Star Trek Into Darkness (Post-release)

Well, I saw it today. Finally.
Once again, IMO, just like the first, everytime I start thinking about it...I get confused as to what the plot actually was. For me, like the 2009 Trek, the movie plays out in my mind a just a series of really cool scenes and moments just strung together in a fast pace sequence. Unfortunately, contrary to pretty much everyone else's rave reviews, I was not impressed at all. I enjoyed the fine acting of Benedict Cumberbatch and Karl Urban and found myself just waiting for their scenes. Simon Pegg was good as Scotty, again.
The CG was great! First rate. The lens flare and shaky camera movements drove me crazy, especially considering there was a time where such things would have been considered sloppy camera work, now they are considered 'techniques'.
I'll probably go and see it again anyway, despite everything I've just said. It's my love for Star Trek which will keep me coming back.

Sorry, I completely disagree. The movie was fantastic! It was 2 hours and 12 minutes of riveting Star Trek. Sorry you didn't enjoy it. TWOK "reused old characters" and it's a fan favorite--in fact I believe it's voted the best Trek movie prior to JJ's alternate U. And I concur.

No, Wrath of Khan took things to the logical conclusion of a setup that occurred in the TV series. It didn't 'reuse' old characters, it showed us a development over time and the fallout of Kirk's decisions long term. JJ just reused them with nothing whatsoever tieing them to the original characters, except essentially their name. He could have created entirely brand new characters with the same result and plot, there was simply no point to using and diminishing Khan.

And Quinto looked like and idiot with his yell at the end. I'm sure Hayden Christensen was hoping that it'd look worse than his at the end of Revenge of the Sith, but it didn't quite reach that levels.

Again, TWOK did not "create entirely brand new characters." Just as this movie exists in an alternate reality in which we are given a totally new story scenario with Khan.

"JJ just reused them with nothing whatsoever tieing them to the original characters."

Sorry, I don't understand this allegation, at all. It is the same character, historically, acting in a different "universe." And being a fan of Khan, I loved it. So, I don't see how TWOK is not "guilty" of "reusing" old characters" but this movie is. (Let's give the Devil his due.) Each is a different story in a different "universe," affected by different events, and I enjoyed both equally.

Odd that Marcus would employ Khan as a military consultant when in WOK he is shown to be a limited strategist with his 2 dimensional flight pattern of the Reliant.

Why did they refreeze Khan at the end, instead of making him stand trial?

My guess is that a trial would likely reveal some or all of the following:

The existence of Section 31
The existence of the Vengeance
That there's at least one, and probably 73 people on Earth whose blood is a universal panacea

Of course, had they put him on trial, I suppose that the punishment probably would have been exile for him and his people. To Ceti Alpha V.

I was able to finally see it last night and despite (or maybe because) of going and expecting a "meh" movie at best I came away having really enjoyed it. It moved along quite nicely and the performances were top notch, like others have said, the actors really seem to be more comfortable in their roles this time around and the chemistry was much better too. I liked all of the nods to TOS throughout the movie from the mention of Carol Marcus to the sound effects on the bridge and the communicators. I also thought that I detected hints of James Horner in the opening score as well as the (in)famous fight music from Amok Time when Spock was fighting Kahn on the flying car things. I also liked the new uniforms, the Admiral's service dress/full dress uniforms I thought were sort of reminiscent of Kirk's uniform from TMP, and the crew uniforms (esp. with the caps on) reminded me of the security uniforms from ST III.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the movie I still don't care much for the set designs, Abrams' starship interiors still don't make much sense to me. Why all of the catwalks even if they do have handrails on the Enterprise, it's a ship of war/exploration not a cruise ship so there's no need for that nice rotunda with the openings allowing you to see down to other decks. Then there's engineering with its brewery parts still there and the warp core room, while nice looking, seemed much too large for the Enterprise, hell, everything about the inside of the Enterprise screams TARDIS to me.

Although I am totally digging your post, Proper, as a fellow fan of the film....the ship design stuff is FUBAR. :)

Honestly, it just don't bother me. I'm not compelled to analyze it so much--especially the interior. I figure everything has a design/engineering purpose, and not for me to argue with designers/engineers who got paid to do their job. And the exterior, well, I like that lots. :popcorn

Don't get me wrong: The TOS Enterprise is my darling and always will be.

It bugs me because I am a model builder and like my ships to be in scale. Building up old AMT Enterprises was how I spent y youth!

I saw it, it was enjoyable, but I didn't like the lack of originality and the role reversal stuff. I also just happened to see the DS9 episode where they first talk of Section 31. I thought it was also a bit strange to have Peter Weller play a role as he did after playing a similar role in Enterprise.

But more than anything...the one thing that drives me crazy...

I see these things all the time in convenient stores...and it drives me nuts to see them on screen. lol

Did anyone happen to notice the subtle 'refit' at the end of the movie?

Before:

Refit seen at the end just before the 5 year mission credits:

I dont know if it was already mentioned, but did anyone else notice the NX-01 in the movie?

Yeah, I posted that earlier. Don't like e mega impulse drive but it does seem they may have reduced the size of the bridge to scale the ship better.

Yes, a few pages back I think.

Just saw it. Very entertaining. I loved it right up until the ridiculous role reversal in the warp core. Pegg's line delivery "better get down here...better hurry" was awful. No feeling or emotion to it at all compared to Doohan's delivery of the EXACT same line. Quinto's "Khaaaaaaaan!" was cringe-worthy as were all the lines being swapped over between Kirk and Spock. This strange choice to try and re-do one of the most emotional scenes from the entire Trek movie franchise was a poor decision in my opinion. Also, the fact that Kirk and Spock had many more years of friendship under their belt in TWOK made the feeling of loss much more profound in that movie. All of these moments took me right out of the movie. It's a shame because I really enjoyed it up until that point.

Okay I'll interject here.

The original sequence of Spock saving the Enterprise in WOK can still move me to tears if my mood is right.

I had spoiled the ending of the film for myself, so I knew the warp core scene was coming. Despite this, I found myself welling up during Kirk's sacrifice and the following exchange between him and Spock. I was actually fighting back trying not to openly cry at this.

The shot of Scotty in tears sent me over the edge, I couldn't help myself.

I know this was essentially a shot for shot rehash of the original scene (with a role reversal). However it still worked for me! I can't put my finger on it as to why it still worked and didn't have me rolling my eyes.

You have to appreciate that WOK is not only my favourite Trek film, but my favourite film in general of all time. So for this new take to move me to tears really solidified that I "care" about these characters. They have come into their own for me.

That being said... ;) Spock's "KHAAAAAAN" nearly took me out of the moment. Really would have rather he yelled "NOOOOOO" or something. At least JJ had the insight to throw the viewer back into the fray with the Vengeance nearly hitting the Enterprise in the next shot; distracted me enough to get over the so-so delivery of that infamous line quickly. :lol
