ST Tech Manual Phaser Build-Up *NEW PICS - POST 59*

Re: ST Tech Manual Phaser Build-Up

Here's another update, though I hope to have more later tonight. We shall see. I'm working on a couple projects at once.

Fist off, I got the P2 base color painted. I'm not sure if it's going to get any weathering or color accents. I need to ask my client. I airbrushed on a custom mix of Model Masters color. It's 3 parts RAF PRU Blue, 1 part Gunship Grey and 2 parts Laquer Thinner.

Also, I was unhappy with the finish I got on the P1. Though it wasn't nearly as grainy as in the photos, there was still a very slight texture to it that just looked like crap under certain light angles. I'm pretty sure it was because I used thinner instead of alcohol to thin the Tamiya paint. Live and learn. I wet sanded the heck out of it again, and got a nice smooth surface, then I applied a semi-gloss black ceramic spray paint for engines that I got at the auto store. My god, this stuff is amazing. I went ahead and resprayed all the semi-gloss black pieces of projects I had sitting in my workshop.

I also got on the gloss black undercoat for the pieces that will be Alcladed:

And here are a couple dry fit teaser pics:

Re: ST Tech Manual Phaser Build-Up

Coming along nicely.
That sure looks a heck of a lot better than that
rust colored primer! LOL :lol

So when you use Alclad Chrome, do you have to use
a gloss black base coat?

Re: ST Tech Manual Phaser Build-Up

Franz Joseph seems to have drawn his phaser side view from this photo in the book "The Making of Star Trek"... which unfortunately was shot in very bright light and the dark shadow was included when whoever it was, cut out the phaser's outline for the book.

THis is somebody else's annotated version of the photo BTW but it shows the parts that shouldn't be in there.

"The phaser that ripped off the Smithsonian." :lol

All accuracy issues aside, it is a good build.

It's highly recommended, yes. Alclad is semi-transparent, so having a dark base coat gives it a deeper luster. And of course, if it's not gloss, you'll have a textured finish which is not good.

Very nice work. I've been wanting to try out the ceramic engine paint. What's the finish like?

Very strong. So far it's resisted some majorly rough handling (when I could no longer fit the P1 into the P2 because of paint layers) that would have scratched or chipped any other paint. The finish has very very slight ripple to it like a baked powder coat finish has. And it dries amazingly fast.

Last update of the evening:

Nothing much to show, as I'm still waiting for paint to cure, but I have a couple new pics.

I glued and clamped the P1 body together. When the glue set, I dry fitted it into the P2 body. Due to the thick (but awesome) ceramic paint, I really had to jam it in there, but it works. It's such a tight, strong fit that I wont need to worry about drilling and pinning this to the P2 when it comes time to glue those together. I just have a small seam to take care of and add some touch up paint, and this will be ready to receive it's doodads. You can also see in the pics that I added the brass locking pin to the side of the P2.

I've also masked off the front of the P2 and sprayed on some gloss black. There is a small rectangular window that will remain black, and the rest will be hit with the Alclad. I don't know why this area is silver, but that's what the blueprints say.

That's all for tonight. If I don't collapse after a Monday of delivering mail tomorrow, I should have some more photos by late evening.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone. It really helps spur me on.

Re: ST Tech Manual Phaser Build-Up

Update will probably be delayed tonight. The client and I have decided to change the color of the phaser, so I've got some repainting to do. Instead of the color scheme looking more like a screen used phaser, we're going to go with the tech manual scheme, which is all black with a blue/grey panel on the top rear, as shown in the last two pics Replicator1701 posted.

Re: ST Tech Manual Phaser Build-Up

I've applied the Alclad to the small pieces (and they look goooood), smoothed out and repainted the now filled in seam on the rear of the P1, and begun the changing of the color on the P2.

I have no photos, as the cam's batteries are charging. However, not to leave you high and dry, here's a shot of something else I'm working on for the same client:
