Spacetrooper Backpack- Found !! New pics added

Simon? Is that you? LOL

diagbackpack.jpg

Yeah I think it tapers to the right purely due to the photos we have already. You're right in saying it maybe just parallel lines. I'm on about the thing that sticks out of the right hand side. I'm sure under the tanks it is parallel yes.

*****. if Mr Johnston is directing films, I doubt he'll have time for this kind of carry on. LOL

The more i look at the hose the more im not convinced it was a washing machine Hose but infact a Gas Cooker Hose.

These would have been a lot more ridgid than a washing machine hose and were also readily available in the UK at this time. The SpacePack hose looks very ridgid like that of a cooker hose

deathstartrooperhostmc1.jpg

The picture below shows the Hose available today and i know that they havent changed all that much in 30yrs........... also note the fitment on the end of the hose to that of the one on the Trooper Spacepack very similar IMHO the fittings came in a variety of angles, You wont find that fitting on any washing machine hose.

Yep. I am agreeing with you there.

Oh, I like the idea of naming this trooper variant simply: "The Johnston Trooper", as Clutch suggested, as an homage to Joe. I am placing a call later today to my contact who knows Joe. Joe lives here in SB, so hopefully he is in town and maybe I can fax or e-mail some of these pics to him sooner than later.

Great schemetics SL/TK8456.

think scuba or snorkel.
Has anyone looked at painter or welders scuba set ups from the '70's?

Nice on Simon. Think you maybe right.

I just bought 2 of these from ebay anyway. They have the L shaped elbow joint that seems to attached to the backpack

I keep thinking to myself that this was a spur of the moment addition to the film so the easy option would have been to use something readily available.

I could be wrong of course ;)

So you are saying you don't think the scenic crew or set building crew would have that?

If it were a spur of the moment decision to add this to movie (and im only guessing here) i would say that a cooker/washing machine Hose would have been more readily available than a scuba set up

What do you think?? :confused

To me it would have been a lot of effort to find something as sophisticated as a scuba setup for a couple of seconds screen time, i have visions of George saying "we need some kind of hose" and a guy running on set with a cooker/washing machine hose saying "will this do"

But hey, like i said im probably way off the mark

If I may add some 2 cents worth.... Does anyone think there was a possibility of a fork truck or other piece of heavy equipment that was raided for parts? That hose is definitely rigid enough to be a hydraulic line and the cannisters resemble hydraulic oil filters. :unsure Just another thought to muddy the waters.

these set ups are part of PPE just like hardhats , welding mask and steeltoe boots are.
thats one reason to use it..something a shop or crew would have. Other stuff to think about is they did get a lot of surplus store stuff also, could have come with the rest of the "junk" of military stuff. But I think they would use what they had and set crews do have a lot of strange hardware.
Only Joe knows and he might never tell or even remember.
Moreover, it might be worth looking into todays scuba like stuff, after all you want the intent of the object, most things on sets are not made for long period use and can only last as long as a shot.

The Plot Thickens :) has anyone contacted Joe about this? i dont mind doing it if someone can pass on some details of how to contact him that is.

I dunno what they used only waht I was told by AA of SDS that Hoover wachine machine parts and toilet parts etc were common place on the props. The inclusion of Hoover is important there as washing machine is just to generic.

How he knows that I dunno and also I don't want to get into the AA had nowt to do with debates that's constantly around. I asked him and sent him that picture, he said camping Gaz cannisters and either toilet or hoover washing machine parts.
If he was involved in the design of props like back packs etc is very debatable but was involved in the film so may know more than us at present.

However he did agreee with me that that pipe looks a little bit too industrial to be a washing machine hose.
So the idea of hydraulic pipe is a good one. They did raid several old factory type work shop machines to get the Hengstler counters etc (electronic clocks used on the E11s) so maybe they stole whatever hose was on there too?

One thing we can say is it has silver fittings and is rubber in texture, not plastic coated, Otherwise the light would bounce of the tube as it does in the back stage shots on the armour and hose fittings.

So some sort of black rubber hydraulic pipe is a good one. :)

I am going to run the image of the hose by a plumber I know who has been a plumber for over 20 years, to get his thoughts on the "Hoover" hose idea. With the metal piece at the end that should be enough of a clue to someone who maybe in the know. Though, I am totally down with the idea that it's could be a hose from gas camping cooker. I am still trying to get a hold of my friend who is pals with Joe.

Don't forget that the Boba Fett jetpack frame was for a scuba tank and had a "US Divers" buckle.....scuba gear was "readily available" ;)

Just thought I'd mention it, not that I'm replicating this Trooper or anything, just trying to help. :)

Yeah, but that was after ANH (when the funding really wasn't there. And time wasn't on their side either).

Are you sure of that? Fett was built all white and If I recall was made as a Stormtrooper like commando but was latter changed to the Bounty Hunter character. He even shot flames at one time.

I've never heard that before (doesn't mean its not accurate) Can anyone confirm this?

I remember doing this a couple of years ago...

wcavatar.jpg

I got the "Hey. It's the White Power Ranger. Cool." quite a bit.

Now I do this...

mine.jpg

And people come to my office and see it on my mannequin and say "Cool, It's a Storm Trooper."

Some people just don't care about the fine subtle differences that make these suits special. :lol
