Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Post-release)

Diversity is all well and fine. but FORCED diversity is the issue I have.

for instance, Kathleen Kennedy searching for a woman director JUST TO HAVE A WOMAN DIRECTOR, even if she's not right for the role.
Saying 'Like this movie BECAUSE of how diverse it is, not cause it's good or anything!' is just weird.....using diversity as a selling point rather than the characters as PEOPLE is also weird.

and then saying males don't matter as much anymore, that's also sitting wrong with me. because of statements like that, it's made me less excited for new star wars if these are the kind of people in charge.

and it's a shame. I love seeing people from different parts of the world on screen (I ESPECIALLY hate it when tv shows use forced subtitles for people from england and Ireland and Scotland,... perfectly understandable, you idiots!). but forcing the issue on it, and saying white people are basically evil isn't the way to go. The Comments from the R1 writers where especially bizarre...

but, again, not to delve too far into banned site topics like this..mods, feel free to edit.

feel free to tear apart in typical internet fashion :) if the mods allow it to stay up :)
This post may have nothing to do with star wars, but I feel this is the best response to your comment

yep, i understand all that.

and i'm not against it.
but just something about how it's being done here doesn't feel right.
you don't want to earn your place in hollywood because the movie you're in needs to gain entry into china by hiring you. you want to gain it cause you where right for the part and people respect your craft.

sometimes i wish i didn't delve so much into these movies....it kind of takes the fun out of it. maybe that should be a resolution for 2017. don't research, don't learn. don't follow. just go in with a blank slate and see if the reaction is still the same.

What "The blockee" fails to see is that if an effort isn't made to expand diversity in films, it just won't happen. Some of it is due to being too lazy to go against the status quo... some of it is due to fear of being labeled as pandering... and then there's just plain "I don't want to see diversity".

When Mad Max came out, a near FLAWLESS film, I couldn't believe the anti-women push back that came with it. "How DARE they have Max take orders from a WOMAN"

I think the diversity in this film was maybe the one thing I loved. I loved that people of Indian descent were stoked to see themselves portrayed as good guys, rather than the bad guys. It didn't take me out of the flick for a moment.

And Star Wars bad guys have ALWAYS been white... they were heavily influenced by Nazis... The WORLD feared them.

And boo hoo the empire were all white bad guys... the whitest guy in the Galaxy saved the day!...

As an aside, forget the human diversity, I actually would have liked to see a character or two in the core Rogue One group BE an ALIEN... like Chewbacca... (not a Wookie... but just not human) instead just a core group of humans... in a galaxy of crazy possibilities

I definitely want more alien main characters.

And let's have some real gender diversity. Smurfette is such a token gesture.

Yeah they really backed themselves into a corner on that one... (Smurfs)

Since they are asexual, there are never female smurfs unless they MAKE them with magic.

OR... a stork brings a FEMALE smurf on a blue moon changing everything...

"Nature finds a way"

Hey, Sony, I just figured out the plot to your next flick... call me!

Back on topic...

That Jyn Erso eh? Cute, amiright?

feel free to hate me for whatever reason you feel justified. i'm used to it by now :).

anyway...

I want to get to know these characters as people. naturally. not because the studio is saying 'look, we hired this guy cause he's mexican. we hired this guy cause he's asian....we're progressive!'

If you have to force the issue to give people a chance, perfectly fine..but don't make it a selling point.
I don't care if a male or female is directing wonder woman. I don't care if they are white, black, asian, or a smurf. just make it good.

just the way some of these statements i see are reminding me of how feigbusters came about. don't like the movie? you must then there fore hate women and must spit on them as they walk by. If the idea had come naturally, I would have given that movie much more of a chance if the film makers had just let the thing unfold naturally, rather than be combative about it.

have fun destroying this one ;o).

I didn't like Rogue One and while people have argued with me, no one has accused me of hating women or diversity.

I think the problem is when you say you didn't like the movie, and the reason being was 'look, we hired this guy cause he's mexican. we hired this guy cause he's asian....we're progressive!'

You hate women.
You hate diversity.

Have a nice day. :lol

Here comes Rutty, he's a berserker....

damnit ....I was having a perfectly nice day being grumpy. then your laughy guy put me in a good mood. now i'm miserable.

what the hell are we even talking about now? Smurfs?

Gargamel is a bitch.

the Mon Calamari fleets are actually bits of Mon Calamari cities.

:facepalm So apparently someone at Lucasfilm said "You know how in the old EU the Mon Cal ships were converted cruise liners that had weapons, armor, and shields added? Well I've got a better idea. They're actually parts of buildings, shot into space! Briliant!" So was the B team working on that book? Oh and Death Troopers are zombies? C'mon! WTH is going on over there?

Arrogance and ignorance go hand in hand.

I can't believe the USA won its independence. That was so forced.

I can't believe they freed the slaves. That was so forced.

I can't believe they gave women the right to vote. That was so forced.

I can't believe there was a Civil Rights movement. That was so forced.

Some people are simply afraid things that are different. They fear change and the harbor hate - they make excuses and hide their heads in the sand. The make these lame excuses that it's "forced" or they making 'this' character 'that way' to be diverse. Open up your eyes - the world is different. Some celebrate those differences while others just cower in fear and cover it up.

Nope, I don't hate you, Neil.

I'm just all out of sympathy for white guys whining about how the mean ol` SJWs are taking away all their safe spaces and testosterone riddled white guys are no longer the special snowflakes that everyone wants to root for.

again, if that's what you want to think... feel free.

I debated even bringing it up cause I knew people would tear it to shreds.
I just wanted to bring up the angle of how some websites and the people behind lucasfilm are promoting this film...and i did.

I can see why the mods ban more emotional topics on here.

Oh, and your comment about Kathleen Kennedy seeking out women directors just because they have ovaries? The reality is exactly the opposite:

Kathleen Kennedy Doesn’t Think There’s a Woman Director Ready for “Star Wars”[/h]

Well cmon, most people that identify as a "SJW" are insufferable. Kind of like vegans. Im not saying Im a testosterone riddled white guy( I do love women, hetero male here), but I kind of find it ironic that youre using SJW/college terms that the "testosterone riddled white guys" use to make fun of SJW's. Personally, I wasnt a big fan of Rogue One, and it wasnt because of diversity by any means. I just thought it was boring, basically everything NeoRutty said. Like I mentioned before, the only thing that took me out of the movie was Donnie Yens character. Other than that, I just wasnt impressed. I kind of get what Neil is saying, and I kind of get what youre saying Firesprite, but youre both at opposite ends of the spectrum. Its just strikes me as kind of funny, hardcore christians come to mind. They always preach "dont judge unless ye be judged" but I have found that they are the judgiest people on the planet. This kind of reminds me of that. Just my two cents. Im sure someone will come out and give me **** for it like someone did in another thread, but whatever :lol

Hey, now - don't let facts get in the way of someone else's BS insecurities and prejudices. I found a similar article, but opted to not post it because it's not going to change a bigot's mind.
Your passive/agressiveness is just as legendary as NeilT's negativity. What you say is so condescending, its almost palpable. :lol

Glad you picked up on that Snikt. It was intentional. While, yes, there are many who self-identify as SJW who are insufferable twits, it seems like a lot of people use the label to indicate anyone who doesn't subscribe to their particular way of thinking. I'm more than happy to listen to dissenting opinions when there is more behind them than "Oh my god, I feel threatened because the lead doesn't look like me anymore!" I've tried being nice about this, but I'm tired of the hyperbole being passed off as fact and unlike some, I will take the time to find actual support for my counters.

If anyone doesn't like it or feels like their poor delicate sensibilities are hurt by it, as Neil has so helpfully pointed out multiple times... the block function works just fine.
