Sidkit Mal Gun Build Thread

I roughed it up to a satin-like finish, so it still looks like real metal. (Didn't I post a pic early on in this thread? I forget...) It's just that by starting out with gloss, you can put on a thicker coat and that kinda helps the lustre.

Did your method "kill the metallic sheen" once you had roughed up the gloss, or is it still pretty convincing?

You did post a pic, but it looked awfully glossy and I was wondering if it might have been a trick of the light or something. My current bare finish is almost completely matte, so...yeah.

Once you put the clear-coat on, did you lose the cold metal feel?

i JUST got word TODAY from my platers, that they are done plating and aging it for me...... so i should have it in a week or so....... will post pics once i get it

I've never used the 2-part-in-a-can myself but that certainly appears to be the right type. If I'm not mistaken, my paint guy, who told me about the stuff, sells that exact same brand, so it stands to reason that's the correct can. I'm remembering something about the button being at the bottom... perhaps underneath.

Oh... and the clearcoat does not take away any of the metallic coolness.

Is this the kind of thing you were talking about, joatrash?

It appears to be a two-part clear coat in a single aerosol can. It doesn't specify a "mix button" like you mentioned, but that's the only way I can think of having a two-part chemical process in one can, and there's only a single can in the preview shot.

Greetings all!

Here's some pics of my finished pistol, #030...

Wish I could take credit for the job, but my buddy Obishawn actually did the work for me. We've got some questions for you experts though... see, here's a picture of it after Comic-Con last weekend...

The topstrap and the magazine came loose pretty quickly. Yeah, I know, some will say that this is a display piece and shouldn't be carried in a holster, but if I can get it to the point where it's durable enough, it's going to be a permanent part of my costume.

So, anyone have any ideas on how to secure those a bit more reliably? OH, those little knurled knobs... those don't stay on at all, and I left them at home... any ideas about those, too?

Thanks!

thumbscrews= drill and tap and insert threaded rod.... a small set screw will work...

Top strap= i drilled a hole in mind thru the rear site and a set screw will go thru to attach it to the frame

magazine= i want my magazine to be removable so im using strong earth magnets...

the problem with thsi gun is that it relies TOO much on GLUE and GLUEING metal just doesnt work that great...... never as strong as a SCREW!

Ayup, the glue bit sucks...

Do you have pics or anything about your "mods"? I'm new to these forums, and there seems to be a ton of info to wade through...

Thanks!

check out my "brass plated sidkit" thread thats going on right now
that will be THE thread for all the updates on MY gun

Here are some pics of my Brass electroplated kit parts before and after.
As you can see the plating gave really dissapointing matt finish with nasty black spots on it.
However, with a bit of brass wire brush dremeling - the shiny is revealed!

So i'll be going over the parts with that and maybe a light 1200grit sanding and then good old Brasso. Once that is done I shall try BC's Plumb Brown solution to see how close I can get to the original finish.

sidewinder!!! you copy cat!!! lol lol

im, of course, joking, because your gun looks really good! careful polishing it too much. also my plater told me that chemical oxidizers will REMOVE the brass plating, so be careful there too...

i know what you mean about "too much" ..... it wasnt even funny how a simple $250 kit because a $600 kit!

I'm getting a sample piece tested with brass plating. If it works out good then I'll be looking for a handful of other UK members to get in on this as this will drastically reduce the price! PM me if you want me to keep you in mind.
