Retro / Steampunk Raygun project WIP

You going to go for a tarnished silvery color, or the cast iron look of the Weta ones?

Im going to try and stick to the color on the original concept design. Kind of a mid tone grey with some brown tones. Then Ill dirty it up with some darks, add rust stains around the seams, rivets, and some of the bluish green gunk on the copper coil.

OK, the grip arrived today!
I must give a big thanks to Dropshipbob, for offering to help out with the grip section. All I actually needed was the right wood (which is kind of hard to find here in Miami) and he went one step further and offered to cut the shape for the grip as well.

Anyhow, here's the grip section -

I've already begun beveling the edges of the grip. The next step is to smooth out the bevels and then but some brass plates which will be screwed on to the both sides of the grip (this will serve as both a grip plating and reinforcement for the wood itself).

More updates later.

Well, I finished sanding the grip. I then moved on to adding the saddle ring holder to the butt of the grip.
I took a ball lamp finial (found at Home Depot) and drilled the ring hole into it. I then used part of a grommet for the base and inserted a screw through the grommet base and into the ball finial.

I then went ahead and added two screws to the side of the grip (the grip consists of 4 seperate sections of wood glued together...I want to make damn sure the wood would stay together.)

And finally I attached the grip to the body by using two screws.

The next three steps consist of adding the trigger , then adding the trigger guard (might have to change the design of the trigger guard to a standard design...The design I originally intended has a pointy lower part which digs into the middle finger), and then I need to add the brass plates to either side of the grips (these plates will cover the two screws on the side of the grip.)

After that it should be smooth sailing with the painting of the gun.

More updates later.

Ok, where does the Tesla coil mount now? You need to add a tasser to it that will cause sparks on the end of the barrel!!

Owcha Magowcha! Color me impressed. That is some VERY fine work you got going on there. Good eye on ya!

I'm in the very middle of doing something very similar right now. I'll be making two identical duelling pistols in a brass/wood/ceramic/etc. steam-punky motif. I'm also planning some other "expeditionary gear" to accompany them.

The Tesla Coil and CO2 cartridge are still there. It's on the opposite side of the gun.

Hey Gordon, keep me posted if you start a thread on your project.

something to consider...

I take a hobby size container of super glue and soak the endgrain of wood to seal it for priming and painting and to harden it up. it really helps prevent those tiny pinholes you get in the primer from the endgrain breathing while it dries. dont bother removing any loose saw/sanding dust, the glue will make it into filler!

I just load it on and rub it in with my fingertip, stop before it gets too dry and you lose your fingertip!

makes your fingertip really strong for a few days too!

THanks for the tip!

I was actually considering buying some clear nail polish for the same purpose, but it seems super glue works better.

As it turns out I was able to use 2 small tubes of super glue to seal the entire handle.....And now I have figer tips of steel!

New update -

Well, I finally added the trigger, triger guard (That pointy tip kept digging into my finger so I had to change the trigger guard design), added a small housing for the trigger, and added the side plates.

Almost at the finish line...Just need to start on the painting process -

What are you painting? Looks pretty dang good right now! Looks finished, I mean.

Mind blowing. Great, great work!!

MUCHO MUCHO COOLIO.

And I agree.. what paint? A little verdegris in the corners and you've got a splendid finish already!

Well, the concept art on the first page shows it as more of an aged steel finish, so that's probably what he'll go for - though for my part, I agree that it looks fantastic as it is! Maybe I'm just a sucker for brass.
