies, they were my first exposure to Star Wars!), and now we're having an awesome conversation debating when the movies should take place, how they spoke Basic, and if it's possible for Cindel to be Phasma.


For the language issue, I would guess that Riceball is close, but not quite. The Towani weren't speaking Basic, but their planet's native language, which the Ewok's picked up a few words of from them while they were there. Which is why they didn't recognize Basic when Leia spoke it.
 
Star Wars has never done anything like that as far as I can recall, and it's not something they remotely indicate is the case in either of those movies but I guess it's always possible? I don't know what Leland Chee's take is but I guess the more streamlined explanation would be that the movies simply take place sometime after ROTJ.

Also, something i've been wondering about. is there a site that has a list of all the 'legends' books released since 1991 by year/pub date? I think i've finally got them all read, but i want to make sure i've kept up on them all. there where not many books released this year.
I've only got scoundrels and A new Dawn left to read and I think i'll have read everything released since 1991 minus the horror novels.

If Force users can lift rocks and spaceships and such, why don't they just use the Force on themselves and fly?
 
Its more like trying to give yourself a leg up, although there is no reason I guess why two Jedi couldn't lift each other up.

Works in the lego games anyway.

Yoda does … more or less. As stated earlier, I presume that doing this sort of thing for a sustained period is exhausting.

It does bring up my question, though … if it is true that "size matters not" when using the Force, why aren't Yoda and Sidious throwing planets or even stars at one another in RotS, rather than senate pods? And why does Palpatine need the Death Star? I get that it exists more to sow terror than death, per se, but wouldn't Palpatine be able to do that just as well -- if not more so -- if he could reach out and crush a planet with the Force?

Yoda needs to stop lying. That's the real answer.

The reason why Palpatine never seemed to do anything seriously overt like crushing planets with the Force is because he doesn't want people to know that he's Sith and has Force powers. It's one thing to have Vader going around using the Force but for him to do so openly is entirely different. I suppose that he could do it and just say that Vader did it but I guess that he has his reasons for not doing so. What they would be I have no idea except for maybe the coordination needed, he'd need some alone time to do it, time when nobody is around, no guards, no toadies to see him do it, and then he needs time when Vader is free to make show at "crushing a planet".
 
Yeah I think there's a limit to Yoda's quote. I don't want it taken literally like Starkiller pulling down a Star Destroyer in The Force Unleashed or several Jedi doing something similar in the horrible Jedi Academy books. Everyone always says Yoda barely lifts Luke's X-Wing, but I still think it is within his "size matters not" thing. I think Yoda was just taking a breath after exerting himself in that scene.
 
I took the measure of ability to be more related to how much one could truly concentrate and become "in tune" with the Force. I think that's the limitation. A masterful Force user can do more because they have trained to not be distracted and keep that connection, even in a chaotic environment. I think anything is theoretically possible with the Force but no one has ever reached the means to actually be able to crush a planet or what have you. Perhaps that level of concentration and mental fortitude isn't even mentally possible in most sentient beings? The movies highlight this to some degree (including Yoda's admonitions to "concentraaaaate!"). This is why Luke struggles to retrieve a lightsaber in TESB and yet Yoda can move an X-wing with ease. Not sure why anyone would say he "barely" does it. At that point in TESB Luke is still contending with the "white noise" of an inexperienced Jedi and was just beginning to really be able to reach that calm place that is needed.

Speaking of moving heavy things, in Yoda versus dooku , dooku dramatically severs the base of the giant column to land on Anakin and Ben to distract Yoda so he can escape,
what does Yoda do, use the force to stop the pillar , something with a mass of I'm guessing 5 or 6 tons, when he could have drawn Anakin and Ben away from the danger much quicker and continued chasing Dooku.

Or better yet, he Could have sat that column on top of dooku's ship.

That was one of the things that the clone wars got right. People would concentrate fire and/or the force on destroying the chance to escape

You mean weight of 5 or 6 tons, mass and weight are not the same things and are not interchangeable. But anyway, you do make a good point.
