Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club (PIC HEAVY!)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Fun it is, Steve!
Ever since this show was first on in the mid 70's, I'd always loved this ship. Something about it-while futuristic fantasy, ssomehow had a look of having one foot planted firmly in the soil of credibility. It grabbed me immediately, and I didn't realize until recently just how many of my contemporaries felt the same way at the time! Decades later, I'm procrastinating no longer: the "little red-haired girl" of my youth can at last be mine!:)

Seeing the jaw-droppingly gorgeous job you did on my real first love, Steve (i.e. 1701), actually helped inspire me to at least attempt this build! No mean feat, that: I haven't built anything in almost ten years!!

Now, in the Ways-I-Never-Thought-I'd-Be-Spending-A-Saturday-Night Dept:

Giving my pods a styrene coating!

I have to say, I'm delighted at how sturdy these constructs are! Very light weight and completely inflexible...they should serve well in supporting the legs which in turn will support the ship.
Next up will be constructing the metal support. I want to make sure it's going to work out before I construct the next two pods, just in case I have to modify them in some way.

I love her too. would love to build one one day. She's a beaut!

Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad I had an influence on you!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Well, I'll just say that I'm glad I beat you to it, Steve. Attempting to build an Eagle after seeing you do it would be a bit like me playing guitar for an audience for the first time, then suddenly noticing Carlos Santana sitting in the front row!:eek

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Your too kind. What you are doing is first rate!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Bob when you and Darren finish these, I'd love to see you each do an idealized version at any scale. You know where you make it the way you feel it would be the best. And then compare the idealized versions with the show versions. I think you two could improve upon the original significantly.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Interesting you say that, greylocke. When I improvised on some of the pod detail, Darren asked what plans I was using, not knowing I was 'winging it' here and there. I didn't know myself until I did it! I felt for a bit that I shouldn't do that, that I should just stick to the plan. But then I realized that the different Eagle models on the show had some subtle differences, so who's to say mine couldn't too? Something about the ship lends itself to some amount of customizing in a way that, say, the Enterprise doesn't. Maybe it's because "the" Eagle is actually "a" Eagle, being a fleet and all.
Say that ten identical cars roll off the assembly line. Now, go look at those ten cars in a year or two. Most likely identical no more: one owner added a sun roof, another pinstriping, etc. One has bumper stickers galore, another a child seat, another full of cigarette butts and empty take-out coffee cups. You get what I mean, each car has been "customized" by time and usage. These aren't the best examples, but I'm just saying that with such considerations in mind, it's conceivable that someone who's familiar with the fleet could recoignize them on sight, the same way you can recognize "Charlie" when he drives by, even though there are thousands of cars like his out there.
This is kind of where your question comes into play. I do have a few issues with the Eagle design, and it would be interesting to play around with that. What good would the toilet be in the rear walkway, if you were out on a mission with a winch pod blocking the way? Or no pod at all?:eek Where do those metal steps and hand rail come from when they land somewhere and get out? I won't even bring up the command module spatial issues!
I'll see what happens. When I'm done (which seems like a long way off at this stage), maybe I'll tacke that. Although any changes I'd have in mind mighrt not affect the ship visually too much. Most of the changes I'd make would most likely be with the miniature/live action set discrepancies. I wasn't even planning on building an Eagle in the first place, so I'm not sure how enthusiastic I'd be right on the heels of this. Who knows? I'll keep that in mind!

By the way, how did your styrene search go? I've been waiting for that the same way we waited for the season opener after Picard got kidnapped by the borg!:lol

I totally agree with you there Bob! As you know too well, I have made a ton of small changes myself, and I will probably continue to do so, as it makes it work for me, as yours works for you :)
Keep up the good work old Chap!

:lol :lol :lol

I should be back on the case tomorrow or Tuesday at the latest. How's yours coming along?

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Coming along pretty good, Darren, Old Boy!:lol
Tomorrow, I'm planning on picking up the flat aluminum rods for the pod supports. For the "floor" of the walkways, I'm going to replace the foam board with wood, so I can bold the metal to the wood, then attach the foam to the wood. I think this will add much stability to the model, overall.
I've decided that when the time comes, I'll have to build the interior of the rear section as well. I don't need questions like "So what's back here?" that will be inevitable if I don't do it! I have a friend who collects beer bottles, and he always laments the first question everyone who sees the collection asks, "Did you drink all these yourself?"! :lol
Anyhow, when that time comes, I'll probably need some degree of reference for this rear section. I don't have much.
Glad to see you returning, by the way.:)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Sounds, great and thank you! I will dig up any reference pics I can regarding the rear walk way/WC but I fear there is very little to go on......excuse the pun

Ha, ha!:lol

Yeah, I didn't figure there would be much reference available for a non-existant set! I'm just puzzling over how to create a miniature nuclear reactor, and should it be labeled, in classic t.v style, "CAUTION: RADIATION" ..!

Ooh, ooh! I got lucky: I just found some styrene tubing in storage, just the right size for the gridwork!:) It's about 8 or 9 feet worth, which probably isn't enough, but more than enough to get a start!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Since I don't have my aluminum rods yet, and since the front and back landing pod setups will be practically identical to each other, it makes sense to build both sets at once. So, I'm building the other two pods in the meantime. Pretty much a cut and paste from the previous pod posts, so nothing new to mention about these. The clear tape you see is to anchor the pieces at the proper angles while the glue sets.

And for chrisisall's personal enjoyment, here's one more picture of the accumulating foam board scraps!:cool

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Small update- with an action-packed interlude!

So, this morning I had a little time, and chose to spend it coating a landing pod with styrene.
View attachment 94696
Then , I heard a bang of sorts from the other end of the house. I went to investigate, and lo and behold, a young black bear had torn down my bird feeder.:eek

This is about the sixth or seventh time this has happened, but this was the first time I was able to get a few pictures of the fellow before he wandered off on his merry way. My feeder was nearly empty, so he didn't really get much of a snack. It seemed odd to me that its mother was nowhere to be seen, then I heard on the radio news a few minutes later (oddly enough) that a black bear had been shot in my town. I couldn't help but wonder if this little fellow was it's kid!:cry

Well, with the bear gone, and time limited, I went back to my Eagle pods. Somehow, I foolishly made one of them a tad too small, but it was easy enough to compensate for this by adding a thin cardboard layer to it before I add the styrene.

As to the cause, the beveled edges and the flat sides are nearly exactly the same height, and I may have dumbly measured the wrong one prior to making the parts. :facepalm This will not impact the final product in any way, but I promised to share my mistakes to add a thrilling "you are there" feeling to this build! It's also a good lesson not to make model parts when overtired!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

I like your thoughts on the customization, I didn't want to quote the whole thing though. Since the Eagles were manufactured out of earth and moon resources, I feel that there are differences between all eagles. there maybe things such as the spines, wiring harnesses, some gauges etc that are all standard in particularly items that were exclusively made on earth. So with the Moon sourced items there would be differences.

As for styrene, I'm experimenting with foamies and foam core project boards from wal mart. I need to locate some thinner foam core though as I can't as the scale I'm working on the foam core I have is a little to thick and the foamies are too flexible.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Thanks, greylocke. Yeah, I figured not having Earth to rely on, anything from moon buggy parts to damaged sections of the base might eventually wind up on an Eagle. Kind of like you or I patching a hole in a car exhaust pipe with a beer can!

How thick is your foam board> The stuff I normally use is about 3/8 inch thick. Thre new thicker board I just discovered I'm using in parts is about 1/2 inch thick.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Correction, Greylocke: I meant to say that the foam board I normally use is 3/16 inch thick, not 3/8!:$

Okay, with styrene layering added, gaps filled, and everything sanded and steel-wooled smooth, the tops of the four pods are completed, sans detailing for the most part. I can't really do much with that until I know which pod is going where, since much of the detail is a mirror-image of its opposite.
Work plans changed this week, so I wasn't able to get to Home Despot for my aluminum rods. That should happen Friday. In the meantime, I'll putter along with some other part. What that turns out to be will be a surprise to us all!

Darren, where are you?? With just my build, I'm even beginning to bore myself!:unsure

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Plans keep changing, so it's no Home Depot until Sunday. So...in the meantime, I'll work on...whatever.
I had completely forgotten about these, but a number of years ago at a job I had, I had secured a bunch of metal scrap which was going to be dumped for eventual recycling. Even though I wasn't model building at the time, I recognized their 'these might come in handy someday' potential!
View attachment 94882
They were too good to pass up. Mostly stainless steel and aluminum, they are a bunch of unusual shapes, useless to anyone but us types! I de-greased and tumbled them prior to bagging them up and bringing them home. They are spotlessly clean and now some of them might come in very handy in detailing my Eagle pods and walkway surfaces. I put some in this container, awaiting their possible use!
