Quick Q: Sanding spray Paint

Either my search-fu is off, or no one has asked this specific question before. And my widespread internet searches have turned up mostly automotive-based results, which are not as relevant.

I'm working on a prop helmet (build thread in the DC forum) and ran into a snag. After 3 coats of primer, all of them wet sanded after fully drying, I sprayed my first coat of paint this past weekend. It was going pretty well until some slack in my drop cloth caught the wind and whipped up to attach itself to the helmet face. Not to mention the beetle that decided to land between the eye brows, get stuck in the newly wet paint, and led to some smudging upon its removal.

I want to sand it down and apply a second (or new) coat, but I have two concerns: first, it is a Rustoleum Gloss so I am not sure how much sanding I have to do to make sure the new coat will adhere properly, and second I am worried about over-sanding considering I have already reached the second layer of primer on a few of the edges (see picture).

What do you more experienced folks think: Do I have to very carefully sand the entire coat off (and possibly prime once more) before painting a second time? Or do I just have to get rid of the gloss finish on the surface?
