I did’nt want to bring this up as it is political and that is verboten here but I will say this.
Patrick has lost his mind
We don’t need nor want you to lecture us on what you think is wrong with the current affairs on this Planet
This series from what I have been told is a train wreck and some on the “Mount” already have buyers remorse
One good thing is Bad Robots grip on the franchise may be over
Unless the plot revolves around Picard and Q trying to find a way to combat the galaxy killing plot holes that are threatening the quadrant, it's going to have a hard time overcoming the inherent problems that timelines creates.
As much as I hate politics in the shows I watch, for many of the same reasons listed above, it has been going on for years. Actors and other celebrities have used their fame to push agendas they believe in. TOS was very much a show of the the 1960's and couched things in sci-fi but in reality a lot of it had to do with the cold war and civil rights.
We also need to be careful with this thread as we are getting very close to talking about politics and that could get the thread locked and get a few of us banned.
VOYAGER had swearing... but they disguised it in other languages. They dumbed down the writing and treat the audience like idiots.
Two things standout for me about JJ/Bad Robot Trek that really sum up the joke that Star Trek has become.
The most advanced computer/AI on the Enterprise in the 2009 film not recognising Chekov's Russian accent, when it can translate complex alien languages, DUMB beyond dumb. That was just played for "laughs".
The second equally dumb thing which made me totally tune out of any possibility that the current regime was in it for the science or took the Trek universe seriously was Pine-Kirk swing kicking a warp core, or whatever they made the component out to be, back into alignment.
Speak to the team at CERN ask them if that's how you align sophisticated technology.
JJ/Kurtzman literally swing kicked out ALL credibility of their ability to handle Star Trek.
Everything is played for its attempt to be "cool" or funny.
The swearing, not a problem in context. Miles said "bollocks" in the episode "Time's Orphan" because he was under extreme pressure to get his daughter back.
Disco apparently had swearing but I couldn't say if it was in context as I stopped watching after the two leads walked the delta shield logo into sand during a storm to visually signal an orbitting ship to pick them up, in the opening episode.
A 5 year old could tell you wind blows the surface sand in desert away in minutes and erases any footsteps.
Current Star Trek insults the intelligence of its audience and I have better things to do with my time... like making props!![]()
You hear Germans in movies screaming "****" all the time, but they figure Americans won't know (we do. we do...) and apparently the FCC is either stupid or also thinks we don't know.
I REALLY hope this series is good.
Some positives from seeing that first trailer were:
There are also many cons but I will wait until after the first episode to see if they can be corrected.
- Patrick Stewart was back, not another Bad Robot recast of a classic character.
- Data was back, albeit likely as dreams/PTSD coping mechanism hallucinations.
- Seven is back and they didn't remove her facial implants, although they look like grey jelly compared to her silver accented Voyager era implants.
- It is in the post Nemesis prime timeline... I hope.
If not I'll vote with my feet and stop watching, sending a message to Kurtzman and co that they lost their chance at redeeming modern Star Trek.
Just in general why a Picard focused series to begin with?
TNG went out with a whimper twice in a row in theaters after all.
All this doomy doomy doom starfleet stuff now is supposed to help?
What would have worked for me is the space archeologist he clearly had
massive passion for. Was there any doubt that would be what he would do?
Free of starfleet with some young adventurer team he could
have been the wise "professor" guiding several space Indiana Jones/Lara Crofts.
Exploration, adventure, seeking knowledge.
Ahhh well, flark it.
Well they had to call it something to distinguish it from the rest of Trek.Nothing before 2005 is in the "prime universe". That BS terminology was invented for the 2009 reboot.
Simple. TOS through VOY = Trek Canon. ENT onward = AU Trek.Well they had to call it something to distinguish it from the rest of Trek.
