Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

What kind of craft delivered the fireworks on Endor during the victory celebration?
I would say that those flew in atmosphere - not just hugging the ground, taking off or doing a "controlled descent" like NASA's Space Shuttle.
In my memory those were X-wings, but I might be mistaken.

Good point... but, I find it kinda hard to tell - they might just be reentering the atmosphere.

Well, to point out the obvious, there were TIEs chasing the MF in the atmosphere of Bespin. I fail to see this as an issue at all.
I mentioned that in my first post about this here.

There's a scene in the first transformers movie where Mr. Army tells Spike to take the allspark to an abandoned tower in the middle of the city. If he can get to the top of the tower a helicopter will extract him.

The thing is, they were standing in a secret underground army facility in the middle of the dessert.

When you think about the "plan", there was no reason to do any of it except that a populated city is far more interesting for a destructive fight scene than the dessert.

And that is why Finn told Rey to stay close to the ground. It's why JJ can't do "space" in space movies.

yeah... OK.

I guess you won't be told, will you?

By that reasoning the Space Shuttle is capable of atmospheric flight :D In the original ANH, we see them zipping from Yavin 4 into space - basically powering their way through the atmosphere and gravity (not unlike the Shuttle on her boosters). The SE changed that a bit and added some basic movement - but, even that was more akin to some very basic repulsor like and not so much actual flight.

Um... The space shuttle IS capable of atmospheric flight. What do you think they do to land it?

My nephew pointed out that there are several points in the trailer that look exactly like Malachor V from KOTOR2. When the X-Wings (with lights on) are flying through it, the terrain is exactly the same, it has lightning, etc. Maybe just a coincidence. They kind of put it back into canon in the Rebels show by renaming it Malachor, but this version matches the game version exactly.
SPOILER if you haven't played it, but watch at 3:03 til the ship crashes to see it:

That's something that bugged me in TFA and now again in Rogue One... X-Wings in atmosphere. In the OT we didn't have this - on Hoth, the Rebels had to use Snow Speeders and the Imperial Army used no air combat. I'm sure there could be a tremendous amount of reasons that could be created why X-Wings or TIE Fighters were not used... but, the most basic reasoning was that they were not made or meant for atmospheric flight. (This would also mean that the Death Star trenches did not have gravity or atmosphere... which, isn't real clear).

JJ is far from the first to have Ties and X-Wings flying in planetary atmospheres. I know people bitch when the EU is cited, but the fact of the matter is that the EU was considered canon by Lucas for many years before Disney came along.

Disney can make up whatever they want, but in the old EU, X-Wings were superior in atmosphere because they have wings. The TIEs were not as maneuverable because of the large wings which would presumably act like giant air brakes when turning. The TIEs would probably rely mostly on repulsorlifts for maneuvering. Also I think the reason they didn't use X-Wings in ESB is because the X-Wings were there to escort their ships out. They didn't want to risk them, though I think they would have easily taken down the AT-ATs.

The EU was never canon, ever. Lucasfilm always said it could be overwritten by Lucas if he ever crossed into those areas. The only things that were canon were the movies and The Clone Wars series. Lucas could make something canon if he used it (like Coruscant, double bladed lightsabers, Aayla Secura, the Juggernaut aka *holds puke in* Turbo Tank, etc.).

Er, if I remember correctly large ships could not get through due to the shield generator. Once the shield generator was destroyed Vader is told "You can start your landing" so it seems those ships COULD come down in the OT.

I assumed his landing was in a shuttle or landing craft. If AT-ATs could penetrate the shield, why not ISDs?

Let's identify the members in the Squad:

1. Prince Oberyn Martell aka Red Viper.
Trying real hard to impress & pickup our main female lead with "I've been a Rebellion recruiter for a long time".

2. Bridget Jones.
Likes to rebel. Has Daddy issues. Gets threatened by some Kelsey Grammer looking Rebel leader.

3. Ip Man.
Carries a Magic Stick.

4. The Last Samurai aka the other Asian Guy.
Speaks softly. Has a BFG.

5. Imperial Cargo Pilot-Traitor.
Just collecting a paycheck as a cog in the Machine.

6. Other three guys in background.
The Rock says It doesn't matter who they are. Like the Star Trek crew in red-dead man walking.

Love that last table pic. Somebody knows them in real life. Gotta lighten this thread up.

OK......its nerd time

"The repulsorlift or repulsorlift engine, often referred to simply as a repulsor, was an anti-gravity technology capable of levitating an object. It was created from subnuclear "knots" of space-time made by enormous unmanned power refineries encompassing black holes. Repulsorlifts were widely used, and were included on virtually every type of vehicle."

J

thats the engine by victor "straussburger"?? (thats how his last name sounded on the documentary i watched) if it is, it was a very interesting device, and a very cool story behind it. well jewish slaves working to death to house the project isn't cool. but the whole underground top secret weapons was very interesting

How did Han Solo walk after being in carbonite for a year? What do people on Tattoine eat? Didn't DS2 screw up Endor's gravity?...You could spend the rest of your life picking apart the "science" of Star Wars but why? None of it makes ANY sense. Single ecosystem planets? The Force? SOUND IN SPACE? After 40 years a SD in atmosphere is REALLY the first hang up some of you are experiencing?!

Not a hang up for me at all.
Trivial fan nit picking griping yes. ;)

Honestly this may very well be the SW I've been waiting for since 1983.

You forget Megatron and Starscream were attacking the base with other Decepticons on the way, so they moved the Allspark to the city to keep it hidden until they could extract it. It's quite simple..

There was no sense to their plan.

Extract to where? They never said. And those extraction helicopters were blown out of the sky by star scream anyway.

The only reason they came up with that plan was because emotionally, big city destruction makes us relate it to 9/11.

That's why we keep seeing mass destruction in all of these movies. They are trying to conjure up feelings from that day.

There were big destruction porn movies looooooooooooooooooooong before 9/11.

Absolutely. Independence day and Titanic were really the Genesis of the modern day version.

Bit after 9/11 it became so much more relatable. Even Galactica was often referred to as an "echo" of the feelings of 9/11. Personally, I think that's why so many of these movies use mass destruction on an impersonal level, rather than a personal one. They use a sense of scale to show us how insignificant we all are.

As for transformers, there was no reason the Autobots would chose a densely packed city to fight the deceptions over a military compound in the desert....except that it's more interesting to the film.
