R2D2 Build

Yeah I used silicone on pretty much all the panels on mine and have been driving him around for a couple of years now with no problems. It holds well, and the nice thing is that down the road if you choose to upgrade a panel with a new gadget, arm, etc. you can pop it off with a little bit of prying! can't do that with the JB weld for sure!

This is a shot of mine from back in the spring, I still need to do a few detail pieces and the battery boxes, but otherwise he's good:

any silicone links i should look at on amazon? I'll be getting dome two in december :)...might as well plan ahead now!

Well, so far so good.. I once again took the rockler bearing apart, and I think it's working far better now..

Current r2 status - YouTube

Utility arms should get here next week, and that'll complete the body....starting to find blogs on how the legs should go together, but can't find one yet with someone who is working with metal legs...I'm still unsure how everything is supposed to screw in

octogon ports painted, hopefully the proper way. I don't think i'm going to attempt to paint the Power Couplers..looks too complicated..

coin slots got a light paint today. front frames got painted... utility arms arriving next week, body should be done

damn, that was fast.. yay :)

Coin return paint attempt... even though I taped up all the white, lots of blue still leaked out....oh well....even though I didn't get all the silver, I might go back with a paint brush later and try to fix it up... Now I've just gotta re-paint that area and the front frames will be as good as I can make them. eventually, I will probably order a second set and use silicone instead of the jb weld in the hopes that'll make them look nicer..

I'll get some silicone for when I remove three panels for better fitting later. I'm also going to get some recomended paint stripper and try and start from scratch on the left side of the skins...

utliity arms using the new lighter blue color. I notice some official R2's seem to be two colors..one dark blue, other parts light blue. I can't decide which one i like better, so it'll fit right in :).

Obligatory test fit... soon as I figure out how they fit in there properly. The rod doesn't fit into the holes, and the circular tube doesn't fit in to the sunken hole...so not sure how it's supposed to stay stable..hopefully the right part of the power coupler and ports are painted properly..

Looking good but you need LIGHT coats of paint. I know it's hard to do but it looks much better. Just a light coat until it's mostly covered. Then let it dry a bit before the next coat.

for the arms, that WAS light! :) I did one dot of spray for less than a nano second until it was covered. and that was it. no second coat.. :)

Yepp,

from the picture above of the arms i would say the distance is much too close, there is too less paint on the cardboard indicating that.... !

Spray light coats from 10" distance, even it don't cover the first time, wait a moment, and continue spraying light layers on with a short break between.

Don't try to get it fully coated in on step.

apart from the paint job, how does it all look?

It looks good but in all honesty those panels really need to be cleaned up. Plus the paint looks too thick on some of them. Like Toxx says, spray from 10-12" away. If you look at the arm on the right in your pic there's practically a puddle on it. You also need to start spraying before the arm and continue past it a bit. If you start right on it you'll end up with a lot of paint at the start and end. Check youtube for some videos on painting. that may help.

You could always try and cover the panels with some weathering if you wanted to dirty him up. That would cover a lot of mistakes and whatever else you're not happy with.

It looks much better than mine so good job. Mine is barley started and will probably never get finished. :unsure

I'm going to try the paint remover mentioned over here or on the other board. If that works, I'll start from scratch or just have someone else do it. i've given up. the only one that turned out ok was the skirt, and i didn't do anything different t here either..

as for the panels, at least three will get detached, cleaned up and reseated. the rest look ok enough that i'll keep them as they are..

Don't give up. Like I said try looking at some videos on youtube. Or practice on some scrap wood or cardboard. It's not that difficult. It is tempting to want to try and cover the whole piece in one shot. Just use light coats and it will cover after 3 or 4 coats. Remember, start before the piece and finish after. You just to need to move quickly enough so it covers without pooling.

You've put it together nicely so far. Surely you can tackle the painting part. Give it another shot.

that was a scary set of moments ripping off the old boards usb connector. Now I have the new board setup on the old light system and cooking better than before now that i had the longer rods on the arduino. The old one had them loosely soldered on so i could do the two board setup..

Toward the end of the month when more time is had, i'll take off some panels on the front, clean them up and reseat them...hopefully that will make them look better..

Now it's back to doing more research on how to install the legs...i still say they are going to be more a pain in the ass to do then everything else..

Final Body updates....The only thing left to do is major clean up and panel reseating...also figure out what i'm going to do with that one empty space on both sides...eventually those resin deep pocket vents will get replaced with metal so they better fit the frame curve..but other than that its done

My shoulder hubs arrived, yay! I guess that'd be a good test for the silicone since some of those parts seem removable :).

Primed the leg parts. Gave a very rough/bad paint job to the booster..
still not sure how all these parts attach just yet..

the screw idea seemed to work ok, since i didn't see how you where supposed to attach them through blogs...but the tapping idea for the circulars not so much. i may just glue those on...
