Soooooooo...this new Hasbro 6" scale snowspeeder

Woah. Way on that. And I can't think of why they would do that. It won't help fit figures that shouldn't fit (because the "real" ship is too small). That's weird. I sense something. Something I've not felt since...someone asked about the FM MF, "Hey, are the mandibles supposed to be parallel like that?"
 
To my eye the entire cockpit is a bit too short. and the slope of the "roof" is too flat. The rear edge of the roof should be a bit taller but a noticeable amount and the front should be a little taller. I think that would "fix" the slant in the front of the cockpit that you noticed. Even with that its not a lot. But it is something that people my aim to fix... although it might involve mods to the top fuselage to fix the parts where it connects to the rear of the Cockpit. Its still totally worth the money, and mines been on order since the first day.
 
I guess it got released early. Mine just showed up on my doorstep. OMFG this thing is huge!! However, I've got a four day weekend and today I am way too drunk to mess with it.

Tomorrow I'm gonna tear this sucker apart, do stuff to it, and put it back together again!!.......Crap, my Luke figure isn't scheduled to be here for 3 more weeks.
 
Yeah, I got mine a couple of days ago. Just ordered the Luke to go in the front...NOW to repaint it and fill in the screw holes and hinge seams.
 
I think I'll wait until somebody puts an actual measuring tape to it... measuring with an eyeball to a too small cutting mat - not exactly precise :) but I appreciated the attempt to get a ballpark.:).

I doubt it will be the same - they never are - but close is about as good as you can expect from what is essentially a toy...

we're also assuming that the Rinzler measurements are accurate. published measurements are far to often totally wrong. I think a good image overlay will tell the tale really. I'm sure someone will do it :)

No offense, but I don't care. This ain't the Studio Scale thread--just General Modelling. Ever since I was a kid in the 70s I preferred the ships over the action figures, cuz they were BIG!!....You can throw out all the "male over-compensation" jokes you like, I don't care. I like my toys BIG!!! I grew up with 12" GI Joes, Johnny West, and all that stuff. When I was a tyke, Christmas toys were as big as you were. lol .......

I hated when everything got shrunk down during the oil crisis of the late 70s. And that is why toys became smaller. The tv commercials would try to convince you that you were getting a better thing because it was smaller. I never fell for it. MicroMachines and all that junk--even as a kid I knew that was a rip off. Even Star Wars figures of the time---I wanted ships to be actually to scale to the figures. I wanted an X-wing that was about 30 inches long to fit the action figures... A Falcon should be about 4 feet long to fit the action figures...Sure, not practical or economical, but even as a kid I knew what "scale" was.

I remember getting the first x-wing model. The pilot was pretty small compared to the length of the ship. So, I knew the ship was actually big.. Then I got the x-wing toy, compared to Luke, it was only about one third the length it was supposed to be. I remember, as a kid, being really ticked off that none of the SW vehicles were to scale for the figures.....Maybe the Landspeeder....Until 1980 Christmas...The snowspeeder came out... Holy figgin frakkin fuq!!! Not only was it pretty much screen accurate (which nothing had been before) it was actually to "movie" scale with the action figures. This blew my mind...Even that AT AT.....not big enough!

I only knew one thing--I wanted my toys "right"...damn the cost, damn whatever.....and almost none of them were. Although, I was intelligent enough to know why that would never happen or be cost effective (I was a kid, but I wasn't stupid).

Hell, I wanted ships big enough for the 12" figures......yeah, I know, never gonna happen. Back in 1978 I even tried to build a Millenium Falcon to fit the 3 3/4 action figures. Two metal garbage can lids and a lot of work beyond my capability did not yield the best results. The cockpit started with a margerine cup. It fit the figures, but damn, cutting out all those windows was a bitch!! I had no skills or tools. I remember I used some kind of round french fry strainer I took from my Mom's kitchen for a radar dish. Wasn't great, but it was to scale. The whole thing was about the size of the 5 footer, however I never got too far with it. It actually sat in my parent's storage shed up until about 1992. My Dad asked me what I wanted to do with it, I couldn't believe they had actually saved it that long. I told him to throw it away (along with that briefcase I had full of 'dirty books') LOL!



Uh........Okay, I'm gonna stop now because I am really drunk..........whew....

But this new snowspeeder is pretty cool..................................

Are you planning on taking it apart to paint it? That was my original plan, however there are only 5 screws on the bottom. I've got the feeling this sucker isn't going to be as easy to take apart as the old Kenner toys. There are several tiny individual panels on the bottom that look like they may hide screws, I'm not sure. Have you gotten that far?

I'm also concerned about reproducing all the red Arubesh writing on it, triangles, red stripes, etc. The thing has got a pretty good factory paintjob, however a custom one always looks better (plus, that's part of the fun). If I don't go the full route, maybe just a light wash and some drybrushing for weathering. What are your thoughts?

My only gripe with it is the cockpit windows. They are not transparent, but pretty cloudy. I suppose they could be cut out and redone, but it's some pretty thick plastic.

I do want to take it apart and repaint the entire thing. I haven't taken mine out of the box. Are the red accents stickers? I want to mount it to a base like the Master Replicas models.
 
This is so cool. For a toy the details are amazing. I’m not an expert but if you wanted to “accurize” it I don’t think there’s a lot to do. The canopy shape looks ok to me. You would need to cover over the screws on the bottom and replace the actuators in the “flaps”, but other than that it looks amazing. Obviously the paint job could be better, but it is pretty impressive for a toy. I can imagine someone selling something of this quality and scale for USD500 before Hasbro decided to make it.

the only problem I have with it is the cloudy canopy windows. They’re really really bad - I don’t know if they’re as bad on every single one. I’m 90% sure I’m going to spend lots of money on tiny razor saws cutting out the windows and replacing them.
 
Yeah, I've just been staring at mine for a week now trying to decide what to do with it. I'm almost afraid to even try to take this thing apart. I've just got the feeling that ain't happening. I'd love to repaint it, but that means a full on tape job every time. Maybe just some slight weathering.

Agreed on the cockpit windows, but I'm kinda scared of that. I may let one or two of you experts do it first before I tackle that.
 
The seatbelts are too short. I'm finding that once you put the figures in the cockpit, it seems impossible to fix the straps back into the holes.
 
Yeah I found that too. If you position the figure just right you can sort of stretch the seatbelts until they fit into the holes. Then if you leave it for a day or two they seem to stretch a bit and will fit in more easily.
 
I’ve got a second one on its way...I’m thinking a fully lit cockpit and lasers, and maybe a soundboard too. Plus a full repaint (was it really that dark gray in ESB?) and covering up the screws etc.

Don’t hold your breath though!

Supposedly Tamiya XF-19 with maybe just a bit of white is a near prefect match for the color
