Sculpting Two Bios

Jason....this has been a very surprising thread for me.....I had NO idea that you sculpted.....let alone so feking well!!
IMHO Bios are much less forgiving to sculpt than heads as symetry has to be spot on etc.....and I have to say that you've done amazingly great........and taking the sculpt away with you ....fekin classic lol!
Very much looking forward to seeing how this turns out....aswel as Robs design.....and when your done with those.....I'd like to see a head as I now have EVERY confidence that you will be able to produce something breath taking if these bios are anything to go by......lets face it....you have had enough stuff in your collection for you to gander at in person from every conceavable angle.......there's not too many others in this world as familiar with the character than you.

Very well fekin done that man!

Thank you for the kind words...that's what drives me and rejuvenates my desire to create when I may not feel like it - which has been the case over the past week.

The more I look at the P1 Stunt from George, the more I see the flaws and lack of symmetry. BUT - I'm not saying that as a bad thing - not at all. However, it makes sculpting it a bitch! Take the fins for example: the ones on the Stunt are very different in shape and angle. So when I'm sculpting it I want there to be symmetry. Therein lies my problem! The jawline on the left is VERY different than the right side. So sculpting it, should I keep that inconsistency? This may not have been the greatest Bio to start on because of how hard it is to get it looking "right" when "right" is really all in the eyes of the beholder.

Georges P1 Stunt is one helluva holy grail despite all its "flaws" but at the same time those flaws are what make it so freaking cool!

And yes when I'm done these two Bios, I fully intend on using all the clay to sculpt a head. The great thing is that I draw a lot of inspiration from everyone's amazing work I see right here on the Lair. Both Rob and Lee's sculpting gave me the courage to buy clay and try it on my own. And skunk - after seeing the work you did on the last head - it's given me the desire to make my own head.

I have you guys to thank for getting me where I am today ;)

I still argue that the outside shape of the shroud is round, whereas the inside edge is triangle. After going frame by frame through one of the behind the scenes vids for hours, I am convinced that it is round. Or my eyes blurred out. One of the two. Plus, the round just feels "right" to me. The whole bio is all these beautiful curves, natural lines. I just don't see a triangle "fitting" it...

You've got me thinking about it more Brad...damn you!!! I am right back to where i was when I was re-thinking it last year! I too went through the movie in slow mo, and played the Bio scenes over and over for a good 2 hours...I can't convince myself that it's round or triangle in shape because the Bio changes from shot to shot. Let alone the damn laser - it's more depressed into the Bio in some shots and in others it looks like it's sticking out a good 2-3 inches!! Yes I know that's due to the laser being embedded in the mask, but it's not cool for consistency!

Oh well...In this case I'm going with a bit of the triangle shape and then I'm running the upper leading edge along a little further. Still not a 100% that this is the final look, but at least I'm still working on it.

Thanks for the advice Gene! Scott is sending me some kidneys so I can start smoothing as soon as they get here...looking forward to it!

I think I've got the shroud the way I want it to look. Please don't ask how many times I've reshaped it! I wanted to give the shroud's edge a sharp line along the side and as it flows to the back to the rim:

Next up: air hose assembly on left temple and single air hose on left cheek

Wow now that is just sexy looking,I'm with hippie on getting my hands on this sculpt ;-)

Oh btw how many times did you reshape it ';,,;'
Lol....

the shroud is what's going to really set yours apart from the many other P1s. i like it. i like the top edge and how it shoots forward like that.

Thanks for all the comments. And yea Daman, I wanted this to look somewhat different and I didn't want to mess with the overall shape of the Bio, so I figured the shroud would be the best way to make it my own. ;)

what's nice is it still totally flows with the eye. in profile the shroud and the eye line up very nicely. it's quite aesthetically pleasing.

really nice work on that J. you guys with your big attention span and patience make me want to get better.

Thanks Daman! I spent some time last night smoothing it - what a bitch! I asked Steve Wang what method he would recommend and this is what he told me:

Use a metal kidney shaped scraper and scrape it lightly over and over until you get rid of the lumps. I also use a cotton cloth with alcohol or the hard comb-like side of velcro with alcohol to sand and refine the surface once the major lumps are gone. When that's done, you can then use your fingers and alcohol to finish the final smoothing. Keep in mind, it will never be sandpaper perfect. Most people mold it, cast a fiberglass copy and then sand it smooth and then remold that.

I don't have a metal kidney tool just yet, so I'm sticking with alcohol and cotton pads which is OK, but not perfect. The perfectionist in me may one day take a molded cast and take sandpaper to it just to get it as smooth as possible.
