Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club (PIC HEAVY!)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Thanks, Guys! Just the Step-son being a C*ck...Fighting etc... Kids, Huh!? :lol

I think the model is progressing but I need Bob to pick some holes....bring me back to earth a little! :lol

Ahh my 18 year old daughter is the one who gets into trouble. She has quite a mouth when she's angry, and her anger turns off her built in censor. I'm just glad I taught her to curse in with german, russian, italian and french. With a little bit of greek thrown in. Unfortunately one of her teachers is from russia so of course knows russian and german. She thinks it's hilarious though.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

That must be a great feeling to nearly have all that behind you..... How many door sides do you need to do in total? 12? I still have six to do.....:cry

Not quite 12: remember, I'm not as ambitious as you are, and won't have working doors!:lol I have one for the command module, two for the walkway, and two for the passenger pod. My math brings that total to five! I may end up having one door area open, in which case I'll just need the "edges" of two "open" doors visible. In that case, I'm wasting time doing the 2 door surfaces now...but art least I'll have the option to use them later.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Yup it looks really good. I'm sorry to hear you're having some family issues. I hope it's nothing serious.

Well, last year my sister died, which was just a precursor to this year. Mom passed away in January, my beloved dog in March. That hopefully was the worst of it. A lot of little things followed, which in proportion aren't nearly as bad. It just all seems to be happening this year for some reason. :confused

See, I don't have kids...so I guess in a way I'm the lucky one, from a certain point of view! lol

I lost my sister at the end of last month. I know how that makes you feel...

So, are you doing the interiors of the Walkways and Passenger Pod? If so, you are going to have to show both sides of each door, even if they don't open....:confused

Yeah. Mine was just four years older than me, which kind of shed a new light on this thing called mortality..

Exactly, Darren. Whether a double-door arrangement or not, only two sides will be visible!:)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

So, if I understand correctly, your Passenger Pod will not be removable?

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Oh, Darren: something occurred to me as I was building that you might find interesting to ponder while you build your ship, too. You do realize that if your Eagle (or mine) had a working clock on board, it would have to move slower than a real one in order to stay in scale?

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

I took one door frame and glued it to a thin styrene piece for the backing. Trimming the excess edges, I then used it to trace the outline onto the piece of foam core board which will be the basis of the front end on the walkway.
View attachment 92249View attachment 92250
I cut through the foam core carefully, so as to (hopefully) not cut through the paper on the other side. It would have helped not to have used a brand new blade for this, but of course I just changed blades prior to this step. I then chipped out the foam, to form the door recess for it to rest within.
View attachment 92251View attachment 92252
One thing about an Eagle build is the fun just never ends: being a new blade, it cut through the foam at each and every point of contact, so it made about a billion tiny little foam chips. Add those to static electricity, and just imagine the rest!
View attachment 92253View attachment 92254
Anyhow, the door fits nicely, and I can now proceed to building up the rest of the walkway, now that I've established the door dimensions. Later on, I'll add false door pockets on the sides, much as Darren did. The main difference being that his function, while mine will just be dummies!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Doors look great Mate!:) Well done on your progress but with absolute Buddie Build Love to you, why on earth would you want to compromise the aesthetics of your Eagle, if there is to be no gain in function? :confused I really would hesitate before changing the outward design if there is no advantage to doing so.....I understand that you want to put my door pockets in to give the appearance of them opening, but if they can't open...it would be like wheels that don't turn...
I believe that you are on course to build something beautiful, and why would you potentially detract from that when it would be perfectly acceptable to follow the original studio model design, as you do not wish the doors to function anyway.:$

Sorry.....sounds like I am ranting, but I'm not at all. I hope this shows just how passionate I am about your build, and how much I think of you, Mate.:)

Like I said, everything you do on this Eagle is just so crisp and clean; amazing skill and workmanship.(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Thank you for all your kind words and faith in me, O Darren. You bring up good points, which I've pondered myself. I suppose these two pictures from the original ship sum up my thoughts:
View attachment 92302View attachment 92303
Now, I understand that these models were probably built under a fierce timetable, and that the model builders and set designers were separate units. But looking at those doors, did it not cross anyone's mind that that door would have absolutely nowhere to go when opened? I'm not about to quibble with the modeling geniuses who made these things, I'm just reacting to them as I see them now! I rather like the small compartment leading into the command module, as a crawlway would probably be more accurate in real terms than a doorway. But then you'd have actors crawling into the module head first, which wouldn't work dramatically, I suppose. The door on the rear end reminds me of the door on the ends of the travel tube, with the same problem of "nowhere to go".
You're right that if mine don't function, there's no point in door pockets. Maybe I'm too grounded in reality, and logic tells me to add what should be there. I'm going to hold off on those additions anyway, so there's time to change my mind. I remember from past builds that if something like that bothered me, and I ignored it and went ahead anyway, it ended up bothering me later. Maybe that's my guiding motivation. In my youtube videos, even thought it served no purpose, I had drawn blueprints of the buildings I used, just so I'd be able to grasp what was "really" there, rather than winging it then realizing later there was a window on the outside where I'd depicted a solid wall from the inside.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

A bit more progress:
Forward walkway door frame
I measured and trimmed pieces of styrene and notched them accordingly. Next, a thinner styrene strip was placed inside the edge of the frame, and I drew a line to mark the width the piece would need to be.
View attachment 92458View attachment 92459
I used the thicker pieces to use as a guide and cut the thinner ones to the appropriate length, then engraved with a knife the corresponding notched lines, being careful not to press too hard, since these pieces are quite thin. I then glued them together to form 'L' shaped piece which will fit onto the door as a complete unit, instead of messing around with wet glue, small pieces and confined space later if I tried to assemble them to the door one-by-one. After those were done, I made two shorter, similar pieces for the top and bottom.

The corners are going to be a little trickier. Normally, I'd Dremel out the curved edges, but my Dremel tool bit the dust a while back and I haven't replaced it, so I'm using a round file instead. The last picture is a nearly finished piece. Once that's done, I'll make three more, obviously (and I won't bore you with that, I'll only make mention if some unique problem comes up)! Then, all eight pieces will be glued together and painted as a unit.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

To replace your dremel you might want to look at this.

Bench Grinder with Flex Shaft

I used to have one of these, in fact I have one budgeted for next month. The flex shaft works pretty good, but it works better if you replace the collets with actual dremel collets. 10,000 RPM on the grinder and the flex shaft, speed controllable by a rheostat on the front. The one I used to have didn't wander when you got the speed set. The only problem I had with mine was finding the wheels and buffs fr it. Never had any problems with the flex shaft.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Yeah, those look pretty good, greylocke. I didn't think too much about my Dremel dying a couple of years ago, but I must say it's been conspicuous by its absence. Pretty handy tool, one which lasted me nearly 30 years!

Oh, and as long as I'm here:
View attachment 92539
two nearly-finished corners. These are a bit difficult to shape, as it's hard to hold the tiny corner pieces with one hand and file with a round hand file with the other! I'll touch them up when I've finished all four.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

An update to keep the thread alive::unsure

I finished building the door frame, and did a little final sanding and shaping. As much of a nuisance as this part is to build, it's a favorite piece when finished, as it just clicks satisfyingly into place into the foam core cavity!
View attachment 92853View attachment 92854View attachment 92855
Next, I began to paint the frame. Not much to say here: first one coat of black, then red, then, touch-up second coats of both.
View attachment 92856View attachment 92857
I had to make another wall, as this one's size and proportion wasn't right, as I'm not going to assemble the walkway in quite the same way I originally planned to. I also had to make a very minor tweak in the floor level, to insure it stays consistent with the command module. This part was no big deal, as it's an easy one to make.
View attachment 92858View attachment 92859View attachment 92860View attachment 92861
Now with the new wall made, I just have to test-fit the pieces, and fit they did!
I may possibly make the rear walkway wall next, but I have to pick up more styrene tomorrow, as my supply is running dangerously short. Since I wasn't even planning to build an Eagle until the moment I started, I wasn't exactly prepared supply-wise!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED 21/04 (PIC HEAVY!)

Where exactly are you getting your supplies? I'm not a model maker but I've been interested in learning how.
