Recasting a Sci-Fi Icon; The Classic Star Trek Communicator

I think we're all holding our breath for the same treatment of PII, but we have to get these communicators in our hands first!
John, I need to get on that list!

Glad we are close to seeing these in person!

Probably the best replica of the TOS communicator that I've ever seen pictures of, I can't wait to see it in person. Very well done John.

Hi guys-we just finished-up all of the replica slot car hubs for the kits!

As most of you know, the original Communicator props used 1960s T-Jet Hubs
as both the control knobs, and the bezels for the little indicator lights (rhinestones.)
Now I’ve seen replicas of these in the past, but there was always something that
wasn’t quite right with them as compared to the vintage ones. So, we went ahead
and actually manufactured exacting replicas of the correct vintage hubs.
I’m thrilled with how these turned-out. Just one more thing that will make the kit
authentic.

Thanks-more to follow!

Beautiful work, John, and a great choice to have these recreated from the correct vintage hubs. :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

Very nice pictures, thanks for the post! Nice looking Kydex to! Is that the type of pattern you will be making the shells out of? Is the green jewel going to be larger in the kit to?

That material is just a little different than the stuff the shells are
pulled from. As for the green jewel, yes, that's one of the actual
jewels for the kit. If you look at the picture in "the Making of Star Trek,"
you'll notice that the jewels are not all the same size. Also in that pic,
you can see that one of the jewels (the large one) is an AB style
stone, and the other two are not. It's a B&W picture, but you can
still tell by the way the light reflects off of it. You can also see that the
stone on the right is very dark, and the center one is considerably
lighter-and lets a lot of light through. Based on my research, I think
it's a pretty safe bet that what we're looking at in that old pic is
probably just another example of the reoccurring green, amber, and red
jewel color scheme.

Of course if you wanted something different on your Comm, you could
just use whatever rhinestones you want:)

Thanks.

Very nice work. I (and I'm sure others) would love to see some of these parts made available as "upgrade kits" for the DST/AA communicators. Unfortunately, the full kit is outside of my price range. :(

If I have any extra parts, and the studio says it's
cool, I'd probably consider doing something like that.
Right now I'm just all about getting these kits out.

Thanks.

Jlong sent me this photo to put up to show the first build of the new kit (he is working on a large project other than the Comms right now or he would have posted himself). I think there is still some work being done on the inserts and the boxes have not arrived yet but we should be seeing these kits soon.

Here is the first buildup made completely from the parts that come in the kit (absolutely no parts that do not come in the kit are on this model). What you see is what you get. Some time this week I will post some photos of it sitting next to the two real ones so everyone can compare the photos. (this one has another one of the moire patterns that is included in the kit)
