Re-inventing Lukes ANH Lightsaber- And Vaders too??!?!

Ok, ok, Gav and Chip, so its off by 3mm....You have to understand guys that when I first noticed this, I just eyeballed it and it look centered rather than on the edge...I never actually took measurements..I think I hit it pretty close to the mark for just eyeballing a blurry pic with a bad angle. It actually took a whole page with a crapload of referrence pics before I even convinced one person about this..

But Gav the position is not as you pointed out on the pic below which you posted on page 1.

Eh, don't worry, for all intents and purposes I would say its "supposed" to be centered, but we all know the slapshod jobs done in props departments.

I seriously doubt there were plans drawn up for the prop stipulating a 3mm offset.

Like I always say, some people want to emulate the screen used prop, and others want to replicate the fictional piece of hardware that the prop is supposed to be.

Another thing is also 100% proved by this new pic.

Look closely and you can see that there's no reflective tape backing the calk display. I know that this is nothing major but since 95% seems to use it it might be a good idea to tear it away if you want to go 100% movie accurate.

To me, it also appears as though they didn't sand the raised ridge on the back of the bubble strip flush. See the rectangular indent for the LEDs showing thru?

Have any of you determined wether or not this is the same as the screen used part?

I never understood why people sanded it flush!? I kept most of the square ridge on my Exactra display and it looks exactly like the one in the pic. I think that the ridge is a very cool feature that separates the real deal from the repros!

Steve.

As far as I know the mylar tape behind the bubbles NEVER existing on any of the props, it is simply something that has been done on replica as an asthetic choice.

BTW here is another useful bit of minutia on the ANH saber. You know how there is a little bit of play on the bottom and headshell? Specifically the ability to push them in and out of the clamp about 1/16th of an inch.

Well nearest I can tell the head is pushed all the way into the clamp, and the bottom is pulled all the way out. The power switch for the test bulbe is also in the up/on position.

I messed around with that pic in Photoshop trying to determine some dimensions. The D-ring hinge appears to be perfectly perpendicular to the clamp's orientation (94.7º and 4.7º). The D-ring appears to be 27mm wide which is bigger than 1" (25.4mm). I realise the pic isn't very high res and that slightly different measuring points will change these numbers, but I even tried to stack the tolerences in favor of 25.4mm and I couldn't even come close. Is 27mm a standard English sized D-ring? - they are on the metric system, so I doubt their standard D-ring is 1". I come up with 20.5mm as the hinge width.

Don't any of you have ANH on laser disc? Laser is much higher res than VHS and maybe the pan-n-scan laser would be even better. As long as the lightsaber isn't cropped, it would be bigger.

tlrgsxr,

If you scale the end of the saber on the high res pic that Jfowler supplied, the bracket is .75" wide and the outer measurement of the D-ring is also 1".

So what about the mylar stripe around the clamp theory!? I sure can't see it, but I can't read the word Graflex on any of these new pics either!?

Thoughts?

Steve.

WOW. How did I miss this?
I'm sold on the 7 grips and slightly off centered D-Ring. Chip - is there any chance you could give us a nice computer model of the back of the Saber showing what it would look like in the movie version (ears at 12 o'clock, bubbles at 10 o'clock as you look from the rear).
Thanks!

Chris.

Yeah Darth, that was when I first posted. I never thought it was centered. I still thought the d-ring should be closer to the edge.

WHen I posted a 2nd time, I had changed my mind on being near the edge adn closer tot he center after I had looked at the pictures closer. Just not centered.

It would have helped if I would have stated that the little fact that I changed my mind.

I did and I came up with 27mm. Like I said I tried using different points in favor of 25.4mm and I could NOT come close. Why don't you mark the points you use to come up with 25.4mm and post it? I would, but I don't have a picture host. Can someone else try to verify my numbers?

tlrgsxr, here you go:

Its a bit tricky seeing the end of the flash itself, you have to remember to take into consideration the slight roundover on the very bottom of the flash.

I'm not sure anyone cares, but...
I don't see how this pic can be accurate since it has been rotated and thus resampled. Regardless, no matter how I measure it, I come up with significantly more than 25.4mm. So, are you saying you MEASURED this pic and came up with 25.4mm? I don't see how you could.

I'm measuring the original scan and all measurments are at approximately 94.7º. I'm using the outer graflex edge as my base measurment and I'm double checking using the inner ridge edge. I've tried to stack the tolerances my measurments in favor of a 25.4mm d-ring and the closest I've come is 26.5+mm. So, personally, I don't see how this could be a 1" (25.4mm) d-ring. It's sort of all moot for me, since it hasn't been determined if this is the screen used piece anyway.

O.k.- I just did a freeze frame through the movie...Heres what I found..

1.)Scene inside Obi-Wans house- 2 seconds before Luke asks Ben"How did my father die?" you can see the D-ring movie on its hinge...The D-ring hinge in the screen used saber also looks like its in the centered position.
When Luke tells ben "I can take you as far as anchorhead"
theres a pretty good shot of the grip placement...7 grips-

2.) Scene when Luke and Ben find the Dead Jawas- Luke spins around and says "Why would imperial troops want to slaughter Jawas?" look at Lukes saber....ITS MISSING ONE GRIP!!...theres a big ass gap of space between the grips...It might have fallen off and been reattatched later...Or it could be glare. You decide

3.) Scene where Luke parks his speeder in front of the cantina and jumps out- when Luke jumps out of the speeder he is chasing away a Jawa, here you can also see a good shot of the 7 grip placement.

4.) Scene where Luke, Han, Chewy and Ben are hiding in cargo hold on the Falcon- When Luke pulls himself out of the cargo hold and sits on the edge look at his saber....6 GRIPS!!!!
Look at the amount of space between grips during this scene..

Once again you be the judge...Can anyone get screen caps of these scenes?

Heres another refference pic I found...
