While posting about the Mara Jade MOTS saber I posted an image of the Darth Bane (top one) saber for size comparison

It was a hint on what else is to come in the Legends line, but I made a mistake by saying that the Bane hilt was the newer version with no real investigation on my part.

Then Joke3rr pointed out the saber was not new and after some back and fort we found that it dates as back as 2002 on "The new essential guide to characters"

However Sluis Van Shipyard had pointed out that the saber has been described as curved and even Wookiepedia says the same while showing a picture of the straight hilt.

Sluis also shared this pic where you can see the curved hilt but its different

So I asked the question, where did that hilt come from? since acoording to Wookiepiedia, the cuved hilt was first introduced in 2012 on "The essential readers companion" book from Pablo Hidalgo where this pic was shown

To me that pic shows the same hilt as before with just a curve on the bottom. Like this

Sure it has a little bend on the top as well but ever so slightly.

Rexermus believes it could be inspired by the Genesis custom sabers design.

Does anyone know if this is the case?

That 1/4 scale figure (fan-made?) looks to be using the Genesis Custom Sabers, Bane, for inspiration.

The short story "Bane of the Sith" from Star Wars Gamer #3 describes his lightsaber as "hook-handled". Though the art itself shows a straight lightsaber. And if anyone is interested in reading Star Wars Gamer #3

Has anyone seen the version being developed by Jawas Junkyard? They’re doing the hooked hilt with Krayt bone.

I know there are basically two versions: The one based entirely on descriptions in books, and the one depicted in comics and other media. The depictions tend to look more like traditional sabers, but I like the idea of a bone based lightsaber.

I'm not sure how I feel about Jawa's interpretation. It feels more Prequels-era than Old Republic, but it's not a bad design in and of itself, just doesn't seem like it fits the era it's supposed to be from

I am going to stick with the illustration versions, the straight + curved bottom.
Honestly, I would love to see you're own interpretation that includes the curve, hooked pommel and Kryat bone. But yeah, sticking with replicating the "official" interpretation instead of other creator's interpretations would be better

I understand your point of view about the high republic vs. the prequels, but I’m not sure I agree. Yes, the high republic era was supposedly a time or ornate Jedi weapons, but would that aesthetic sensibility apply to Sith lightsabers? I tend to think that the ideological differences between Jedi and Sith would influence the designs of their lightsabers.

I know that this is getting slightly off-topic, so I digress.

Years ago I emailed or Tweeted Drew Karpyshyn for clarification on the "hook handled" description. He said it was shaped similar to Dooku's. So there's no literal hook on it, it's just curved. Odd way to describe it because I was thinking something more extreme like an umbrella handle or something.

The first image you posted is his current, canon lightsaber design. This image is from a series of variant covers highlighting different characters and their lightsabers.

It is described as hooked in Legends material, pre-Disney, and there was no single, specific design created for that so everything you find will be an artists interpretation.

As for lightsabers themselves, they have recently undergone a pretty dramatic recontextualization. They range from mere tools to personal works of art to assigned sidearms to mass produced weapons and even fashion accessories. There isn't really such a thing as a "design that fits the era" anymore as we have descriptions of sabers that are basically tubes with visible welds and globs of solder during the decadent High Republic era, and elaborate gold and chrome designs in the more stripped down Prequel era.

This is why I originaly said "The new one" but this one is definetly based on the prior artwork. Thanks

That one looks fine. The problem is that version of Bane is too skinny. I'm guessing it's his armor after he removes the Orbalisks. He was a massive guy though.

I was confused what the OP was looking for. I thought he was trying to work out Bane's definitive saber and not the origin of the design. I suppose he could contact the artist for that info.
A lot of my confusion comes from the talk about the curved hilt and my personal hangup about canon and Legends.
The Chinese inspired look from the comic cover is based on his canon design from the Clone Wars and now Disney. The Orbalisk armor and the curved hilt are Legends. Since a lot of his history hasn't been fleshed out, he could still have both at one point. A curved hilt, a straight hilt, a spear, orbalisk armor, more traditional armor. He could have been enormous and withered with age. There isn't anything to say he didn't live 500 years and went through all of it at some point.

As a saber maker I always look for projects that are interesting and apealing to me. It was suggested to me by a person from Facebook that I should to this one:

So part of the selection process it learning from the character and all the history. It seems that there is no definitive version like you suggest, which to me makes sense.
