Skeleton Crew : first live action Shistavenan ?

Easier on the actor I'd guess.
I’m building a Voolvif Monn kit for the Rebel Legion which includes mini stilts.

Is the buckle on his gun-belt an automotive seat-belt buckle?
Thanks for the hi-res pictures, they're great! (y)

Anyone know if there is someone doing a mask?
I haven’t heard anything of an officially licenced mask yet, but it seems almost inevitable given the buzz around this character. Like…enthusiasm, I mean…not flies.

But I’m impatient and want to cosplay this character now, so what I’ve done is modify a California Costumes Ani-Motion Werewolf mask. It’s only like $35 at Spirit Halloween with a coupon, but the modifications are pretty extensive and relied on having a ton of craft materials already on-hand. As a simpler compromise, I see now they also do a Grizzly Bear mask…it’s got better teeth than the werewolf’s improbable zig-zag /\/\/\/\ bite (which I cut out and fully replaced with Sculpey teeth).

Been nerding out over Pirate Captain Brutus, trying to assemble a hasty cosplay for a con end of this month. If anyone else is working toward this goal, noticed some things…

First, the buckle on the “upper” (left holster) belt: in most pics so far, that round “pig nose” greeble is offset toward the top of the buckle. There was that nice photo of all the pirates in Entertainment Weekly and elsewhere…where the belt is inverted 180°. So I suppose wearing it either way could be canon, but “offset to top” is winning:
belt-greeble.jpg

Also of note there…there are belt loops for this on his coat, but on the D23 display the belt is worn over these, not passed through.

Second: blasters. On the D23 display you can see the same revolver-style blaster is worn both in the middle slot on the bandolier, and on his right hip. The action figure has five different blasters…and in the trailer, you can see this fifth design in his right hand, with all bandolier blasters in place, so presumably this is the canon right-holster blaster.
blaster-5.jpg

Though perhaps there’s an in-story reason for the blaster switcheroo. I’d already made two revolvers before the action figure photos came out, so this was a slight setback.

Two questions, if anyone else has been researching this costume:
  1. Any photos of the BACK of the costume or the action figure? Would like to know what’s going on with the chest armor and with the right holster belt (from the front it looks like it’s worn OVER the right flap of the coat, UNDER the left, with a split at the back as gunslinger coats often have.
  2. Does anyone recognize his boots? That tan flap at the top is obviously an addition (possibly covering up a logo), while the boot itself has eluded me (have looked through at least a dozen brands for anything with those design cues, no good match yet, so I’m using thrift store boots as a fallback for now). The metal toe-caps could be aftermarket.
Thx!

Thanks to sb_toyz on Instagram, providing these back views of the Black Series action figure before it’s official release.

This does complexify things a bit…the chest armor thingy is more intricate that I would’ve guessed, but okay, will adapt.

And the belts do indeed pass through a break in the coat. That’s cool. For now I’m just using a cheap costume-grade steampunk coat with some modifications. If I do a 2.0 this’ll probably demand a full do-over, not just for better movement & appearance but also it’s got some interesting asymmetry.

Originally was pushing for Fan Expo SF this coming weekend, but due to a combination of factors — delayed shipments and just some “bad motivator” days — won’t make that. It’s close…maybe if I really pushed, but nah…I am way too old for 3am cry-sewing anymore. My only disappointment is that having this out before the show would’ve given some leeway with shortcuts and mistakes. With the delays, some parts of this cosplay might require a better rebuild before a first outing.

The Black Series action figure is trickling out some places and has been incredibly helpful, would recommend this for filling in blanks when attempting a cosplay build.

Here’s some blasters and doodads:
blasters-and-doodads.jpg

It’s an 80/20 mix of 3D printing and Five Below toys. Won’t be sharing the STLs for these, not to be a jerk, but because I can 100% guarantee every one of these is “off” somehow. At some point we’re sure to get a lovely DK photo book and/or some pieces might find their way to Propstore, and we’ll get a really clear view of everything. But for now there was a lot of guesswork…and as better photos came along, I could see where I guessed really wrong, and no time for a re-do. Consider them stand-ins, I didn’t even much bother sanding layer lines.

As mentioned in an earlier post, I’d originally based the blasters on the D23 costume display, but from trailers and action figure it became apparent that the right hip blaster at D23 was a substitute, so I remade that (far right, above). Then in further trailers (and again the action figure) I see now that the left hip blaster was also substituted! Argh! Well I’m gonna run with my “wrong” blaster (“X” above) for now and replace it later.

“Rivets” on chest protector (photo of orig costume at D23) appear to be Chicago screws. Amazon assortment, ten bucks. Big relief, I always do terribly with real rivets.

boots.jpg

Still haven’t identified the original motorcycle boots, so I’m running with an off-model Goodwill find for now. A little short. The embossed logo is unfortunate, but eh, 15 foot rule. For the boot tops, miraculously found a small remnant of tan bison leather at local flea market. Regarding metal toe caps, the aftermarket type all seem to be “segmented” to form around different sizes and makes of boot. Presumably then the original boots have integrated toe caps, which might help narrow down the search. For now, a cheat: chrome paint marker. 15 foot rule again. Maybe we’re up to 20 feet now. 25?

Still have holsters and bandolier to do, and some further work on the shoulder pauldrons and mask. Oh! That reminds me though, this buckle on the original’s hip belt/holster that was driving me batty:
buckle1.jpg

Haven’t tracked this down if it’s an existing object. Personal preference, I’m just hesitant to use 3D printed parts as load-bearing elements. But, thanks to action figure detail, can see there’s a second buckle on the back of this belt. So if nothing else turns up there’s an option here to make the front buckle just a single non-functional piece, might simplify matters. In my rush, I’d already moved ahead with a “real” buckle here…and as I hadn’t found a match, made a silly easter egg of it instead, using one of those seatbelt-style buckles for now:

Fingers crossed that the show and especially this character are a delight. If he doesn’t get called a “scurvy dog” I am gonna flip this table.

I’ll shut up about this character some day…but this is not that day. Con came and went, no costume, and that’s fine, the pressure was making me “bad weird.” Work continues on it, but more rationally. And now we have the show itself to provide more details.

That thing with the belt buckle switching orientations? Turns out that’s not just a D23 Expo goof or an action figure goof…it’s seen doing this from shot to shot:
brutus-buckle-flip.jpg

Continuity error or fidget spinner buckle?

Even with the Black Series figure I’d still been stumped whether he’s wearing a frock coat (very piratical) or a waist cape. I’d guessed coat but this leaked Hasbro figure has me second-guessing again and strongly suggests waist cape:
brutus-hasbro-figure.jpg

Or maybe it’s still a coat but just easier to sculpt & mold that way.

Also there’s this neat textured panel on the left flap:
brutus-waist-cape-panel.jpg

Panel is hinted at in the Black Series action figure but not well defined. Anyway, I left it out for now. Need a better view.

Came to realize I was doing the cosplay equivalent of the software engineer’s “premature optimization” — dwelling too much on fine points before the big picture is understood. Doing it right really will benefit from more footage, 4K captures, DK and “Art of” books. Gonna carry on and wrap this up as “Knowingly Wrong Brutus™,” and then — unless the character somehow sours on me — revisit piece by piece with newer references.

Have a meme:

Here’s a few clear views of Brutus under good lighting, sourced from around the web. This was from the red carpet premiere event at Disneyland. Unless the costume goes on display somewhere, searching for photos from this event might be the best source for now.

Whomever was dressing the mannequin got the belts crossed. Correct layout can be seen on the show and the Black Series action figure. The waist cape belt should be on top for his full circumference, the hip holster belt below.

Some nice views of his right hip holster here, which had previously been a mystery.
