My question is, does anyone know if this scene was taken in the US or across the pond?
[/b]

It was shot at ILM. The track on the left is the moton control track they had on the stage. In early '77, ILM helped out with shooting a bunch of pickups and inserts. The props and costumes that they needed were shipped over from England (most of which just wound up in storage at ILM after the movie came out).

They shot the cantina aliens, the severed arm (and a head) from the dude ObiWan slashes in the cantina, the Deathstar laser tunnel operators (a couple of ILM guys), the spacetroopers seen here (more ILM'ers), the long distance shots of the landspeeder (which they shot at the same time/place as they shot the Jawa Sandcrawler), and the location stuff in Guatemala.

The cantina stuff wasn't shot at ILM, it was shot at another insert stage in Hollywood (I think). The elements that was going to be part of a composite was just shot at ILM. By that time, George was spending time on the ILM stage anyways.

One of the ILM guys (and I don't know if it was Joe Johnston or not) made up his own Darth Vader helmet that they wore for a Halloween party or something like that, but I'm pretty sure they just used the props and costumes that came over from first unit (save for the cantina aliens).

Could it be one of these mounted upside-down? The hose looks pretty close....

Could be as the bottoms (tops when mounted backwards ;) ) are shallow...but they have a little cap on the top, those don't

I've been busy today and sanded these bottles down into a lovely clean surface.

I've mangaed to get hold of 2 gas cooker hoses with a rib effect and and an elbow joint for the backpack connection.
I'm going to use my Braun shaver cleaning fluid cartridge as a basis for forming over for the side facias of the backpack.

I'm not sure if I should make the bottles more shiney (how would I do that anyway? Wax and buffing maybe?) or just leave them as they are.
I'll make a backpack base and then, due to enhanced screen shots/blow ups etc, I'll make a raised T shaped holder for the 2 bottles. Grey webbing and bingo. Away we go :)
Not sure how to attach the webbing so it sits snug on our backs though

Guys, this Holy Grail of Props as been playing on my mind for a long time now.

Ive had a quick scan through the thread and no-one has come up with this theory....

Its a known fact that most of the weapons and perhaps other props were taken from WWll used items, so why would the Spacetroopers Backpack be an exception

I watched a war Movie today an old black and white one featuring Steve McQueen i think it was called "Hell for the heros" anyway some of the soldiers were wearing backpacks.

I decided to do a little investigation and found these Pictures.

HAVE WE FOUND THE HOLY GRAIL GUYS..................... YOUR OPINIONS PLEASE

AN M2 WWll Flamethrower

Thats the one, Thank you :thumbsup

Yeah Simon they could be dude. Don't see why not.

The only thing that makes maybe not is the side shot of that dude with his lid off. the bottles seem to be resting on something with a large 'L' shaped appliance.
This baby doesn't seem to have that. However in it's defence some enhancements I have support that middle bottle and whatever the bottles do sit on is completelt missing from that flamethrower anyway. At first I thought it was a bridge, but in some flicks with me, it did look like a biker type backpack, so I dunno.

Very interesting my friend. Does this baby have a model no or something?

I dont think the flame thrower pack is it due to size alone. Ive handled a real US Iwo Jima era flame thrower rig and they are pretty good size and heavy. Unless its some sort of mini tank version I have never seen, I dont think thats it.

Damn.......... will we ever find out what it is

I did also find this 3D type picture too, it would be great if someone could photoshop a Trooper in the picture instaed of this guy

try looking at non US flame throwers.
The Germans had them too but I would guess the packs would have come from a prop rental house since they are an actual weapon. Then, they were painted white? Just doesnt add up but I have been wrong many times before.

Has anyone searched for the packs anywhere else in the OT? Things were reused as much as possible. Remember IG88's head in the cantina?

The pic I posted is from an scuba tank used in WWII tanks incase they get stuck in the water, it's German or Czech or something ($99 online surplus).

OMG... I never thought of that... :eek

(runs to nearest convienent store with pipe wrench)

I do think you OTHER guys might be onto something with the flamethrower pack etc. who knows.

Coulda been maybe a more portable smaller tank unit?

I seem to recall seeing smaller scuba gear setups in the past as well...

Hey the if the Obi saber with its various parts from guns jets cameras and grenades can be figured out in my short time here... I really dont see why this cant be IDed.

esp since id say it was an existing item with a few added bits then spray painted white... but, at the same time, Ive always thought that maybe they just used the same frames as the TD packs but instead of tupperware... they just added a few tanks and a hose...

Sure wish kurty boy could get those photos.

Id at least like to be able to SEE what im lookin at. LOL.

I know that the troopers were what led me to SW at... well since my eyes adjusted to light, and I honestly used to hit pause on my VHS tapes in the 80's and try to see what these guys were, the kids at school made fun of me when I talked about how the "space trooers" (as I called them) were my favorite.

... after sharpening the image I came to the conclusion it look s like a urinal...

That was too funny. I spit wine out of my mouth.

I was told by someone who worked on ANH that camping Gaz were used often. SO too were toilet parets and Hoover washine bits and bobs.

Now then, if someone else can say where the camping Gaz were used it 'could' rule out the fact that they weren't used on this backpack.

Looking at the behind the scenes shot and the tops/dome of old camping Gaz cannisters I have to agree with what I've been told. (bottle wise)
As for the rest of it. who knows. I can't wait for this new book

I have tried contacting the guy with the photos again. That was weeks ago. No answer.

Anyone else, feel free to try.

Sounds like a lost cause. Remember the guy with the funky stormtrooper armor? Go back and re-read his page. Seems some inquiring minds managed to tick him off.
