Star Trek: Picard

I did’nt want to bring this up as it is political and that is verboten here but I will say this.

Patrick has lost his mind

We don’t need nor want you to lecture us on what you think is wrong with the current affairs on this Planet

This series from what I have been told is a train wreck and some on the “Mount” already have buyers remorse

One good thing is Bad Robots grip on the franchise may be over

Amen. I don't care what your political views. I have many, I love politics, I research it and world events daily like other guys do sports.

Keep the partisan politics out of my entertainment Kathleen, Jar Jar Abrams, Star Trek fruitloops. Picard is the man as is Kirk. I will not let their behavior ruin my memories and love of the Franchise.

This is obviously another Picard Clone.

Luke just woke up from a bad dream of some crazy idea that the Emperor was still alive and some girl named something.

Sarah had another one of her bad dreams and Terminator ended with her T2 old lady cut scene.

Peace

Pity to overtly inject personal politics like that, but it was clear it was going to be a lost cause early on.
Politics of the day fades, when they do that they severely date things, it's not for the ages.

I'm seeing some buzz the next Trek movie may move back to proper Trek.
But they have to dump JJ Trek-like product in full for me to go near it.

So not holding my breath.

I REALLY hope this series is good.
Some positives from seeing that first trailer were:
  • Patrick Stewart was back, not another Bad Robot recast of a classic character.
  • Data was back, albeit likely as dreams/PTSD coping mechanism hallucinations.
  • Seven is back and they didn't remove her facial implants, although they look like grey jelly compared to her silver accented Voyager era implants.
  • It is in the post Nemesis prime timeline... I hope.
There are also many cons but I will wait until after the first episode to see if they can be corrected.
If not I'll vote with my feet and stop watching, sending a message to Kurtzman and co that they lost their chance at redeeming modern Star Trek.

I keep waiting for the contrarian, zealous defenders of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy and ST: Discovery to make their way over to this thread, like a barbarian horde, and begin trying to convince everyone why they are wrong to believe that Star Trek: TNG was a quality written show, that the Federation was noble in intent, that mankind had evolved, and that the show was about discovering facets of the human condition by exploring other life and other civilizations.

I highly doubt that Star Trek: TNG would be considered a timeless classic if the entire series had been set around Reagan / Thatcher politics or the US conflict with the Soviet Union. The show would be an extremely dated relic of the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Imagine the limited scope, and lack of contemporary importance, if the entire Star Trek series had been set as a direct repudiation of the policies of the Johnson administration?

If what Patrick Stewart is implying is true for Picard, then this sounds like the short-sighted path they may have chosen for this series.

As much as I hate politics in the shows I watch, for many of the same reasons listed above, it has been going on for years. Actors and other celebrities have used their fame to push agendas they believe in. TOS was very much a show of the the 1960's and couched things in sci-fi but in reality a lot of it had to do with the cold war and civil rights.

We also need to be careful with this thread as we are getting very close to talking about politics and that could get the thread locked and get a few of us banned.

Political commentary can be good, even if I disagree with it, it usually doesn't bother me too much.

More disturbed by the fact that according to announcements, it's kept the Kelvin timeline stuff. Unless the plot revolves around Picard and Q trying to find a way to combat the galaxy killing plot holes that are threatening the quadrant, it's going to have a hard time overcoming the inherent problems that timelines creates.

Not to mention that the Kelvin timeline is little more than a galactic black hole that keeps sucking away everything good that Star Trek used to be and disintegrating it atom by atom.

Disappointing it’s HIS personal politics on specific issues that are dictating direction of an entire series narrative?
Sure have an episode, have some balance too gasp! But this is not right. What if a writer would like a message that presents differing views? Anyways , I want Trek to be Trek again, Boldly exploring space, risk to advance the human condition, those possibilities Q spoke of. Too much to ask these days! Sob.

You can get banned here for talking politics? Not very proptastic!

As a Democrat I believe all should have props,..as long as all gun props have a waiting period and background check :D (y):D:lol::p

As a Republican I feel anyone should be able to have a prop gun as long as it can hold as many lazer bolts as you want.:D(y):lol:

Now come on. I just made that up and that's funny stuff.

They dumbed down the writing and treat the audience like idiots.
Two things standout for me about JJ/Bad Robot Trek that really sum up the joke that Star Trek has become.
The most advanced computer/AI on the Enterprise in the 2009 film not recognising Chekov's Russian accent, when it can translate complex alien languages, DUMB beyond dumb. That was just played for "laughs".
The second equally dumb thing which made me totally tune out of any possibility that the current regime was in it for the science or took the Trek universe seriously was Pine-Kirk swing kicking a warp core, or whatever they made the component out to be, back into alignment.
Speak to the team at CERN ask them if that's how you align sophisticated technology.

JJ/Kurtzman literally swing kicked out ALL credibility of their ability to handle Star Trek.

Everything is played for its attempt to be "cool" or funny.

The swearing, not a problem in context. Miles said "bollocks" in the episode "Time's Orphan" because he was under extreme pressure to get his daughter back.

Disco apparently had swearing but I couldn't say if it was in context as I stopped watching after the two leads walked the delta shield logo into sand during a storm to visually signal an orbitting ship to pick them up, in the opening episode.
A 5 year old could tell you wind blows the surface sand in desert away in minutes and erases any footsteps.

Current Star Trek insults the intelligence of its audience and I have better things to do with my time... like making props!;)
VOYAGER had swearing... but they disguised it in other languages.
Leonardo DaVinci dropped the italian equivalent of an F-bomb. ;)

You hear Germans in movies screaming "****" all the time, but they figure Americans won't know (we do. we do...) and apparently the FCC is either stupid or also thinks we don't know.

Just in general why a Picard focused series to begin with?
TNG went out with a whimper twice in a row in theaters after all.
All this doomy doomy doom starfleet stuff now is supposed to help?

What would have worked for me is the space archeologist he clearly had
massive passion for. Was there any doubt that would be what he would do?

Free of starfleet with some young adventurer team he could
have been the wise "professor" guiding several space Indiana Jones/Lara Crofts.
Exploration, adventure, seeking knowledge.

Ahhh well, flark it.

Nothing before 2005 is in the "prime universe". That BS terminology was invented for the 2009 reboot.

Remember who is in charge of Star Trek now, your idea is far too cerebral. How would they get all of their explosions in if Picard was actually doing some exploring?
