Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Post-release)

Without scrolling 12 pages, has any mention of the original ANH Lucas cut footage being used? There were alternate angles and footage of Tarkin on the Death Star. After Lucas' first cut of the film, if memory serves, was deemed not acceptable a few others were brought in to recut ANH to what we know. Ive seen stills and snips of alternate angles but am not certain if anyone has ever seen that cut since day one.

Yep the X-Wing assault report has been posted a few times,....not really any details of the Tarkin footage used,.....I did see a Twitter article saying we will have behind the scenes & making of stuff in January,....they want to keep the magic going for a while before they show us how they did it

I don't think any ANH Tarkin footage was re-purposed for R1 like they did for Red and Blue Leaders.
,....just the footage they used to get a good likeness,.....they apparently used footage from Peter Cushing's back catalogue of other films also

I did not read Catalyst (mostly because I dislike Chuck Wendig’s writing, and it irks me that he’s been handed most of the books surrounding the new movies so far), and I didn’t feel that we needed any more backstory for Jyn and her parents.
Over the course of the movie, we got what we needed out of that:

  • Galen was an Imperial officer.
  • Galen left/retired, likely at the urging of his wife.
  • Krennick blamed for the loss of a valuable asset (hence why he was so “pleased” to see Lyra alive).
If they’d tried to shoehorn in much more than they did, it would have bogged down the story.

Chuck didn't write it. It was written by James Luceno who's written some of the better sw novels.

lLiteraaly every
person that came into contact with information about the plans or the plans themselves dies in the film. It a relay race where each handoff results in the death of the person doing the handing!

Yeah thats why Leia got the " credit " in ANH she was the only one still alive . and that took a rescue mission and a whole separate movie all its own .

Neither did I......I don't need & shouldnt need to read a book to understand a movie or watch a kids cartoon.

I just watched the movie & I understood the characters,....I don't know,....maybe because I'm a dad,....I felt more connection to Jyn than Rey......The hologram message & the goodbye on the platform were hearbreaking

Saw needed air from a respirator,....along with his cumbersome walk,....I don't think he'd be able to run & escape.......The RLM must have been out on a geg on their trip to the cinema

I can't remember if they showed it in the final cut, but Saw has a mechanical leg in the trailers.

You didn't have to read the books or watch the toon to understand, I sure as heck didn't and I could!

I agree, they must have been a lot more than half in the bag when they watched R1.

Uh oh another inconsistency ANH scrawl says Leia "races home aboard her starship "
But her mission was to retrieve obi wan . that's what Bale Organa says in R1 and Leia herself in the message to obi wan .

Shame, franchise ruined oh well it was a good run .

Yeah Redlettermedia has made a point that they don't read the books and novels, and you SHOULDN'T to understand what's driving the plot of a movie.

I didn't even know there WAS a book called Catalyst, and I frequent this site...
@Snikt - yeah, I have a problem slighting the Vader appearance... as little sense as it would make to someone who only saw this movie and no other, I LOVED the Vader slaughter. Those Rebels were crapping their pants trying to get away... and not just get away, but still pass on the plans. Gave a lot of weight to the actual plans.

Though the discussion with Vader and Leia is now a little off...

"You weren't on any mercy mission this time. Several transmissions were beamed to this ship by rebel spies. I want to know-"

"I can swear on a Jedi bible that there were not several transmissions beamed to this ship..."

"Give me a break with semantics... they were beamed to a ship that THIS ship was docked to before I cut up a bunch of dudes hot-potatoing a flash drive"

I haven't watched the Redletter review yet... will check it out tonight. But I'm guessing Mike won't like it. He likes fun Star Wars with stand out characters...
As I mentioned before the dialogue makes no sense. It's like she was pulled over by the cops and then peeled off before he got to the car.

And then when he catches her ten minutes later, she acted like nothing happened.

"I'm on a diplomatic mission to alderaan"

"B*tch, please. I was touching your ship ten minutes ago at the battle of scaref"

I loved Bail's line.. "I have someone in mind... I trust her with my life."

Yeeeahhhhh..... that didn't work out so well.

Also, I noticed it the first time, but I'm curious about one of the soldiers who took Bodhi to Saw - he was wearing a black biker scout helmet, which would imply storm commandos are really a thing.

Is there any information on this scout? I have exhausted my google-fu on it. Also, the visual guide and art book for R1 have no pictures of it.

Okay, just now got back from the theater. I haven't read this thread, so I'll probably be echoing what other people have said, but here goes: I really really loved it. Definitely a better story then TFA, obviously that makes sense since TFA was more character driven, and RO is more story driven. That's not to say the characters from RO weren't good, they were actually quite interesting. I really liked Bodhi, he was one of my favorites, he felt very real in how his character acted. Vader was amazing, his fight scene was very well played. I also got a very clone wars Anakin vibe from him in the scene with krennic. Also was it me, or did anyone else think his fortress looked like it was inspired by the castle in that story arch from the CW, the weird sort of star trekish one with the force beings? And I also thought tarkin and Leia were very good efforts. Tarkin was very well done, it just sort of messed with your eyes when he faced the camera dead on.
Anyway,I'll skip a lot of gushing on about it, cause I'm sure that's already been done. At least I hope it has.
I am so happy that they embraced the prequels. The OT and the PT have always been pretty seperated in my mind, but this merged them very very well.

I can't remember if they showed it in the final cut, but Saw has a mechanical leg in the trailers.

Both of his legs are mechanical.

Eh, maybe I'll give it a read when the price comes down a little. The point stands, however: You don't HAVE to have read the book to get what you need out of the little bit of backstory that was shown. :)

No one should ever make a movie that has required reading before you watch it

It doesn't. The books can add depth and expanded development if you want to go there.

Everything you need to know is in the movie. My 9 and 11 year old could figure it out. Adults think too hard about these things.

The rebel dude painted it so his friends wouldn't shoot him In the face ?

I think someone in this thread was asking about the Geonosis - spoiler about them from the Rogue One visual dictionary

Confirmed the planet was sterilized and the population killed to keep the DS a secret

Kinda sorta....
The first assembly, which is just the first rough go at putting it all together before analyzing subtleties and deciding what isn't needed, was done in England, mostly on only general instructions from Lucas while he was still shooting and without his direct involvement. Lucas didn't like the guy's approach, and thus started over from scratch in the US with himself, Marcia Lucas, Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew.

Bits of that first assembly, in the form of a B&W workprint, have been released over the years...some on a CD-ROM in the late 90s. But only bits.

Pretty intersting. Nice to have it all in one vid. Some inconsequential stuff. Some major changes too.

Is this shot in the film? With the thick out of focus star streaks, possibly rear projected?
