@MightyJohn, What did you do to the brace to make it so smooth?

Re: robo3687's Iron Man 2 Pep Files - 27/6 first post rewritten, RIGHT LEG in first p

fiberglass separately, and then rivet them together, making one piece slightly slotted vertically to allow bending and compression when leaning forward per rivet.
I would do it the same way but instead of rivets i would use Velcro to glue it to the under suit and place them , just as you suggested, vertically to each other to allow compression. Its easier this way.

are we talking just the abd pieces here? or round the back and sides too?

does anyone think it would majorly restrict movement if the whole file was cast as 2 solid pieces?

my idea: one solid piece for the abs, and one solid piece for the back and sides. attach the abs to the side piece with elastic and velcro. this would pull the sides in slightly for a more snug fit and would still allow movement in the elastic.

Mudding and sanding. Lots and lots of sanding. finish sanding with 220 grit.
Also, It's enamel paint so its thick (hides small blemishes), hard, smooth and very shinny.

Re: robo3687's Iron Man 2 Pep Files - 27/6 first post rewritten, RIGHT LEG in first p

I had to trim my mk6 chest brace 'cause I think it was sitting too low. I'll see later how that will work out after I get done with the abs section.

I am talking about the abs section and maybe the sides, i haven't pepped it yet so i don't know how the pieces are.

Re: robo3687's Iron Man 2 Pep Files - 27/6 first post rewritten, RIGHT LEG in first p

guys check this out. I went to another fiberglass supply store (actually 30 miles away) to pick up a gallon of EpoxAmite and 3 yards of fiberglass mat, and ended up going home with these.
4775625470_2ebd38fd38.jpg

total was $43. 1 gal. of polyester resin, 8 0z. of 30% MEK-P, gallon of lightweight filler, and 5400 sq. ft. of mat.
I was big on using the EpoxAmite before because of it's 11 min. pot life, and it was good that I mentioned it to the sales rep. Well before I didn't know that the MEK-P hardener comes in different concentration, and from what I've learned they come in either 30% (medium) and 50% (fast). Then the rep told me that if I use 1cc of the 30% MEK-P on a 2 oz. of resin, the mixture will give me the same amount of pot life as the laminating epoxy.
So I got a guarantee from the rep, and if didn't work out like what I expected, he will take the remaining back and give me credit toward the gallon of EpoxAmite. So I'll let you know how this experiment goes.

What do you mean by "mudding" (what product did you use)?

uh, probably using a bondo mix to cover imperfections, a little thicker than plain bondo.

Drywall Joint Compound. I’ve never used Bondo.
BaronVonReicher: Excuse me if I go a little over-board. I just want to cover some bases.
No matter what you use, this is the basic concept of smoothing:
PEPSANDING.jpg

With Bondo, you put on a thick coat (the yellow line) and power sand down to the blue line.
Joint Compound is softer and can’t be added that thick. It needs to be added in layers (typically 3 layers will do). It doesn’t get to full strength until it is painted/primed. So, every layer needs a primer coat.
It sounds like a pain in the butt, but:
1. No mixing required. Pre-mixed buckets from Home Depot.
2. Easy to apply. I use my finger while I sit on the couch watching tv.
3. Easy to sand. Softer before painting.
4. Easy clean-up. It’s water-based.
For small fixes I spot-spray Orange Peel Spray Texture on the area and sand away all the access. This stuff is VERY soft. If you leave too much on it will crack/peel.
I’ve been using joint Compound on costumes for 10 years. I don’t go out fighting crime or anything, so I don’t know how it would hold up in that situation, but Halloween, conventions, etc…I haven’t had any problems. And if you molding it…who cares what you use.
So…that’s just the way I do it.:lol

For those of you out there that are making faceplates or jaws that open and close, how are you attaching your hardware? Take hinges for example, are you drilling all the way through the helmet and bolting them in or are you simply gluing them to the inside?

I want to either bolt or rivet my hardware in but I dont want a bunch of bolt and/or rivet heads showing random places. Is anyone having any luck with using filler to cover up bolt heads? I'm afraid of just gluing stuff inside because of how long it will hold up

Re: robo3687's Iron Man 2 Pep Files - 27/6 first post rewritten, RIGHT LEG in first p

I'm attaching hinges and whatever before I do the filler.

hey all new to the forums here and new to iron man aromr. i've been doing scpult/molds for latex for years and now want to give this a shot. only problem is, i was recommended to use AquaResin and its not available anywhere near me. fiber glass and stuff i can get because of the auto stores around and such, but can any one recommend a suitable substitute for the resin or prahaps a link to where i can get the stuff (would rather goto homedepot or something if possible)

Thanks in advance!

Re: robo3687's Iron Man 2 Pep Files - 27/6 first post rewritten, RIGHT LEG in first p

@MightyJohn, Thanks for the info! I think I'll be using the joint compound also, since I don't want to have to worry about applying all of the Bondo before it dries up on me. Just to get it straight, you apply the compound, sand, then prime, then apply another layer? And for the smaller details, like the cheek/mouth area, you used the spot spray?

By the way, very nice helmet! Is that sharkhead's?

Yea: Apply, sand, prime, repeat. For everything (even the small details). The Orange Peel is for small imperfections like divits from air bubbles in the compound that just won't fill in (once you start using it, you'll understand).
WARNING: you have to be very careful with Orange Peel. When you spray it on, it makes everything look fantastic! BUT IT IS TOO SOFT. If you have a thick (even moderate) Layer, the paint will dent or chip if the Orange Peel doesn't crack/peel first (and sometimes it takes a day or two to crack/peel). Use it for small divits or blemishes.

Yea, its Sharkheads Awesome helmet! I couldn't handle peping the teeth, so I peped a flat surface and added the teeth, as they say in the 405th, as "floating faces" (cut out pieces of foam board). Because, it ain't a hobbie if you hate it, right?:lol

@Azurial: I don't know about AquaResin (I think it has a longer set time) but, if you'd rather go to Home Depot...Just get the resin thats there. You might as well get something thats close...Cus' you will be doing ALOT of it :)
