Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club (PIC HEAVY!)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED July 17th (PIC HEAVY!)

Hmmm your pods just reminded me of something I saw back when I was a teenager.

NASA and ESA were trying to design a space station that would be easy to assemble. They designed a weirdly shaped and curved panel that could be stacked and was easy to assemble. Once assembled it was a 3 meter by 3 meter module that could be added onto 3 meters at a time. And a stack of the panels enough to build a 3X3X12 module was only 1 meter tall/thick. Does that ring any bells or lights for anyone else?

Hmm..those new shapes look vaguely familiar...! I hope you don't go through what I did with them..for some reason, building four of them seemed more like 12!:unsure

And yeah, I share your feelings about the primer. Seeing our parts in wood, metal, plastic and what have you, then to get the coat of paint on them does seem to take them to that next level of believability! That's cool when that happens!

Funny, too, is how much that moon buggy without wheels looks so much like a ferris wheel ride!:lol

Funnily enough, because of the method I have devised here for drawing out the pod as a flat "unfolded box," it only took 20 minutes to draw, score the fold lines and assemble. Also, there are only 4 glue points for the whole structure (as you see it above) plus gluing down the triangle flaps. This was the first and, as I say, it took about 20 minutes, so I expect the process to be even quicker now that I have worked it out.

Yes........paint is a wonderful thing, Bob.....Ahhhhh:)

As for the ferris wheel ride..........That sounds like my whole life of late! :lol

That sounds totally plausible, Mate. I vaguely remember something about that but I couldn't swear to it. Something else that they spent billions of dollars researching and then binned. It kind of comes back to the Nasa expenditure on designing a ball point pen that would write in zero gravity....Millions and millions wasted on that project alone, whereas the Soviets just used pencils.....and we wonder why the Space program is in tatters....:rolleyes

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED July 17th (PIC HEAVY!)

I've got this video in my head about it. I remember some scientist holding a scale piece in his hand and he mentioned Space 1999 specifically as one of the inspirations for the design. The panel was a square that had a fold/bulge on it and he showed a group of the pieces stacked together. Like I said seeing the way you did your pod made that pop in my head, now I can't seem to shake it out.

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED July 17th (PIC HEAVY!)

Did some searching and found a PDF that had an image similar to the design.

The panels looked like the module connector, only they were a group of panels that could be bolted together to form larger modules. Maybe now that I found this it will get out of my head. Oh and the link to the PDF file is:

Yes, it is VERY Space 1999! Well remembered, Mate!

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED July 17th (PIC HEAVY!)

All I can contribute to this discussion is the memories of my school texts which spoke of "one day man will reach the moon"...after the fact, of course.:wacko

I have a weird memory. Things go in and bounce around a bit some finds a home and sticks some doesn't and some become a fruit of an obsession :D

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED July 17th (PIC HEAVY!)

Hi everyone! Just a quick update. During a pretty busy two days, I managed to find the time today to build the other three shoulder pods. Obviously, I then had to lay out all the sections that I have started work on, to see how it is shaping up....

This update is pretty picture heavy but it shows the state of play from every angle. I would appreciate your opinions as to how you think she is shaping up!

Anyway enough talk! Here are the pictures :)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED July 18th (PIC HEAVY!)

Looking good, Matey! Looks like you have enough of it left to keep you busy 'till I resume mine. In the meantime I'll mull over my method of 'skinning' my command module.
Though I did notice that your two guests (or wife and one guest) don't seem too interested!:unsure What's wrong with them? Or are they just busy with girl stuff like recipes and yarn?

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED July 18th (PIC HEAVY!)

True, that: no spaceships and Three Stooges for them!
Funny, my Wife likes the Marx Brothers, but HATES the Three Stooges. :confused
She likes Trek, but can't differentiate between the series Enterprise & the movie refit...
It's a Galaxy Quest-level conundrum.:lol

:lol:lol:lol

That's my wife and my step-daughter! and no, they are not interested but they don't interfere either! :lol

That's probably for the best: that way they can't tell you that you're doing it wrong!:)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED July 18th (PIC HEAVY!)

I'll get my wife to knit a jumbo Eagle sock to keep it warm at night! :lol

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED July 18th (PIC HEAVY!)

How about a red, cross-shaped doily for it to sit upon?:)

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED July 18th (PIC HEAVY!)

Looking very good, have you figured out your coffee table display for it yet?

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED July 18th (PIC HEAVY!)

:lol Not yet! One million other things at a time! :lol

I doubt in all honesty that I will be keeping her when she is finished so right now, I am just concentrating on finishing it....

Re: Space 1999 Eagle Transporter Build Club UPDATED July 18th (PIC HEAVY!)

What?! You're not going to keep your wife when you're done with her??!:eek
