Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

After watching all the trailers posted, I formally apologize for trying to defend this show in prior posts.

I was really hoping that the creators of this new show were going to attempt to align this closer to the Trek of the past. I feel like past series started with the focus on story over the characters, letting their characters develop slowly over the course of the series. Seems like NuTrek want you to know every character's backstory and force their unique traits upon the viewer right from the start.

And even if it wasn't always the case, I feel that Trek usually tried to avoid modern coloqialisms and trends to create more of a timeless universe, which may be why a lot of the past Trek feel less "of the time" to me than these NuTrek iterations. Before I get lambasted, yes, I know there were plenty of 60s looking costumes, hair and makeup used on TOS. TNG had its share of 80s looks at the beginning too, but it settled into a look and feel that felt separate from the 80s and 90s, which continued in the subsequent series and movies.

NuTrek seems like they want everything to be current and trendy, like making everyone speak and act casually will automatically update the Trek universe and make it fresh for the times. But that's exactly what makes it feel dated, or will make it feel dated in just a few years from now when the trends have changed. There was a lot of informality allowed among previous Trek crews, but really only up to a point. There was still largely an adherence to and respect for the chain of command. It feels like lazy writing to try to have everyone riffing at every chance, and often undercuts the seriousness of scenes. Plus, there's a lot of interactions that feel forced, like they're trying to inject drama and conflict in situations that shouldn't have any. Trying to force every character to be unique and quirky has the opposite effect of feeling like everyone is the same, like they're all just two dimensional characters.

The contrast is striking, isn’t it? Roddenberry and his team wanted to engage with the intelligent audience they knew was out there, and never took to lecturing or insulting them.

The modern production team doesn’t care one whit about the audience, and does nothing but lecture and insult them.

Again speaking to the cleverness of TOS—they employed subtle methods to indicate future trends, such as the pointy men’s sideburns and Janice Rand’s basket-weave/beehive look. Nothing too crazy, yet just enough to be different.

Flash-forward to now, and it’s become rooted very much in present-day, with the half-shaved, lobotomy/mentally-ill, “Look at me! I’m a SJW Feminist!” haircuts, and bouffants that action figures can surf on.

Pike looks like he’s sitting under a morbidly obese cat. And that chick in the other photo looks like Himmler.

Maybe they’ll rip off ALIEN next, and have a ship’s cat…who likes to sit on Pike’s head.

Or maybe Pike suffers from the dreaded male pattern baldness, and came across an alien cat who agreed to serve as a toupee.

Unfortunately, there’s only one cat to go around, so young Kirk (also balding) will have to settle for one of those pink pussy…cat hats that some present-day extremist Feminists like to wear. Which would be fitting revenge against his toxic masculinity, of course.

Pompadours are dope.
You guys are whack.

If I recall correctly, the lack of pompadour haircuts on the men, and severe haircuts on the women was the exact reason given as to why NBC executives passed on “The Cage” as the first Star Trek pilot.

Finally, Secret Hideout has cracked the code regarding how to make the Pike Era work, as a series…

That's more compelling sci-fi than anything this group of writers have come up with.
Very kind. Thank you.

Truth be told, that was the plot for a parody movie that some friends of mine and I were going to film almost 20 years ago. We never filmed the entire episode, but this is what we did get in the can. That’s me playing Kirk, my daughter was the lieutenant in the Uhura dress.
