Retro / Steampunk Raygun project WIP

How do you plan on tackling the grip, do you have a found item in mind, or something you're going to make yourself?

This is really taking off, nice work!:thumbsup

I believe I'm going to have to go with wood for the grip.
I'll just have to find a strong wood and then do some cutting and filing.

I'll use either styrene or a sheet of brass for the panels of the sides of the grips.

For the grip, could you bend some 1/8" x 1/2" (or whatever) bar stock into the profile of the grip, and then use wood panels on each side? You'd need to put a shoulder inside to keep it in place. Run the screws into coupling nuts from both sides to keep it all together. My illustration doesn't show it, but you could put a mounting ear on each end of the brass strap.

That's a pretty good idea...However, I want the grip to have a hefty solid feel (I don't know how solid it will be with a hollow cavity inside).

On a side note -

It looks like the project is on hold until this weekend. I need a few things from the store and it's difficult for me to make it there during the work week.
So I decided to start on a little addition I will include with my project .
A 15-20 page owner's manual that will include info on the technology, working mechanincs , functions, testimonials and some blueprints.

More pics later.

Man, you're a one-man Weta competin' machine! :)

(y)thumbsup

LOL!

Ok man, don't make me spill the beans about the custom carrying case I'm gonna make for the gun.
And now that I think about it, the gun may need a holster...And a holster is not good without a belt. Or pants, and a shirt, and maybe a jacket, some goggles, a pith helmet, and boots, a rocket pack, a space ship...

(Ooops, just realized the gun is facing the wrong way in that pic...There's different crap on the other side.)

DS...seriously. You're my personal hero. :cool:thumbsup
You're doing (and quite well I might add) what I've been wanting to do since I first laid eyes on those Weta rayguns.

Lovin' this.

That is incredible!!! Just a great design and build. Any chance of a kit?

Thanks guys !

Small update -

Didn't yhave much time to swing by the hardware store for more supplies, but I did manage to stop by Big K and pick up a cheapie ladies watch.

I took the watch apart, took the winding arm out, (and a few other guts) removed the face and took some measurements.
Then I went into Illustrator and created a pressure guage face and printed out . I then cut the new face out and placed it over the old face on the watch (My printer kind of sucks, so this is basically just a little test...Tomorrow I'll print print it out from the printer at work)

Then I filed the company info off of the back of the watch, sanded the rest of the watch and dipped it in Aluminum black.
With the new color, and the new face, I then put the watch back together. I still need to dremel off the lugs on the watch....The placement on the gun is just temp (It's being held on by a flimsy piece of wiring)

I also experimented with a couple of different antenna coils...I think I'll be going with the thinner antenna -

BTW, does anyone have any info on types of strong wood?
Pretty soon I'll be moving on to the grips and want to get something durable.

More updates later

For something that cool, and old-school...

I hate to do it, but I have to go the cypress route. Expensive, yes. Durable? oh, hell yes.

Amazing work!!!

Thanks Hydin. I'll look into the cypress. I don't know how much it would be (I actually only need a piece about 1" thick, and 7" long, by 7" wide).

Both the artwork/picture and "the real thing" are bloody fantastic! Well done and thanks for sharing the progress pics.

Hope you don't mind a question/opinion.
Are you planning on keeping the vial/test tube as is? I think it'd look even better with some sort of brass wire protective 'cage' around it.

Something along the lines of:
