Originally was pushing for Fan Expo SF this coming weekend, but due to a combination of factors — delayed shipments and just some “bad motivator” days — won’t make that. It’s close…maybe if I really pushed, but nah…I am
way too old for 3am cry-sewing anymore. My only disappointment is that having this out before the show would’ve given some leeway with shortcuts and mistakes. With the delays, some parts of this cosplay might require a better rebuild before a first outing.
The Black Series action figure is trickling out some places and has been incredibly helpful, would recommend this for filling in blanks when attempting a cosplay build.
Here’s some blasters and doodads:
It’s an 80/20 mix of 3D printing and Five Below toys.
Won’t be sharing the STLs for these, not to be a jerk, but because I can
100% guarantee every one of these is “off” somehow. At some point we’re sure to get a lovely DK photo book and/or some pieces might find their way to Propstore, and we’ll get a really clear view of everything. But for now there was a lot of guesswork…and as better photos came along, I could see where I guessed really wrong, and no time for a re-do. Consider them stand-ins, I didn’t even much bother sanding layer lines.
As mentioned in an earlier post, I’d originally based the blasters on the D23 costume display, but from trailers and action figure it became apparent that the right hip blaster at D23 was a substitute, so I remade that (far right, above). Then in further trailers (and again the action figure) I see now that the left hip blaster was
also substituted! Argh! Well I’m gonna run with my “wrong” blaster (“X” above) for now and replace it later.
“Rivets” on chest protector (photo of orig costume at D23) appear to be Chicago screws. Amazon assortment, ten bucks. Big relief, I always do terribly with real rivets.
Still haven’t identified the original motorcycle boots, so I’m running with an off-model Goodwill find for now. A little short. The embossed logo is unfortunate, but eh, 15 foot rule. For the boot tops, miraculously found a small remnant of tan bison leather at local flea market. Regarding metal toe caps, the aftermarket type all seem to be “segmented” to form around different sizes and makes of boot. Presumably then the original boots have integrated toe caps, which might help narrow down the search. For now, a cheat: chrome paint marker. 15 foot rule again. Maybe we’re up to 20 feet now. 25?
Still have holsters and bandolier to do, and some further work on the shoulder pauldrons and mask. Oh! That reminds me though, this buckle on the original’s hip belt/holster that was driving me batty:
Haven’t tracked this down if it’s an existing object. Personal preference, I’m just hesitant to use 3D printed parts as load-bearing elements. But, thanks to action figure detail, can see there’s a
second buckle on the back of this belt. So if nothing else turns up there’s an option here to make the front buckle just a single non-functional piece, might simplify matters. In my rush, I’d already moved ahead with a “real” buckle here…and as I hadn’t found a match, made a silly easter egg of it instead, using one of those seatbelt-style buckles for now:
Fingers crossed that the show and especially this character are a delight. If he doesn’t get called a “scurvy dog” I am gonna flip this table.
