Star Wars films to get 3D re-release starting in 2012

(Breaking my own rule here about never posting in threads that have no point in the opening thread but instead just tell others to "Discuss":rolleyes)

Not surprised to see all the bitching about this here with this crowd but I am always happy to see SW on the big screen and look forward to these. Plus I have some young nieces and nephews that were not able to see anything but Revenge of the Sith on the big screen just because they were born a little late so this will be great for them to see them in a theater.:thumbsup

I know my kids who will be 6 and 4 at that time will laugh at that. At least I'll have the pleasure of seeing my boys laugh.

My nephews will be 3 and 5 at that point. Should be a great way to intro them to the movies, well, at least the 5 year old. Too bad it's E1 first...

Granted, converted movies in 3D aren't as good as what's done in 3D from the get go, but there's a chance they're using a difference procedure or taking the time to do it much better. They've got 2 years (and i'm sure they started a while ago) to get the process right or at least better. Most flicks that do the 2D to 3D conversion do it in a couple of months or so, not over a span of years.

Whoa really guys? If this was before the prequel era you'd all be freaking excited to hear your favorite three films are coming out in 3D.

Commercial 3D movie-theater technology has seen substantial improvements in the past 5 years. Pick a clean movie theater, that appears to keep up with things. Hopefully this will reflect their attention to regular maintenance, specifically projection staff changing lamps. You need a lot of light coming out of the projector because there will be some sort of filter the image passes through to create the 3D effect. A bright image is a must, or nothing will really pop out at you.

3D in your theater is here to stay. Sorry guys, not just a fad anymore. The movie theater industry has embraced it and in most cases its only a one button push back to 2D mode.

When the time comes I'll be looking for Dolby or Real D. Too bad that won't be until 2015.

For the record:
Hate the prequels
Not too fond of OT tampering
Still want to see 3D versions (OT)

By the way I finally found my red/blue 3d glasses and saw the 3d CG fanfilm of Han & Chewie "dropping their cargo". I watched it on my 50" plasma and was very impressed. It was a fun 5 minutes.

Yeah, I'll go see 'em. The addition of 3-D may or may not prove to be an enhancement to the experience, but at least they'll be on the big screen again.

From Zap2it.com...
"If you've ever wondered what Princess Leia's cinnamon-roll hairdo looks like in three dimensions, you're in luck.
Lucasfilm has announced that it's giving all six "Star Wars" movies another rerelease, this time in 3-D. "The Phantom Menace" will be first on the slate, with a release due in 2012, Variety reports.
The company has been hinting for several years that it might do 3-D versions of the saga, and the recent boom in 3-D films led to the announcement late Tuesday. John Knoll, the visual effects supervisor for Industrial Light & Magic, is overseeing the conversion and tells Variety, "It's not going to look like [other 3-D conversions] we've seen in the past."
One thing the new versions won't contain is more playing around with the original trilogy's visual effects. "Star Wars" mastermind George Lucas updated a number of effects shots for the 1997 rerelease of "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi," to the displeasure of a lot of fans.
Lucasfilm hasn't determined the timing of all six 3-D releases yet. It will depend in part on how quickly the conversion from two dimensions goes."

If they do a 2D release at the same time, I'll go for sure.

Oh yeah, for certain. I HATE 3D. My kids will want to go, so I'll be paying a big upcharge for a migraine. Yay.

I must admit, I'm curious if Lucas will take the opportunity to trim the fat on TPM and AOTC. If he released a "special-edition" edit that made the pacing better, he'd be my friggin hero. I mean, I WANT to like those movies. I also hope AOTC is the theatrical release, without Padme's awful "to be angry" line.

I've seen the 3 minute 3D test of A New Hope (Tantive scenes) and I have to say there was something amazing about it. Like meeting a dead relative again or something. I can't describe it really. Something you know so well re-animated and more alive than you ever saw.
As for Phantom Menace, I couldn't care less.

Aw man.... so THIS is what the Mayans didn't mention about 2012 being the end of the world. The re-release of Phantom Menace is what starts the domino effect! We probably won't be seeing the day of the OT hitting theaters. :D
