Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club (PIC HEAVY!)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED Sept 23rd (PIC HEAVY!)

I like the moon buggy! The spacesuit shots remind me of that Martin Landau/Barbara Bain publicity shot of them by the buggy, with their helmets off on an airless moon.:lol

Actually I got to thinking: how did you attach the tires? I was always under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that polypropylene was fairly resistant to most adhesives? :confused

Well, industrial grade super glue seems to glue it; not only to other things, but to itself, and to me too! :lol

Funnily enough, Bob, it was that very pic of them, helmetless on an airless moon, that inspired me to take those photos........great minds, obviously DO think alike ;)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED Sept 23rd (PIC HEAVY!)

Then again, your inspiration of the photo sparked the thought in me in the first place, so it might be more accurate to say that I'm merely reflecting the image of the great mind upon which I gaze!:cool

private message to Darren: Let's stage a big fight in here to attract more readers! :lol

Now as for that glue thing, isn't stronger glue just gonna lead to stronger plastics? Then again stronger glues? It's gonna get to be an adhesive arms race!:eek

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED Sept 23rd (PIC HEAVY!)

I've been off for a bit, had a bad month plus a prescription error really messed with me. But I'm back up for a bit, need to talk to the Dr again about my meds.

We've been off the air for a while.....they'll come back. Remember the old quote: "If you build it, they will come!" :)

Sorry to hear that, mate but glad to see you are back on your feet. As always, it's good to have you around.

I did manage to do a little today inbetween all the running around:-/

I have finally sourced the material with which I will be constructing the fore and aft walkways. It is a 3mm (1/8 inch) thick fibreboard that is used on the back of flat packed wardrobes and for the bottoms of drawers in kitchens etc...when it is cut into small squares/rectangles for a project like this, it becomes immensely strong. I shall be gluing each walkway floor and wall panel to each other AND to the cage itself, which will probably make the cages strong enough to take my weight. The advantage is that they will still be incredibly light.

So, firstly, I had to sand/prepare the cage for spraying and then, I applied 5 solid coats, before again wet sanding to remove any dust or grit from the finish.

I will, of course, be adding more coats, but this was to ensure good coverage in areas that will be difficult to paint later after installation of the walkway walls and the cage shelves.

Talking of which, I started the first shelf today and have commenced the construction of the greeblies to fix to it. I cannot kit bash due to my budget and my chosen scale so, everything has to be made from other things. Long and painful process, this, as each separate part has to be completely built from scratch. Anyway, here are a few pictures of today's work; two without a flash and two with. I hope you like how it is shaping up:)

As always, thank you for looking in and all comments are welcome!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED Sept 25th (PIC HEAVY!)

Looks like you're taking the same approach to the shelf greeblies as I am: make it up as we go along! Harder than I expected it to be, too: can't really use anything "off the shelf" for the shelf that's too recognizable, or the scale gets destroyed.

All in all, you're looking good over there, Darren. Glad to see you back at it. For a while I suspected you had bailed out on me, leaving me holding the bag!:lol

I shoulda known better!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED Sept 25th (PIC HEAVY!)

I wouldn't do that to you, Bob. Not in a million years.:)

But my shelf greeblies will be as screen accurate as I can get them to Eagle 2. I have sourced some really good reference pics of the originals as you can see on the iPad behind the cage, so I am frantically searching for bits and bobs to chop up and glue together that will make a passable likeness.

Once the shelves are constructed, sprayed and test fitted, I can then add the the 'X' bars that are still missing from my cages. I left them out until the last minute to give me more access for positioning and gluing etc...

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED Sept 25th (PIC HEAVY!)

Wow...just imagine if you can build things like this Eagle now, the things you'll be able to do a million years from now!!:eek

Hopefully, I will be long Gone by then......buried in a full size CM!;)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED Sept 25th (PIC HEAVY!)

Oh yeah: I forgot to mention that I found the 'X' bars the most challenging part of the cage. The bonus part, though, is that they were like the last step to completion!:) Sort of like one final hurdle 'till the end!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED Sept 25th (PIC HEAVY!)

I had a thought last night, and since I've woken up way too early, I might as well post the idea now. Feedback is more than welcome, since this might be nutty and I need to be stopped before it's too late!:behave

When my Eagle is finished, I thought about building a bit of a display base for it. First thought was basically a section of a lift platform of Alpha, but I thought that might be visually stale. Being that the vast majority of the model will be white, what better way to offset that than by having something colorful to contrast it with?
And what could be more colorful, 1999-wise, than the planet Piri?:cool

Not the whole thing as pictured, of course, just a section which would extend beyond the edges of the model a couple of inches. This would make the dimensions of the base roughly 20" x 44", and of course it'd include some of those white ball thingies which seem to be a common memory from the series, even by people who didn't really watch.

Also, from a symbolic standpoint, it'd "justify" the lack of people on board the ship! :love

What say you?

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED Sept 25th (PIC HEAVY!)

I'm so glad to see activity on this thread again!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED Sept 25th (PIC HEAVY!)

I like how the frame cage is coming together, have you gotten the spine completed yet? I thought you said you were having a sourcing issue with some of the parts or was that Bob?

I haven't finished the spine yet, alas......I just need to join the two sides together, top and bottom, so I think it will happen soon. Today I have been concentrating on pushing this front walkway and cage along towards completion, as I seem to have half finished parts lying around everywhere at present! :unsure
I need to push to get back on track with this project and start actually finishing some sections...

I will Hopefully post an update later. :)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED Sept 25th (PIC HEAVY!)

Well Here is today's update! :)

I have been concentrating on pushing the front walkway along towards completion and I have made some progress to that effect. I have cut and glued the walls in place and they are solid and strong.
FrontWalkway1.jpg

FrontWallkway2.jpg

I also made a start on the shelving units that take up the rest of the wall space in this compartment. As always, the T.V. Set is nowhere near as long as the the Eagle Dimensions, so I have had to stretch the shelves by about 10 mm to take up the gap. I will construct a mirror image of this unit tomorrow, for the other side.
FrontWalkway3.jpg

FrontWalkway4.jpg

At the moment, the internal units and shelves are just placed for test fitting.

I have also decided on the colour I shall be using to paint the interior. It's a sort of sand/beige colour which is way more accurate than the cocoa colour that you can see on the left hand unit. Suffice to say that I shall be repainting it to match the other.

I also marked out the floor markings and put a coat of paint down, as you can see.

What a difference a coat of paint makes! :) I am happy that it is at least recognisable as the compartment that it represents. I will endeavour to push this section on further tomorrow and hopefully, I can do a little more work on the cage shelves that sit just outside the walkway.

Thank you for looking in and I hope you enjoyed seeing the progress.

All comments/critiques are, as always, very welcome :)
Darren

That is such a hard stage to be at. Whether through lack of time or motivation, a project like this sits incomplete. Then (with me at least) comes the fear that critical information will be forgotten, or remembering the placement of loose parts will be lost to the sands of time. I'm hoping this won't happen here...though you at least, Darren, seem to have fallen right back into it!:)

I have found it hard going today, Bob. Bunged up full of a new cold, right on the back of the Flu! What has taken the time today has been the measuring and calculating, to ensure that the passenger pod will indeed sit snugly between the two cages, leaving no discernible gaps where the sliding airlock doors meet.
Because my two walkway doors that connect to either end of the pod have to sit beyond the edge of the cage, I have had to slide the front cage forward by 2.5 mm and the rear cage back by 2.5mm. That's quite a lot, even on a 50 inch model. I had to make enough room to allow for a door sandwiched by its walls, which is exactly 5mm.
These cages are a nightmare! :lol

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED Sept 26th (PIC HEAVY!)

Well, if it makes you feel any better, most houses when built generally stray from the blueprints here and there, so I guess that makes it okay for us, too!:)
