id be willing to give it a go ;)

Re: ANH Space Trooper Backpack

I found this thread rather interesting and even more so that there is so little reference available for this Trooper.

I wrote the Star Wars Insider to ask them if they would consider digging up some material on the SpaceTrooper and possibly do an article on them since there is some interest and because so little has ever been discussed about it. Hopefully they'll take it into consideration and we'll see something in the coming months, especially since this is the 30th anniversary. :thumbsup

If any of you personally know someone who works for the Insider or knows someone who knows someone, maybe you can pass the word along.

Re: ANH Space Trooper Backpack

Tried to clean it up a bit.

The new making of book says for sure they only had one costume at the time, so Joe Johnston doubled up....I thought maybe they were wrong till I looked at this picture again (which I am pretty sure is legit), there seems to be a black "tear" between the two, and if you look above the second troopers head, there is a faint line a couple inches up which may be an indication that this is a test composite, or two maybe two photos laid on top of one another, or something like that....

I think I have it.

I know you're gonna get pissed, because I don't have my scanner hooked up, so I'm counting on one of you guys to scan this for me.

In the new "The Making of Star Wars" book (J.W. Rinzler)

Turn to page 231.

There are 6 pictures in 2 columns of photos, one of them is Joe Johnston with the Spacetrooper Backpack on.

Look at the photo in the upper left of the Death Star gun with the "ILM 243" card on it.

Look at the object to the right of the cannon.

I guess they used what was available for the backback perhaps?

Please scan and post for comments.

my scanner isn't the best but..
Are you taking about the tubes? If so they look like the AMT Fruehauf Tanker Trailer detailed with some parts fromthe sealab.

Re: Spacetrooper Backpack- Found !!

The detail on top of those tubes looks like the same detail in the Joe Johnston pic.

Although it may not be what we see on screen.

Re: Spacetrooper Backpack- Found !!

I'm surprised, even without a great scan, that someone with the book doesn't have an opinion one way or the other on this. I'll admit the object in the upper left pic doesn't look like what we see in the screen caps as far as the white color, but it does (to me) look exactly like what we see on Joe Johnstons back in the 2 shots we have of him. (from over his shoulder)

Also, I can't remember seeing that item in any other Death Star shot or scene, I'm not sure what it is.

Maybe it was painted white? Maybe it looks white due to filming with bright lights/ color saturation?

Maybe GL asked for backpacks and the ILM team made one up from kit parts in the shop?

Anything?

Re: Spacetrooper Backpack- Found !!

You guys are killing me. Over 500 views and nothing. I was expecting a huge wave of "Oh no, that looks nothing like it at all" or maybe a few "Hey, I think you are right !" post. But nothing.

Everyone seemed so hot for this a while back, what happened?

I did the best I could with my camera, I'll try my scanner later.

Item in question:

Anything?

Re: Spacetrooper Backpack- Found !!

I was gonna go the uh-uh that ain't it route, but your closeups above are more convincing.

Someone said "AMT Fruehauf Tanker Trailer" would those be big enough??

They kinda remind me of big squeezy bottles you'd get washing up liquid or poster paint in...

SAS

It's not it!! It..... can't.....be!!! You....... are.... WRONG!!!

:p

Good eyes on finding that! I'm no expert, but that looks like you may be right.

Based on where the 'tubes' on the top are, I think in the trench pic we are seeing the outside of the tanks (the side that faces out when worn).

The detailing looks out of scale to go with a stormtrooper and the color looks to be the same as the death star which would make this the wrong color.

I'm not convinced :unsure .

Well, thats my point.

What we see in the 2 good Joe Johnston pics may not be what we see on screen as the finished trooper pack.

I believe, based on the two good Joe Johnston pics we have, that the backpack he is wearing in those pictures is not white but light grey.

But, like I said, that might not be what we see on screen.

Looking over Joe's shoulder, I see a round tank with a certain roundover and angle between the sides and the endcap, which I believe matches up with the object sitting in that trench photo. I also see detail on the top of the endcap that seems to match up with the detail on the object in the trench photo.

I believe those 2 items are one in the same.

They might have shot the cannons and troopers as seperate elements and them combined them together, or they might have placed the cannons close to the camera, the troopers far away, and created a forced-perspective and shot all the elements in the same frame to save one more pass through the optical printer.

I also see an object that was built, painted, and as far as I know was never seen on screen in ANH. What is it? If not a Spacetrooper backpack?

What we are missing is the bottom tank that the hose attaches to. It could be sitting down inside the trench and out of frame in that picture.

And after viewing the dailies, they might have gone back and painted it gloss white and re-shot the troopers.

Maybe Chris from POSW could chime in?

Actually they're seen 3 times.

Durring the initial contact with the deathstar:

Just after Vader tells the officer to get the pilots to their fighters:

I say good try but I'm not convinced.

It does look like those cannisters could be the backpack.
My problem with this is they are clearly Death Star parts, painted Death Star grey and used several times as such. They are also clearly detailed to scale with that gun turret. IMO they don't look like they are 1:1 scale and I don't think the model makers would use them as such unless REALLY pressed for time.

The side by side comparison does seem to support it, but not much of the backpack is seen and it's out of focus.
I wouldn't completely write it off the idea yet.

Excellent eye !

I never notice those before, I guess I was always looking at either the gun or the x-wing. I love this board !

Like I said, what we see in the Joe Johnston pic may not be what we see in the final shot. But it sure looks close............
