Remake vs Re-release

I don't like the idea of re-mastered re-releases any more than I like the idea of remakes. Can you imagine if Ridley Scott got ahold of Blade Runner and updated it with Modern Effects? He'd make it look exactly like Total Recall. He'd probably also add some additional action scenes and some digital Harrison Ford scenes in for good measure. Why not advertise for Apple and have Deckard calling Rachel on an iPhone using FaceTime?

I still fail to realize why they don't promote original scripts. They can say "It's all about the money" but most of the remakes these days seem to be flopping.

I'm with Garlic on this one, I have no problem with a re-release that has corrected flaws and cleaned up/restored print. There's nothing wrong with a bit of wire removal, dust busting, and removing of matte lines, these were all things that were not meant to be seen by the audience and in the cases they were I think the filmmakers sort of hoped that you'd not pay any attention to them and simply ignore them. Take the wires in old movies for instance, there's a reason why they used as thin a wire as possible and colored them to match the background, it's because they had no means of removing them so they try to hide them as best they can. Now a days, whenever any wire work is required they use much thicker and safer wires because they know that they can remove them pretty easily in post. When it comes to these sorts of things I feel that the creator's intent rules, did they intend for you to notice wires, matte lines, asymmetrical props, etc., if not, then I have no problem with them fixing it.

I like that they're giving out posters with re-releases, just makes me feel slightly less of a sucker for shelling out again.

I may be in a minority but I'd love a Jaws re-release with a well done CGI shark. I think it would be terrifying, especially for us fanboys who've seen the original hundreds of times. Completely understand why folks are wary of that kind of idea though.

What made Jaws really great was that the shark didn't work and Speilberg had to make a different movie where the viewer used their imagination, which made it even more terrifying. That could never be recaptured, as all the sequels found out.

BINGO!!!!

When they came out with the 1997 Special Editions of Star Wars, I remember thinking to myself that, with the exception of Greedo shooting first, the changes made were quite good and enhanced the film.

Then I thought to myself "What if they used the same techniques to improve The Last Starfighter?"

You know, redoing the CGI to look more realistic. It was state of the art back then, and it was the first movie to utilize completely CGI scenes, but any competent 3D guy could render better scenes in about the same amount of time using standard desktop computers.

Imagine how awesome The Last Starfighter's space scenes would be if they redid them using today's technology.

Or that whole mess in Jabba's palace... :facepalm

But yes, the more grievous offences took place in later tinkering such as the change in dialogue in ESB and the elimination of Sebastian Shaw in ROTJ.

ESB dialogue change? And Hayden Christensen most definately did not belong in ROTJ. I also miss the Yub Yub song :(

The use of Temuera Morrison's voice for Boba Fett, and also redoing the Emperor's scene with Vader are the ones that most readily come to mind.

Re: Remake vs Re-release
Yeah, I know what the WIPO says, and I know what the 1976 Copyright Act says, too. Those are important to protect artists, but I think art goes beyond just the artist.

I support artists being able to make money off of what they want, but I think it's irresponsible and short-sighted of them to suppress what they did before.

i agree....i know this argument always comes up in these threads and someone always throws this line in...'well, its his/her film and he/she can do whatever they want with it...." To a point, yes it may be their creation and they can do what ever they want in editing and music scoring or in FX to make it "their" vision BUT the second it is released into the world it also belongs to the fans. George may have dreamed up the adventures of Luke Starkiller but it was FOX and Alan Ladd who put up the cash to make it happen, Lucas ( I don't want to harp George its just that he's become the poster child in these arguments) was in no position to bankroll it himself back then. But again... they (Lucas, Fox & Ladd) just made a product which in this instance is a film, it was 10's of millions of fans back in the day that made it a success and we deserve a little respect. I don't mind dishing out a few extra dollars for both versions in my blu ray pack. I just want the choice which to watch, new and "improved" or the original with all its wonderful flaws. I'm gaging as I say this but I hope, (crossing my myself) i hope that Disney (the real evil Empire) puts out ANH & ESB (I guess jedi too, not that I care about that one too much) in its original version in blu ray. Yeah, yeah, yeah...someone had to bring it up AGAIN. I didn't WANT to go there it just happens and everyone else is guilty of it as well.

Have you seen anyone produce a convincing CGI shark? No? Case closed!
here, here. DEEP BLUE SEA.....nuf said.
