Rey - Star Wars: The Force Awakens Build (open for everyone!)

Wow! What an amazing site!!! I'm in crafter heaven. :) Thanks!

BTW for those of you searching for the right hardware for the chain, have you tried browsing through McMaster-Carr yet? I have yet to find a piece of hardware I couldn't find on their site.

Great tip with the foam nail file. :) I've used one on many parts as well.

What brand of silicone/casting resin are you going to use? Have you decided yet?

Hi,

Completed all the prep work on the "chain greeblie" today. Lots of sanding! I find that for round objects, nail files that have foam interiors like these (they bend) are very useful for basic smoothing. Then I follow up with fine grit sandpaper. I am going to be making my very first silicone mold of this piece and cast it in resin. Then I will roughen up, paint and weather the resin piece. I am so excited. I am taking the opportunity of making my daughter's Rey cosplay to learn some different skills I've never tried before. That is the thing that I love most about making props, every project has different challenges.

:)

I've used this product and it works great for casting just be quick to pour when mixed the resin will set very quick and you might want some other mold of something for what is left over so you can save the waste and it not harden in your cup yep for sure good stuff Love smooth-on.I used just plane red solo cups and toung blades for mixing but as soon as you mix be ready to pour. just follow the instructions its easy and you will be glad of the investment. Thanks....Jim

Reason I've not posted pics of anything I've bought is because I've been in South Korea for the last year away from my wife. who's been patiently waiting for me to come back and get started on this project. Well I'm back home with my family and we have to start acquiring all the materials now. Here's what we have so far in hand. Everything for the lightsaber minus the hilt which should be here in a month from korbath. And a few of the items I've bought.

Looks amazing Kristen!
On a side note. Am I imagining things or did the price on the belts listed on etsy jump like $70 in the last few days. I could have sworn the first time I clicked them the cuff was $25 and the belt was $30. Now the belts are $100+?

Just to be clear: the leather used for Rey's staff is two different base colors, right? One set is a base of black leather, and the other is a base of tan or khaki or something? Just want to make sure I am seeing this correctly, as they definitely do not seem to be the same base color.

Are they the same seller? There are lots of different sellers on Etsy making cuffs and belts. Not all are the same quality/authenticity of course. So perhaps the more spendy ones are better quality? (which makes perfect sense. time = money)

JJ, I used various scraps of medium, to dark brown leather, and then used acrylic paint (lots of layers) to get the desired affect. I'm making a few extra sets to sell, as I have a bunch of scrap I can use up. Plus they are fun to make. :)
