I kinda get why Trekkies don't like the show. It's my favorite show in the ST Franchise. I didn't like DS9, Voy had the chance to be different and did not take it. TNG had some great episodes but overall most episodes weren't good. Some of them were carried by Stewart alone.

ST never aged well, most of the movies aside. I think a complete reboot would have been better. The ST canon consists of decisions from low budget times or bad writing, like the very uncreative Aliens (Greeks, Romans and Mongolians in space).

I always tried to like ST and there are movies and episodes that are really great in every aspect but there's lot of stuff that I cannot like even if I want to.

STD is different, not perfect, sometimes not even good, but overall I enjoyed the first Season.

I bought this on bluray this past weekend (season 1) and am now on my 3rd viewing. I love it! I consider myself to be a passive trekkie and have thoroughly enjoyed all star trek over the years, but the TOS is barely watchable for me now as it's so dated. I love the TNG era TV shows and I went into it understanding that this is in Abram's verse and was a quasi reboot and really enjoyed it. I will agree with others here in that at times I felt like I wasn't watching trek but some random sci-fi show, but as a whole it still felt like Star Trek to me. I love the design of the Shenzhou and Discovery and hear that Round2 will be producing kits of these and look forward to building them. My favorite klingon is L'rell as she is so passionate and strong. I love all her scenes with Voq. My favorite starfleet character is Saru. I love all his scenes as acting captain and think he would make an excellent captain. I can't wait to see season 2.

Saw the first episode of Season 2. Anson Mount's Pike is probably the best thing about it. Although even he had to give in to the Mary Sue "awesomeness" that is Michael Burnham.

I still think the Disco Enterprise is gorgeous, and Detmer fangirling over the Enterprise was hilarious.

Pike was fantastic.

Still not liking Burnham Sue, but the show would improve if they turned it into an ensemble show.

Haven't been a fan but have been watching anyway. It has been improving. Didn't despise the opener. Although I think Spock is too young, if he was younger than Michael when she was adopted (unless Vulcans look like 6-year olds for many more of our Earth years). Also, Spock being a butt, even during his little brat years? No sir, I don't like it.

There was a backwards Delta on the Hathaway. Don't know what to make of that.

It isn't Michael I dislike the most. It's Tilly. Man I hate her.

Oh, and I like Tig Notaro's character. I've liked that actress ever since The Sarah Silverman Program. She has an effortless style that doesn't look like acting.

It might be a red herring, but there seemed to be hints that Pike wasn't really Pike, with him not remembering/recognizing certain references.

Is it just me or was the Transformers transforming sound fx used when the gravity simulator unfolded in the landing bay?

Didn’t hate the season 2 premiere. I don’t like tech unfolding from nowhere (helmets, gravity generator thing). I don’t understand why Pike had to eject from his pod. If he could survive being ejected, he could survive his bubble cracking. And I guess flying through a debris field is a required thing for all new Trek. And they added yet another wise-cracking Starfleet officer. What was with the bright red corridor in the Enterprise?..

I’m going to watch it again to see if I can figure a few things out.

EDIT:
Ok, I noticed Pike’s Helmet closes one second before ejecting. Also, they said his pod was dead and he was in free-fall, but it was obviously still maneuvering.

I think it’s a shame that this show has so much wasted potential.

By far, it’s the best looking of all the Trek shows (other than the tracksuit uniforms) but the series regular characters—all of them—are just unlikeable. The lead, Michael, is consistently insubordinate (because she knows better than anyone else) and engages in so much robotic posturing and long-winded lecturing that it is just tiresome. Not EVERY episode should call for a “risk is our business” type of lecture. And now it seems she is going to be presented as “the one that taught Spock about empathy”? Please...

The “we are Starfleet...we are the United Federation Of Planets!” speech from last season was just embarrassing. It reminded me of the early TNG season one episode in which Wesley Crusher lowered his voice an octave and said to an alien race “we are Starfleet—we don’t lie”.

There was a certain tonal “shift” that occurred during the season 2 premier episode in which they suddenly tried to inject some sort of humor and comraderie into the episode (I think this occurred during the interaction with Michael and Tilly in sickbay after Michael beamed back aboard from the asteroid). This came across as both sudden and jarring. Were these scenes with the tonal shift part of the reshoots? I wonder.

The statement by Pike that “...wherever we go...we’re going to have fun” was so un-captain-like (try to imagine Picard saying this to Riker or Data) and seemed to be a very desperate call-out to the “Orville preferencing” audience that things are going to be “more ‘funner’” this year.

I still will watch the show for the production design, visual effects, etc.—which are undeniably great—but the characters and stories just don’t have me as a fan.

I decided to give this show a try after seeing some of the trailers with Anson Mount. VERY hesitantly. I watched the first episode for free, then I binged the first season, and then watched the first episode of the new season over this weekend. Man, the writing is so sloppy. The first season felt like they were not sure if they wanted to write a science fiction show or a soap opera about Klingons. And I'm just saying if half the show is going to be in another language, maybe create something that doesn't sound like the same 5 gutteral grunting noises repeated over and over again with an occasional "shaaaaa" thrown in.

The narrative in season 1 was tough for me to enjoy. First, the ENTIRE plot revolving around the spore drive and the giant tardigrade was painfully, paintfully terrible. If they wanted to steal ideas, why not steal something more compelling than a giant bug with feelings who gets poked by robot hands to make the ship do imposible things.

Second, making the lead character a self righteous jerk is a Ster Trek mainstay. I get it. But the mutiny she tried to pull off was stupid. The character is not dumb. She's self righteous, she's selfish, and she's a jerky knowitall. Sure. But she isn't stupid. And she isn't a Mary Sue. She was trained and educated. She's a capable character. She certainly COULD pull off a mutiny. But in no way would she simply stun the captain with a Vulcan nerve pinch, and then try to pretend like she's in charge.

That said, there were moments, and characters that I thought worked pretty well. The show has plenty to like about it. The lead actress is doing her very best to elevate the writing, and some times she even pulls it off. She can handle the action scenes well, and the stunt work was done pretty well.

Bringing in Anson Mount to play Pike is certainly a welcome addition. I like the actor, like the character, and I think the show just works better with him in place. Not because it feels more like old trek, I don't really care about that. He brings a certain presence and stalwart strength that no one presented in season 1. So I hope they keep him on the show for however long it runs.

I think the key point is, that they brought in what people are attracted to. Leaders are leaders for a reason, and good ones more so. They took an existing unused character, created a character that people would be interested in, and selected an actor who fit that roll and was able to deliver.

Unfortunately, they seemed unable to do that for most other's on this show to date. Saru works at times.

Anyone else? I'm not so certain at this time.

I know a few things that I'm fed up with, is: stupid bickering between characters, and stupid pointless drawn out "humour". Oh, and by god, long winded pontificating.
