Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club (PIC HEAVY!)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Where exactly are you getting your supplies? I'm not a model maker but I've been interested in learning how.

I get my foam core board from a local stationary store. It's not useful on all projects, but I find invaluable at times. It's also rather inexpensive. It comes in poster-sized sheets, and it's the same stuff a lot of people use to stick photographs on at birthdays and memorials. You see them also on CSPAN a lot, when some congressman will have a chart or other visual aid on a board behind him while he goes on justifying how they spend all our money so poorly!:confused

The styrene and model stuff I get one town over from me, at a craft and hobby store. It's the kind that sells models, radio-controlled accessories, little rubber tires, airplanes, brass and aluminum strips, paints, glues, and of course styrene plastic. It comes in sheets of varying thicknesses and textures, and also rods both square and round. It's the most handy building material I've yet used, and can be cut, sanded, painted, drilled, heated and bent..you name it. One of these days I'll post some pictures of some of the various model miniatures I've made, just to give you an idea of the possibilities. I'm a modeler of moderate ability (unlike some of the creative geniuses on this site!), but the styrene definitely allows me to stretch my possibilities beyond what I once thought I could.
And cardboard, of course, you can get practically everywhere!! :lol

Oh, at first I thought my store had gone out of business since I'd stopped modeling for a while, but an internet searched confirmed that they had simply moved across town. But I do recall seeing at least several Texas locations for similar supplies. If it wasn't so late I'd give you some of them I saw, but I'm sure you can search "hobby centers" as well as I can, plus you know where you are located. Houston alone is like the size of my whole state, so anything I'd tell you could be light-years from your location!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

I'm down by corpus, about 45 miles north almost on the gulf. There is a hobby place in town that deals almost exclusively with R/C stuff. I'll stop in and check out what he's got in stock. Plus I'll be in Corpus this weekend taking my daughter's guitar to the shop to get a machine head fixed and restrung. The Michaels and hobby lobby in Corpus really don't have much in the way of free form modeling stuff and very little molding and casting supplies. I'll just have to check some of the manufacturers websites to find suppliers local to me. Thanks again for the info.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Well, I came to discover that the old reliable hobby shop I've frequented over the years is no longer in business. That's always a depressing thing...but alas, time goes on. Too bad, though, especially in a town where the newspapers always go on and on about finding things for the youth to do after school and such. :unsure
Anyhow, I'm working on the structure of the walkway until I get my grubby hands on some more styrene (which should happen today).
View attachment 93311View attachment 93312
I'll have to decide very soon on just what part of the walkway I'm going to leave un-built for the cutaway view feature. Right now, I'm thinking about the top half of the wall and about half of the ceiling. Or, I could do a diagonal cut along the length of the wall. I'll have to build a crude mock-up of this once more interior is built up to better judge which will work best. I've got to try to balance building as much of the interior as possible, yet leaving as much open as possible for a good view. Opinions are welcome!

The rear wall is under construction. The door trim awaits styrene. Then I can start of the wall and compartment details!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

I just updated above, a whlle ago. I've got another coming tomorrow. Now that I've got my styrene, there's no stopping me now!:cool

I'm not sure where Darren is, though. He's not posted for a while now...:confused

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Over the weekend I was able to work on the three remaining door frames for the interior.
Nothing special here, a few drill holes, and some trimming and sanding... :confused
View attachment 93579View attachment 93580View attachment 93581View attachment 93582View attachment 93583View attachment 93584View attachment 93585View attachment 93586View attachment 93587
I used the cut-out center pieces of the frames, and cut them into strips (why waste material?) which I can use to build up the thickness of the frames. Yep, then sanded and trimmed... :confused
View attachment 93588View attachment 93589View attachment 93590View attachment 93591View attachment 93592
Here, gluing the two door halves together and trimming off the excess around the edge, I'm now ready to start working on the rear wall of the forward walkway.
View attachment 93593View attachment 93594View attachment 93595
Next, I marked in pencil and cut into the frames the segmented-looking patterns around the frame. Then I again cut out thin plastic strips and built up the inner sides of the door frames. I had a little difficulty holding on to some of the parts while gluing, but that might be because my morning coffee hadn't kicked in yet!
View attachment 93596View attachment 93597View attachment 93598
The finished and detailed part!
There's something about the assembled, unpainted pieces together: in some strange way, it almost seems a shame to have to paint it! There's something about the look of the raw, monochromatic plastic parts put together that I like for some reason...
View attachment 93599
This week, when possible, I'm going to proceed to build the interior of the walkway. I just know that if I decide to add lighting, I'm going to have to decide real soon!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Colour me impressed, as USUAL.:thumbsup

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Starting with foam core, I cut the next basic form for the walkway. I was careful to allow room to allow for the thickness of the eventual ceiling.
View attachment 93864View attachment 93865
Contemplating where to go from here. Then I found myself wondering what this wider area at the rear end of the walkway would have been intended for. Seems that space could have been filled up with some sort of big, practical looking tanks or power-suggestive doodads that while never really seen directly, could have added an element of realistic function to the interior shots.
Oh, anyhow, I figured out what do do.
View attachment 93866View attachment 93867View attachment 93868
I added two straight up styrene rods, to strengthen the contours of the corner and to ensure a solid grip with the styrene outer skin. I glued one edge while holding a metal edge to get a tight, straight fit along the wall. I then ran adhesive along the other edge, and wrapped the styrene tightly and held the edge down along its length while the glue set to again have a nice, straight snug edge.
View attachment 93869View attachment 93870View attachment 93871View attachment 93872View attachment 93873
Using more square styrene rods to build up the wall and details. Adding an outer skin layer to the glued-together styrene "2X4" 's, I then slipped the part in place and traced the edges of the wall onto the skin. This will allow me to work on the part at nearly finished size, when the excess is trimmed off the edges. Then, the square space for that shelf-storage compartment space is carved out.
View attachment 93874View attachment 93875View attachment 93876View attachment 93877View attachment 93878
Now, placing the new section in place I can determine the maximim depth for the "shelf". Then, adding the sides and bottoms I double-check everything before I proceed to the next step. Before I get to that I have to smooth the join lines where the shelf pieces meet in the front. with some fine sandpaper.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

It's looking very nice. I too hope Darren is doing ok. He had said he had some family issues, I hope they haven't flared up.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Hi Bob.
Here is a screen grab of the wider area in the forward walkway. It comes from the first season episode, The Full Circle. It would be well worth your time to re-watch the episode, as there is a wealth of views of this area that are not seen in any other episode. The wall space is divided into two columns of shelving, which is mirrored on the other side.
Untitled-1.jpg

The column nearest the door is split into three equal shelf areas and the column next to it is divided into two shelf areas of equal size.
Hope that helps, Mate!
Darren

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Hey, good to see you about, Darren!:)
Yeah, Full Circle does give views as had nowhere else. I've been checking that out. I just thought that some big, meaty tanks of whatever might've looked cool, is all. But it's kind of refreshing at this point: not working on doors makes it feel like I'm working on a completely different model!:lol

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Sometimes, I think that posting pictures of a work-in-progress build is a bit
like watching some foods being prepared: they just don't look appealing
until they're done! Anyhow...

I covered the rest of the wall (except for the second layer of thin plastic for
the curved end), and next will fill in the join lines between the pieces.
View attachment 94082View attachment 94083
I've decided to do the same as I did for the command module, and have the
cut-away line halfway up the wall. Hopefully this will add a bit of visual
continuity to the model. As a result, the port side of the walkway interior will
basically be the same build procedure as the starboard, except I'm
stopping abruptly halfway up. What remains should easily suggest the
symmetrical layout of the walls.
View attachment 94084View attachment 94085View attachment 94086View attachment 94087View attachment 94088View attachment 94089View attachment 94090View attachment 94091View attachment 94092
So the ultra-basic components are coming into place. Next, added the thin
plastic layer to the starboard curvature and filled the join line so I could
sand the join line smooth.
View attachment 94093View attachment 94094
I added a coat of white primer to the side walls to see how the join lines
looked. They seem to smooth out pretty well, so I'll give these one more
light sand with steel wool, then eventually move on to the final primer before
painting and detailing.
View attachment 94095View attachment 94096
Soon it'll get more interesting, as I'll need to start integrating the walkway
with the front landing pods, since this is where they connect with the ship.
This all needs to be planned, since there's also the exterior detailing of the
walkway and the surrounding cage to factor in. What's attached to what and
when is important to know, so I don't build myself into a corner, and have to
tear anything off to get at something I overlooked. I suspect it'll be the
exterior detailing, then the cage, then the landing pods. Before any of this,
though, the interior must be done and assembled into one unit. Any opinions
from experience are welcome, as usual!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Enjoy your dizzy, chris! Hopefully more to come. Since it looks like I'm "filling in" for Darren for the moment, I'll have to work extra-hard to bring you your fix!:cool

Thinking about structural support issues with the model tonight...and what better way to work that out than to actually build the landing pods (or start to, at least)?:)

When I first saw this thick foam core board about a month ago, I knew instantly what I was going to use it for, and today the day has arrived. The thick pieces should offer a pretty good deal of structural integrity, and should be able to hold up to whatever means of support I put in there.
View attachment 94179View attachment 94180View attachment 94181View attachment 94182View attachment 94183View attachment 94184
Measuring and building, piece by piece, the pod begins to take recognizable form. Quite a bit of foam wedges accumulate as I trim away the angles, but on one occasion (so far) where I had cut an angle too shallow, I filled the gap with one of these wedges which corrected my error nicely. Glued into place, the parts are sturdy!
View attachment 94185View attachment 94186View attachment 94187
I'm only building the top sections of the pods right now, as the lower half (technically, lower 1/3) integrates with the landing legs, so those will require specialized attention in themselves.
View attachment 94188View attachment 94189View attachment 94190View attachment 94191
I need to study more of how the pods attach to the ship, but i'm almost positive I'll be using flat metal rods which will run underneath the walkway and be bolted to horizontal wooden supports within the pods. I should be able to do this "invisibly" by bending and integrating the rods with the outer ship details.
View attachment 94192View attachment 94193
Once the pods are done, they will be styrene coated and detailed. Considering that each pod is 26 sided, this is surprisingly fun to work on thus far. I'm sure this will change, but I'm enjoying it while I can!:lol

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

DUDE!!! :eek What did you do, stick rocket fuel up your butt or something!!!??? :lol
Seems that this time I am having to take out is working wonders with your build! Totally awesome and you got me beat for build quality at every turn! Nice to see you have moved onto other areas :)
Stunning work, and thanks for holding the fort! I will be back in a few days....

MORE UPDATES, PLEASE! This is incredible!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Darren Atlanthia! He lives!! :thumbsup

Thanks for your ever-kind words. Personally, I think your build is superior: I look at yours all the time for immediate humility (and swipe ideas, if I can :love )! But I must admit it is nice to be working on something other than the command module and doors. It was feeling like the thread should be renamed Space:1999 Eagle Transporter Door Build Club!
Kept the thread going, though!:cool

I finished up the top part of the first pod last night, and this evening I'm beginning the second one. Then I'll be able to build a support which will integrate the pods to the walkway.
View attachment 94285View attachment 94286View attachment 94287
So, the second pod build begins!
View attachment 94288View attachment 94289View attachment 94290
Very much like the first one, as you might guess. In the case of this one, at least I was able to entertain myself while the glue set by laying some styrene over part of the first pod and adding some detailing.
View attachment 94291View attachment 94292View attachment 94293View attachment 94294View attachment 94295
I did make one boo-boo, though. I cut one side a bit too short, so had to insert a sliver of foam board to make up the difference. Seemed to work out okay, though.
View attachment 94296View attachment 94297View attachment 94298
With two sections I can work with, now I can begin to search for the metal for my support brace.
View attachment 94299View attachment 94300
Stay tuned!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Again, I am astounded at your progress! May I ask what you are using for reference regarding the shoulder pod detailing? I've not seen that particular design layout.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Even this looks cool.:lol

Ha, ha...yeah, kind of a work-in-progress in itself!

Darren, re: reference. Some of it (as shown thus far) is directly fromn the 'I think it looks cool' blueprints. For the majority of it, however, it will retain familiar characteristics. I'm just doing a bit of imporovising here and there!

You didn't think I could leave random bits of plastic scrap go unused , did you?:lol
