My backpack is done ! :love Here is some pics of my costume. What do you think ?

That really looks fantastic, especially the backpack!

Did i miss something about the shoulder pad? Last i heard it was the dollar general mat, is that something different?

Yes it's different. I don't live in USA, so I have to look for something else. But it's the same material in fact. It's a cotton mat.

Excellent :) I think, I think our generic stuff is going to match too, so 4" wide, unbleached, elasticated and of the thicker variety :)

Will be scouting this week as I start collecting materials for some workshops (trying to help local Jedi if nothing else :) Gonna get some rey queries I'm sure :) )

Okay, so the main local brand in one of the chain pharmacies is Elastoplast: https://www.elastoplast.com.au/products/crepe-bandage (note, they just don't have the 10cm/4" ones listed.)
I found some 10cm/4" wide for $NZ9.20 per roll- small pharmacy, so their overheads will affect the cost. I blanked and didn't notice if it was medium or heavy. But I have a few other places to check for a range of prices.

However, these are technically available all the time, and right next to post shops so very easy to do a quickie trip to post some flat in an envelope.

So for any Kiwi/Aussie Rey's- that's a brand that is very good with very dense crepe :) It's also possibly slightly paler than the Boots.

After not having a costume for our little one at megacon...and the high demand for one...the Disney store came through with this! 100% non screen accurate (but oh so cute) baby Rey! Couldn't get her to put the arm wraps on...which are kinda the same as the underwraps for Rey's actual wraps (Lycra) and the boots are junk foam...plan to get her some proper fake pozu boots and maybe make her a better belt and bracer...defiantly need a baby staff

Cute!
One of the things I love about Rey's costume (and Rey cosplayers) is that, because it's a practical outfit, it suits (and can be adapted to) anyone and any body-type. We've had toddler:Rey, kid:Rey, teenager:Rey, Grown-up:Rey, older-than-Daisy-Ridley:Rey and male:Rey. (Probably also gender-unspecified:Rey, because the outfit is that versatile).

And supermarkets have much cheaper options :) Just grabbed a roll of 3" (75mm) bandage for under $NZ2.50 :) So yes, NZ is now another source of bandages, probably best helping the West Coast USAians :) Current rate is $NZ1=72USc
Kiwis will be familiar with pams as a budget brand, but the quality can be pretty brilliant at times- they bulk buy basically :)

How do you go about making your outfit 'dirty' Kendra, haven't quite got it right on my daughters one, your advice would be great.:) Diane.

I've used this 3 combo of paint : Textured bistre sand paint, sand, and black acrylic.
ezrz.jpg

The first one is the best I've found ! It give a look of real sand (with grain, which is important because the character lives on a desert planet and it get everywhere :D) I applied it randomly on the wrap dress, giving it some darker and lighter part. I've even apply this paint on my goggles (with a brush) and almost eveywhere else on my costume (even on the staff). The result is spot on !
But you have to be careful while using it, and be sure to use spray it quickly from a certain distance (not too close, because it can add too much paint and it dry quickly, so then your fabric will be thick).

For the two other paints I used it on specific place. The sand has a brown/orange/yellowhish color (depending on the light), so I put it on the bottom of the wrap dress, where it has to look like the fabric is often in contact with the floor. I've add some black acrylic paint too, diluted in water (one drop of paint is enough and mix it well enough before using it, to not put black stain on the fabric). I scrubbed it with a sponge on the edge and let some drops of water fall on top to create natural mark. I then scrubbed it (carefully) again on the all wrap dress, following the fold of the fabric. I'm not fishished yet, it's still in process.

I did. others have used the Petzls but ultimately these are pretty good if you weather them some.

here's mine

Hello, everyone! I specifically signed up to get some help with my own costume build. I have trolled the first 60 pages. Unfortunately I don't have the time to keep reading or time to make a screen accurate costume at the moment (I'm aiming for Halloween for that one). I have basic, I mean BASIC, sewing and fabric knowledge so any help would be greatly appreciated. I have questions concerning the wrap. I would like to see if JoAnn's has fabric I can use first (I have until the 20th of July to get this thing together). Any fabric suggestions? Or anywhere else I'll also look into like Dharma? Also, I understand from past postings that you can cut your piece of fabric in half and they are hand-sewn together to make the wrap. I am 5' 5" so I wondering how much yardage I need. I would want an extra half yard for dye testing. Also, the gathering issue. Is this done with ironing?

Joann has fabric that will work fine. The cotton gauze. It's on here somewhere, but yeah...this thread is insane and it's hard to find stuff. I think it was just called "cotton gauze." It has a bit of a crinkle to it right off the board, so I didn't worry about gathering it, but you can gather it with your stitching at the shoulders if you want to. The fabric I used comes in white, a cream "papyrus", and a more truly tan color. I tried the papyrus at first and didn't like it. I then used the white and dyed it with taupe RIT and then used tan spraypaint at a distance to weather it/give it a more tan look rather than more grey. The color is hard to match, but you can get close.

As for length, this depends on how accurate you want to be. I used two yards for my first wrap. It's enough, but you'll have two seams in the wrap and one will likely show somewhere on your body (though it can be hidden under the belt or behind you if you try), whereas Rey only has one at the left knee on screen. So, I used three yards for the next wrap and had some extra for dye testing. I'm 5'7", so I bet three yard will do you well.

Good luck! No, that's not right...what is that phrase again? Oh, that's it. May the Force be with you.

Hi Kendra, thanks so much for your advice, will start looking for similar paint/spray here :) I must admit I do feel quite nervous about doing the weathering, worried that I might mess it up completely, will have to practice on a sample piece of material first to give myself some confidence! Best wishes, Diane.

All The info on the Joann fabric is at
https://emeraldb.com/2016/01/12/star-wars-rey-costume-part-1-wrap-dress/

If you go to the cosplay section there are other posts about the Rey costume.

Since that post i did another using the lighter "papyrus" color and dyed it with a combination of gray and taupe, about 1/8 oz gray and 1/4 oz taupe in 5 qts water. Then leave in for about 3-5 minutes....I'll try to put up a pic of that version later.

A couple yards will be enough if you do the 11" wide strips like we did, but it's cheap so you might just want to get extra if you want it wider or for testing.

11 inches isn't near wide enough though for the wrap dress, what with the gathering needed at the shoulders. 18-24 inches is much better, depending on your shoulder width....especially if you end up using the Jo Ann cotton gauze, which doesnt build that much bulk when gathered.
