Rey - Star Wars: The Force Awakens Build (open for everyone!)

This is such a dumb thing to obsess over, but it's bugging me!

I want you to know that in the most loving way, I am so amused at how I would NEVER think this much about leg wrappings but simultaneously admire your commitment to detail and that's why I consider you a better cosplayer!!!

Never apologize for detail. The RPF is definitely the place for this discussion!

My guess is it's one long strip. It is in half at the knee, but with one length twice as long as the other side. They criss cross down (blue/green), then only the longer side wraps back up (red). They all look like raw edge; the one that you don't think is folded/rolled looks like it might be folded over like double-fold bias tape that's been ironed out flat, so both sides have a fold edge but it's only two layers thick at any point (does that make any sense at all?) (I might also totally misunderstand what you're referring to with the unfinished edge question!)

Nervous to post here... long time lurker as I made my Rey cosplay. Everything is sewn myself except for the shorts, which I stumbled across on clearance at ShopKo. Hand dyed each piece, built the staff by hand from pieces found at Home Depot. This is mostly to wear to my work on Halloween (photography store) and my husband's work is also showing the latest movie in their huge 14,000 seat employee theater. So excited to debut! Thank you to everyone who posted their advice here, it was very helpful!

I'd be done with my pants, but instead I've been agonizing over how to do the damn leg wraps that she never even wears down... :facepalm This is such a dumb thing to obsess over, but it's bugging me!

There may be more info on this in the thread, but I don't remember seeing much about the wraps and couldn't find much doing a quick search. So after talking this through with a fellow Rey, this is what we've figured out. There seem to be THREE wraps on each leg. My cuff is 6" wide, folded in half to 3", and it's got a 15" extension (which may need to be shortened) - I was planning on splitting this extension down the middle so there are two 3" wide strips. Then, the third strip will be sewn onto the other side of the cuff, but only at the edges, so that it forms a loop for the other two wraps to go through.

We're pretty sure this is how they work, though what has us baffled is how the loop side of the 3rd strip is finished - there doesn't seem to be any kind of stitching, but it's not a raw edge, either. Nor do we think the fabric is folded, because that'd make the 3rd strip way too thick compared to the other two.

It's such a minor detail, I know. We're crazy. I may just end up topstitching it - it's not like anyone is actually going to notice it, and I'll probably wear the wraps up 99% of the time anyway.

It never occurred to me that there might be THREE ties!
To be honest, I thought it looked like two based on the visual dictionary pictures. On my mockup I made two ties and finished them as tubes. I wonder how the raw edges of the silk would hold up, though.

I mean, we could be wrong, but to my eye it definitely looks like there are 3 distinct wraps going around the leg, or as Detenten suggested, it could possibly be two wraps, one of which is super long and actually goes back up the leg. I ended up doing 3, and it's kind of tricky to wrap the damn things. 3 is definitely a weird number, but having one super long strap also seems odd to me. *shrug*

As for the wrap edges, you can see in the exhibit photos (like this one) that they're finished - I used an overlock stitch on mine.

Nervous nothing! Your costume and staff look great! Congrats

Should I redo these strap mounts?? They were dark brown leather but decided to weather but not sure if I went too far with sanding. After looking at more reference pics there seems to be more of the leather shine. Thoughts? NOTE: This is a ~3/4 sized staff for my 5 year old.

Maybe a little, but it's a matter of opinion.
If you're really worried I would try a little neatsfoot oil on an inconspicuous spot and see how you like it. Either that, or you could weather everything else on the staff to match the holders. If everything matches it won't really stand out. The final decision comes down to how YOU like it, though.

I like the staff a lot. Did you use the leftover fabric from the shirt?

Pants are done! Minus weathering, of course. Generally happy with them, but not sure I'll wear the wraps down much if ever. After all that time figuring them out, haha.

(Apologies for the crap photo - living in a temp house that's kind of a mess while our new house is getting built!)

Here's a close-up of what I did with the cuffs/wraps:

The two ties on the left are extensions of the right side of the cuff, which is cut down the middle to form the two ties. The tie on the right is a separate strip sewn onto the left side of the cuff, edges only, so the other two ties can go through the pocket it creates. Is this accurate? No idea, but it seems pretty close based on the photos I posted previously. Regardless, it works!

Here's another shot:

I think 3" might be a bit wide for the ties, but I'll probably just crease them or twist them more, if I ever do decide to wear them down.

Thanks for your constructive criticism and compliments. Yeah I feel I went a little overboard as well the more I look at it. I think I'll just make a new set as I have a lot of extra material.

As for the wraps, I'm trying to do this build as cheap as possible with stuff laying around the house when possible. I used an old white t-shirt ripped/cut up in strips. Then dipped the scrips in leftover coffee. Then I used white cloth hockey tape to wrap the ends and center. Used acrylic paint to color the white hockey tape.

Maybe I'll just add a little more weathering to the staff itself as you suggested after reviewing these caps:

I added a lot of weathering with black and white acrylics to mine. I'll get some pictures up a little later.

How well do they stay down when you walk?

Can someone please help me with this wrap dress, I have literally tested so many dye mixtures. Wasted so much money on the dye. Have had no luck :(

I did the 8 table spoons of tan 5 table spoons of taupe of rit dye..... how long do you guys leave the fabric in that formula.

i stirred it and water amount was 3 gallons of hot water. Any tips? Thanks

Galacticat - *happy sigh* Your obsession with the structure of the pant wraps make me smile. (Also, I may have missed this, but what fabric did you use for your pants? They look darn near perfect!)

Ryouko - Welcome Sister Rey! Your costume looks great! <3

i believe you are using too much. Our latest formula is something like 1/8 oz rit pearl grey, 1/4 oz rit taupe and 5 quarts of water. With a soak time of around 3-5 minutes.

So....I have been lurking around here for a few months now and finally decided to post my progress. I do own the screen accurate Po-Zu boots and they are absolutely fantastic. I am planning on dusting them up a little bit with some sand and powder so they don't look so new.

But to start, here is my staff build. Super proud of it and I wish I could take it everywhere with me...the people at my Home Depot think I'm nuts anyway. Only thing I am missing in these photos is the sling (which is currently drying from being weathered).

IMG_0001.JPGIMG_0010.JPGIMG_0009.JPGIMG_0008.JPGIMG_0006.JPGIMG_0005.JPGIMG_0004.JPGIMG_0003.JPGIMG_0002.JPGIMG_0011.JPGIMG_0007.JPG

This is my finished wrist cuff. (colors in the photo are slightly off due to these not being taken in natural light)
IMG_0012.JPGIMG_0013.JPG

And lastly for my first post, my finished double belt and bag (colors in the photo are slightly off due to these not being taken in natural light). I chose to do the belt with snaps so it's easier for me to take on and off, but unless you are staring at my backside, you would never know :). The bag looks a lot more weathered in person, I used black and brown spray paint to age it a bit and I will be adding sand and powder for more distress.

Thank you! I will try that.

Of course everyone's experience will be different, depending upon the fabric (and the colour of it to begin with) and so on. I myself have used very little tan. i leaned HEAVILY on the taupe, and only used a small bit of tan to tip the scales away from purple town.

I'm using the white viscose from the the U.K. That everyone bought on eBay lol

I didn't really wear them for long and only had the wraps down on one leg, but it seemed like they'd stay put.

I also ended up getting the UK viscose, and will need to dye it a third time. I threw it into RIT Taupe first, then into Pearl Grey, which is exactly what I did with my crinkle cotton - but I don't think the Grey was strong enough, as it all washed out when I threw the fabric back into the wash.

I spent my free time this weekend (unsuccessfully) dyeing the viscose and working on and agonizing over the shirt. I'm pretty sure the placket/neckband on her shirt are a different fabric, and it looks like it's sewn on using a blanket stitch. I contemplated finding an appropriate fabric, said screw it, and just used the jersey knit. I did toy with some machine stitches to see if I could mimic the blanket stitch, but no luck. I just sewed it on with the machine, then hand stitched the back. Could've made it more accurate, but... sometimes my laziness overtakes my perfectionism, haha.

I did, however, decide that I wanted the ribbed sleeve to be close-to-accurate, and didn't want to mimic it with stitching, so I scoured Goodwill and ended up with this shirt to cut up:

The ribs are a bit too close together, but I think it'll probably work okay. I might poke around a few more stores to see if I can find something better.
