Rey Alternate Outfit? (possible spoilers)

+1, a vest pattern would be very helpful. Right now, i'm hanging my hopes on the simplicity #6251 pattern mentioned awhile back, but I've had no luck finding it locally.

I used a pattern I already had and modified it. It was Burda Style 6958. I just frankenstined the two patterns in the packet together. The back seam is very close, I just made them more of an upside down J shape. And with the front seams, I just made them go higher. Then for the gauntlets, I used the sleeves from from Simplicity 1773, altering them slightly. I hope that helps a bit!

have a close look at Rey's right side right up near the collar...you can see the edge of the jacket is lined with something that looks like twill tape. so perhaps the jacket isn't self lined after all?

You are SO right, for the first inch and a half, it is lined with a plain matching grey wool or felt, then either switches to twill tape or just white wool or felt lining.

I also took the liberty to do color correction on the shot to make sure we're still looking at a grey vest!

EDIT: I just blew it up further, it might not even been wool or felt, I think it might be moleskin or suede for the first inch, then white cotton

Thanks for the pic, theflightyellz

I noticed that white collar interfacing before. People guessed it was interfacing to stiffen the collar. You can see the lining on the lower portion of the vest, too. It does look like it could be grey, but it might be the same fabric as the outside. One reason I was not looking forward to making this vest self-lined is that it would itch. So maybe they lined it with something softer like fleece or velvet or just twill?

Also, I went to see the movie again yesterday. Her shirt looked grey to me, not white. Do you think it is white, cream or a light grey?

It's a cream/off white. I'm going to dye mine eventually, or just make a new one. And yeah, a softer fabric lining would make more sense, as the wool against my neck has been very itchy lol.

Hello everyone, ever since I saw this outfit I knew I just had to cosplay it. The only problem is that I have absolutely no experience in sewing or making clothing. After reading through this thread I decided I could learn and try to do it. you guys have definitely given me ideas on fabrics, patterns, and how accurate I can make this. the main obstacle I'm facing for this is the fact that I'm a dude, (I think I'm one of the few guys, if any, doing his cosplay), and that this might be a bit complicated for a first time. Any advice on how I should go about this? I'm starting to learn how to use a sewing machine and different stitching techniques, I have a sewing machine and enough supplies to last a while, (my mom used to sew a lot).

For the vest, arguably the hardest aspect of the outfit, I do have a "screw it" option if this proves too difficult a task. I am dead set on doing the gauntlets, arm sleeves, and pants regardless. This might prove useful as a reference, but the new company "Volante Design", came out with their version of Rey's vest: http://www.volantedesign.us/product/scavenger-vest/
I'm willing to put down the money, because i'd most likely wear this normally, but I definitely wanna make this my own project.

I am actually working on a commission for a male customer of this cosplay, so you are SO not alone, mate! I am using a men's jacket pattern as my base for this, minus the sleeves. I'm also not doing princess seams in the front, as we have discovered from the higher res photos of the principal photography of episode VIII that there are no seams in the front. That will make it easier over all, especially on a male form. I can post photos as I work on it if that helps!

I actually talked to the tailor of that vest. It's pretty nice, but it is meant only as apparel, not cosplay.

I've gotta ask, how do I start with the vest? I know I need to get all my measurements and that i'll probably have to draw out a template, i'm just not sure how to go about doing that last part =S

Yes get your measurements, but I would seriously invest in a base pattern that you can use to modify if this your first big project. Simplicity has some great men's coats patterns you can use to modify.

Okay, now I have a question for you guys! Anyone here know how to dye wool? I found some lovely herringbone fabric for a commission, but when it arrived it was far to light.

Owlfeathers - Found these two links on dyeing wool - But, I've never tried it myself.

In my experience, when you dye to a darker color, it covers over a light pattern. I think it will pretty much cover up the herringbone pattern if you go to a darker grey. You'd need to be very careful and think of it in watercolor terms and only make a light "wash" of color, very watered down. But I'd still be afraid if you were trying to dye it to a darker grey, the whiter areas would fill in and it would look solid grey. A tea or coffee dye might work, by taking each color down separately, but it would alter the color and not look grey anymore.

In the picture you posted, the color looks just right. Is it lighter than the picture?

Maybe just dirty it up somehow?

If you have extra fabric, I would experiment on it.
