Rebel Transport scratchbuild.

Re: A storm is coming!

Awesome, Lee, and Allan.

Damn! There are THAT many Karl cranes in there? :)

I'm really wanting to start laying out my belly plate, but too many kits still in the post (where the heck is my second Tyrell, waaah??!)

I'll never know how you guys worked out that it was Gepards front and rear. I just look at those areas and go 'huhhh?' Owe yas!

Re: A storm is coming!

There may not be as many Karl cranes in there Martyn, not sure bud, but who's really to know huh :lol So i embelished a little, they fit and look so good in there, and, the Chronicles pics do seem to depict them.

Yeah, there's definitely a lot of horizontal stuff in there. Ah who cares - it looks great!

Cheers,
Martyn

Re: A storm is coming!

I care, ive just removed a couple Martyn lol, didnt quite fit the bill :lol
I could go insane getting this just to my liking lol, but if its gonna be done, its gonna be done well.
I reckon, by next weekend, ill HAVE to cut those rear upper engines, yup im still putting it off :lol

Sorry if I put you off!! I thought they looked fine, and they'd carry the cargo cans well.

How many Leo rail chassis did you end up using, was it two-and-a-bit down each side?

I just turned out bucks for those engines this afternoon. Small enough I can vac them on my crappy home-made vacformer. The rest is going to a signwriting place hopefully.

I'm looking forwards to seeing those upper engines go on. You guys look like you have the right cross-section on the rear hull - not too steep - so you should be able to get the right spacing between them.

Cheers,
Martyn

Martyn, no buddy lol, i keep changing stuff as i go anyways lol, its become an addiction.
As for the upper engines, yeah, i think they will work out very well, Allan tends to doubt the shape he created, but, i keep telling him, "you nailed it buddy" lol.
Leo chassis', i just used two either side, there completely covered when shes built, so you could even get away with not using them TBH, hence me and Allan didnt make the funny (waste) cut ILM did.

Yeah, that's true. It's amazing how much quality kitbashing they totally covered over!

Allan's not alone, I'm having the same paranoia attacks over my bucks. I keep wanting to make changes before I commit! I think Allan's shape is bloody good around the tail area. Harder to say around the nose because of the lack of reference from a good top angle, but I can't fault anything there.

Re: A storm is coming!

Wow! great job Lee. You have really nailed it. I love seeing all those lovely wigets and pipes. It will be a great one to paint and weather. Top job mate!

Re: A storm is coming!

Lee, Allan, you're doing a piece of history at its best.
Your models are slightly different, and I love both !

Im in awe guys, yeah you had the balls to build it ! Thanks for some refreshing projects like this one, I'm really pleased to see some scratchbuild and to see a very original model being built.

Ive never noticed how all the containers were attached to the underbelly ?
Bro, I think you need more than 40 containers / model IMHO. 60-70 would be a bit closer ! I could be wrong though, I'm sure you counted them all. :)

Cant wait to see more !

Re: A storm is coming!

Julien, in the 'unfinished' Chronicles pic you can just make out a bunch of Plastruct square-section stubs. These look like they have to be the mounts for the containers. But Lee has something better in mind...can't wait to see! :)

Re: A storm is coming!

Hah, bro, we could need more, but the order is for 40, may change yet.
Good news is the engine bells are now sorted and in reputed good hands for machining too, cant wait to see them!

Martyn, lol, nothing elaborate TBH, the belly, will use the same method ILM did....why? Ive tested it, and it works. I used Plastruct acrylic square tube, ran a K&S rod inside, and mounted with CA....lil bit flimsy, sooo ive got some tiny self tappers enroute, so said tubing, can be screwed through the belly plate and into the hole in the square.....job done i reckon.

The nose, well the boxes there are just stacked on detail and kit parts, so thats a simple fix.

Im right now in the process, of assessing if i rip most of my belly detail off at the front TBH, im not quite happy with it, dont know, what do you guys reckon, not looking for any smoke up my cornhole, just want some opinions really as im kinda on the fence with what ive done so far, and id rather pick it off now and start again, than go any further lol.

Lee, can you take a pic looking up into it at about the same angle as the Chronicles pic? Offhand I'd just say it's all awesome and looks great, and that this ship is a bit of a jumble anyway, but if you can give us a direct comparo to work off I'll give you a more thought-out response.

Hey - I'm OK on the cargo containers, but any chance of jumping on that engine bell order? :D

Re: A storm is coming!

Had to get ont he job ive been putting off since i cut the hull out, those dreaded upper engine cowls.
This tiny bit of progress, has took almost all day, and its still in rough phase lol.
So many variables to get right, in the end, i just attacked it, kinda chickened out a tad on the apertures, they should be larger i think, but, i reckon this looks about right?
I used F4 droptanks for the apertures "filling", the ref seems to show a droptank or bomb in use here, maybe a tad smaller, but the F4 suited my cuts better, and, ive not cut the apertures to the droptank edge (re. chickened LOL) to keep things much neater for my own sanity!
She was never going to be uber accurate, but i think we are finally seeing a Rebel Transport here lol?

Re: A storm is coming!

Lee, I thought the engine "gun troughs" were maybe vacced off the same bucks as the engines, but looking at the refs the profiles are different so I think drop-tanks are a better choice.

You modded your spine fin, eh?

Re: A storm is coming!

Cheers Allan! Martyn, well they may well be pulls from the engines, but,the ref i have, does seem to show them as a drop tank, even down to the pointed nose, so its rather confusing, rounded/flat "trough" and slender pointed drop tank shape on the underside...weird huh lol.

There does appear to be hull overlap in places where the engine sits, so may they glued any old thing in to plug the hole, i can see there not set neatly on the prop, kinda crooked, flush in some places, overlap in others, i went with overlap all round was easier and a tad neater.

I "could" dremel out the apertures to the droptank edge but then, the hull plates still have to overlap....thoughts on that? could wind up looking scruffy though as this is one nasty little area, i see even Lasse's wonderful build had a bit of roughness in this region!

lee

Re: A storm is coming!

I can also see drop tanks on my ref pics, that's looking really great bro !

It looks like the edges of the apertures are flush with the tank walls, I would dremel the apertures bro ! And the tip of the apertures looks to be more narrow, but you said it was still in the rough phase !

Re: A storm is coming!

Bro, ill take them to the edge, maybe just get a fine grind tip in and run the styrene into the droptank.
Doing this, will give a pointier look to the aperture Julien, ill get to it in the AM :lol

Re: A storm is coming!

Lee the drop tanks are great they are so smooth in there!! Did they fit the curvature where the cut out is? I mean the drop tanks were not to wide were they? I am having this problem with the pod-car laser tubes.:angry

Thats going to look super smooth with primer in there!!
