Rey Progress Thread from Star Wars: The Force Awakens

So I've got a huge convention coming up and I thought that I should pick a new costume to make, and after seeing TFA in December I was drawn to Rey like a fly to honey! This is an open thread for those who want to see the full process of making the costume and ask for any costuming advice! I'll update daily with new tidbits, and will post full costume pictures after the convention I'm premiering it at.

For now, I'll start with my wig!
I have mid-length brown hair (originally ginger, but recently dyed) but I decided to get the full, authentic "Rey" look, I'd put my hair away and use a wig. I ended up going to fairywigs for my base, since I've bought from them before and really loved my results... I went with this wig (http://www.fairywigs.com/Unique-Medium-Wavy-Sepia-African-American-Lace-Wigs-For-Women-116142.html) In 1B-30- it's a 14-inch wavy wig... lace-front and gorgeous! After several hours of irritation, tears, and youtube tutorials, this was the end result:

All in all, I'm happy with my purchase! Tomorrow I'll upload my progress on my Staff and the accessories I'll be using.

Thanks!
I'd looked over those tutorials before and found them pretty useful, but in the end, for me it's easier to watch a person physically doing it, even if its in a video. Great sources though!

So... I know I said I would be updating on my staff and accessories, but with the convention looming on the horizon (it starts on thursday!) I figured today could be all about sewing. I started with the shirt, because I'd never sewn a slit into the collar of a shirt before and figured it would be quite imperative to the costume.

My first attempt was drafted, and looked like this:

...Yeah, not my best work by far. It was too small, didn't have the range of stretch I was looking for, and all in all looked fairly terrible. This was still back when I believed that shirt-slits would be easy. Oh, how I've learned.

My next attempt was from a pattern that- gasp!- included a slit in the collar. I loved it! And so the process began...
VNzfPD9.jpg The pattern was cut, and it looked pretty good to me, and so I started to pin...

and then, finally, put the whole thing together.

In the end, it looked...

Terrible!
The seam lines were in the wrong place, the slit looked like a six year old had done it... I was devastated. I hoped that practice would make perfect and proceeded with a slightly stretchier fabric than muslin.

It was better, and looked pretty good!

Unfortunately, the seams were still in the wrong place, so I went back to drafting.

This was better than the others in the way that the seams were all in movie-accurate, but unfortunately, I am not a size eighteen! So that draft was scrapped. This led in to the... most disastrous sewing project I had ever done. I decided I should try a bias-bound slit, something I had never done before, and the results were not pretty.

I'll spare y'all the full number of mockups I made- it was around 30, with no good results. I finally decided to just wing it, because sometimes you reach a certain point in sewing where you just have to do a shot of vodka and move on.
In the end, I took out my hemp/cotton jersey blend (the movie accurate fabric for Rey's shirt) and threw caution to the wind and made the shirt in one go. At this point I decided to leave the collar for later.

That's all for today! Tomorrow I'll be working on the pants and gun and staff.
