Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Post-release)

I also appreciated the variant of the tie striker with the death troopers. I hadn't seen it yet and it was nice to see a bit more.

And I LOVED the republic tank as prisoner transport.

Vader at the end....that's what we wanted in the damn prequels man. That was some bad-assery there. As for it not matching up with ANH - if you want an in universe explanation - it's pretty damn easy. These guys had no clue what they were in for and it was a hot knife through butter. to the the 10th power. Obi-wan was his former master and someone he knew if he #$!#ed up, he was toast. You don't go in wild like you can against a bunch a soldier who never faced a jedi or sith or probably never even saw one. He toyed w/luke in ESB and was pretty active in ROTJ.

Still want a stand a lone vader - hunt the jedi flick, but oh well. Maybe a video game??

If you've ever trained in combat sports you know how accurate that is.

When I'm sparring with a guy I know I can beat I let fly with some of the fancier stuff. When I know I'm matched its a lot more stagnant, a real stand off, a lot more cognitive than action.

Seeing Vader in this makes the ANH duel a lot more real to me.

And yes, Vader needs a clearing up on order 66 anthology film now. I would like to see duel Vader and Obi Wan movies. Essentially stand alone films, but they cameo in each others movies, just slightly missing each other during their respective missions.

Thinking of Saw's voice. I think it was Stuckman who said that it sounded like someone had a boot on his throat.
If you think about it, that's probably not far off. Saw's obviously been through a lot since Onderon, has 2 prosthetic legs, now requires a partial exo suit and a respirator. Dude can barely breathe. He's in almost as bad shape as Vader, but without the Empire bankrolling a snazzy life support suit with the James Earl Jones voice upgrade.

I did go see for a 2nd time today and I liked it even more. I was trying to figure out why I was feeling so weird after the movie even though I enjoyed it. I think it was just that feeling of melancholy because the main crew died. I'm not a big fan of main people dying and I understand it makes the movie a bit better but still. Ugh, the feels.

For my money, it felt weird that the movie kept going for ten minutes after every single one of our viewpoint characters died. Everything with Vader and the Tantive IV incredible, but IMO it did not belong in this particular story.

piling onto the Loved It bandwagon!

The beginning felt maybe a little muddled, but they had a lot of leg work to do to get to the finale. I seriously was near tears I was enjoying the end so much. The star destroyers slicing through each other... Vader's staid yet vicious light saber work, Leia's cameo, and smash cut to the theme... When I got home, I watched a new hope, and the transition felt utterly seamless. Never mind any nitpicky inconsistencies, the story flowed effortlessly. Scenes in the beginning of a New Hope took on new meaning, and I felt like I was watching for the first time again. I loved the tragic send off of all the main characters, passing the torch to the heroes of a New Hope, and making the sacrifices of the rebellion feel raw.

Can't wait to see it again.

After a second viewing I realized there were no plans "beamed" aboard the Tantive. A guy handed the disc over and the launched from the other ship.

Some things I loved, some things I'm less wild about, but...Polar Express Tarkin was so weirdly jarring and awful that it really tainted the movie for me. Would have vastly preferred a recasting. Leia looked borderline ok because her time was much more limited, I guess. But Tarkin was almost offensive. If they animate the corpse of Alec Guiness I'm out. Just creepy and perverse.

Well, the transmissions were beamed to Rattus' command ship, and the Tantive IV was docked inside that. So he's right, from a certain point of view...

I was just reading this about the Rebels Easter eggs:
http://nerdist.com/star-wars-rebels-easter-eggs-in-rogue-one/

Apparently Chopper's cameo (which I missed :( ) was done with the Rebels Recon prop. That explains the "cliffhanger" he reveals to Andi and why he was sent to the U.K. He's acting like more of a jerk because "FU, meatbags, I'm actually in a Star Wars movie!"

I loved the movie, didn't notice the music at all during the movie. Jyn's character was better than I expected based on the trailers.

I saw this movie at one of the smaller "not-really-IMAX" IMAX-branded screens...

It took about 40 minutes to settle into the movie, mainly because the 3D version is so bad. All of the 3D during speaking scenes is done with tons of added depth of field blur, so you have to keep darting your eyes around every time the camera changes, hoping to find the one non-blurry section of the screen that they want you to look at. Super tiring. Can't wait to see this again in 2D.

This is what I felt like I was looking at for half the movie in 3D:

Well it is official... It is impossible to make a Star Wars film that every fan will love. Give 'me a darker toned, more adult story, and people will complain that it should be more kid friendly... Use technology to bring back old characters so the film makes sense in the timeline, and people complain that it is too creepy and weird... To each their own I guess.

For me...Rogue One was awesome. It worked and worked well... I loved the story. I loved the shadowy nature of Cassian. I loved the fact that we got a Star Wars film with no Jedi and/or lightsaber battles. I loved the callbacks and fan service...(even Red Leader and Gold Leader)...could not believe that they resurrected a digital Tarkin so convincingly. I thought that was great!

The only real surprise for me was that I didn't exactly LOVE the score... And I usually like Giachinno'a stuff. I missed John Williams here, especially in the climactic scenes at the end. I just think he would have developed something more mournful and moving to highlight the sacrifices we were witnessing on screen.

Having said that, I've seen it twice, and will definitely see it again before the weekend is out. For the first film outside the "saga" films, this was a great step into a new larger world.

Were there any wipes in this movie?

Ugh, the whole thing felt so bland and obvious. The more I think about it the more tedious it seems. Crap score, crap editing, dumb Easter eggs (Evazon and Baba? So, so lame). Nostalgia is the new porn, playing on emotional needs to turn a buck. Edwards made such a cool, HUMAN movie with Monsters, but Godzilla and Rogue One were just dull. I can't wrap my head around why anyone got emotional over this. Who cares if these cardboard cutouts play dead at the end of this movie? Lucas was inspired by Kurosawa...Disney is inspired by every forgettable blockbuster in the last 25 years (though I quite enjoyed TFA and was willing to forgive it's dumber, rehashier aspects).

Anyhoo, not bananas about Rogue One.

SPOILER-SPOILER-SPOILER

I was not so happy with the movie...

The Vaderscenes are awesome...I really love the last scene where Vader kills the Rebellsoldiers!
Wow...that is the real Vader that we see here the first time.
I also love the actionscenes..great effects and brutal action.
But the movie is lot too long...too much slipslop..lots of boring scenes in the first half of the movie...no real SW-Score...for me it was not really a SW-Moviefeeling overall.
It has not enough speed for a SW-movie
No jedi...the cool asian guy with his stick had a poor dead...they had weapons that can kill a stardestroyer in seconds(that they never had later in Episode 4-6)...killed a AT-AT so fast with handguns from a starship....lots of stupid mistakes that makes the real fan crazy.

Some very valid points, if not in a very difficult formatting.

I'm not sure how this is the "real Vader." Sure, towards the end we get to see a Vader that many of us wanted to see... but, is it the "real" Darth Vader? I don't think that's question that can be answered by us.

The latter points are pretty spot on.

"Cool asian guy" is our de facto Jedi. Obi Wan needs to be the only Jedi left (for the most part) and you can't have a Star Wars movie without a Jedi... so, we'll just make Chirrut (that's his name) our de facto Jedi. Heck, we'll even make him a Guardian of the Whills.

The Star Destroyer bit looked awesome - but, you're right, if this sorta thing was possible why didn't we see it (at the very least) at the Death Star 2 Battle in RotJ? That seems to be the place something like that would happen... except, we do know the Empire was expecting that battle and were most likely sure to stay clear.

The AT-AT bit (or whatever they're called this time around), I agree with you a little more on this point. Although, I'm sure there's someone who will come up with something valid (I mean Baze hit one with a shoulder launched rocket of some sort and it didn't make a dent...)

The real answer I think might lie in the fact that this new Star Wars is more about fan service. They're here to make a return on investment - so they're willing to give the fanboys what they want to see... even if it might not completely make sense (to everyone). Sometimes it's pretty darn cool, sometimes you're left shaking your head. Ya know - like why is there a control for a satellite dish left unprotected up on a mile high skyscraper of a building? Or how Dr. Evazan and Ponda Babba show up on Jedha?

THIS WHOLE POST IS SPOILERS, BUT THIS IS A POST RELEASE THREAD RIGHT?

Loved it.

Some good some bad...

but to the trailers...I never saw them and I'm glad. It's hard to avoid Star Wars spoilers these days, but if you can do it, it's totally worth it. Going in cold is the way to go. Nothing spoiled, and it's not like the trailer was ever going to make a difference anyway. I already knew I was going to see the movie.

To the film itself:

I was surprised with Tarkin. That was totally unexpected and awesome for me. The funny thing, if I had followed the leaks and trailers I would've known he and Vader would be in it and would've said that Vader was likely to be easier since it's a guy in a suit and we've heard other, decent Vader voices before, while Tarkin would be much harder.

In the end..Tarkin was an AWESOME surprise and looked amazing. Vader on the other hand...D+ at best...passing grade yes, but not great. The first scene was just a train wreck...is physical acting just not a thing anymore? The walk was way too bouncy, the stances weren't quite right. The voice was good, but the physicality just wasn't right at all. All around he was the most disappointing part of the film for me. I felt like the actor didn't even bother to look at how Prowse walked. Also, the voice actually sounded odd to me. Like the did the effects differently. I actually thought it was a different voice actor completely until I looked it up.

I loved the ending...it was a great explanation for why we never saw any of them again. Loved all the main heroes. Jyn especially...she was downright amazing. Loved the two jedi-ish guys. Although the fight where the storm troopers took turns waiting to get beat up by the guy with the staff was just pathetic choreography.

Also...LOVED seeing Imperial Officers dress white uniform getting some screen time. If Anovos comes out with that one, they will probably be getting some of my money.

Loved that this movie basically plugged a 30 year old plot hole: that the death star WASN'T badly designed..it was intentionally sabotaged by the designer.

3PO and R2 felt forced and lame. Especially since it just made the timeline needlessly awkward. We know that Jimmy Smitts just grabbed Antilles and told him to find Leia and go find Obi-wan...we also know that they are on that ship. I guess they could still be getting packed or prepping the ship or something. Will have to watch it again. I just remember groaning a little.

But I will be watching it again.

Also I agree on the plans being beamed: it got beamed to the main ship, then handed off. Might've been smoother if Vader hadn't personally witnessed the hand off, but I can still accept it as just something he might have said once he caught up with Leia.

SPOILERS

Saw it again tonight, in 3D this time (which I knew was going to be meh). Liked it much more the second time around, for some reason it was a little more emotional. Not sure why so many Tarkin haters, like I said in my earlier post, dude has been dead for over two decades, I thought his addition was great. I don't think a look-a-like actor would have had the same impact. Same with Leia at the end, perfect ending in my opinion, wouldn't have been the same if they used a look-a-like, Definitely can't back those who are saying it's the best Star Wars ever, but it was very good. Still thought the first 45-60 minutes were a bit slow, music is sadly forgettable (I wish John Williams would have done it, the score in a Star Wars movie is like a character in itself), some real great tie-ins to the original Star Wars, the last 45-60 minutes have some incredible space scenes / aerial combat / flying shots, Darth Vader has a great scene towards the end, the droid K-2SO steals the show, was not happy with how they used Forrest Whitaker (he was under used in my opinion), good job with making you feel vested in the characters, wish they would have tied in Rebels besides the few easter eggs, would have been cool to see a live action Kanan, Ezra, etc.

The emotional aspect really hit me the second time, knowing they all died, never felt that way about any characters in the SW universe so kudos to them for pulling that connection off.

The Ben/Force theme when Bail Organa walks in? What? Sure, minutes later they refer to Obi-Wan....but that's minutes later.
Should've used Leia's theme.
