Quasimodo Darth Vader helmet - Version II

Hi Mac can you or someone else who has better photoshop skills then myself do a side by side or split pic comparison to a efx legend,GH,SL with the dome on please. I would love to see how they line up. As far as your sculpt is beyond anything I've seen done without having a lineage helmet used as a starter. When comparing the v1 and v2, visually the v1 seems to have a more correct neck flare to me until you put the pic of the v2 on the chest armor then it seems just about perfectly sized. Kudos on your fine work. I'm subscribing to follow and color me interested for a ESB

SithLord822,

Wow, a challenge. A line-up of 4 helmets is a little hard on the eyes and requires photos of the same photographic angles and distances. The problem is, despite my Google search, all I can find are rough similarities, so your mileage will vary when it comes to comparative value.

Well, first, let me do a structural study of the eFX vs Quasimodo 2 first. The camera is closer to the eFX than it was to Quasi, so it looks like it has a bigger face than Quasi, so please note the false positive. This is more a comparison of aesthetic balance and dome shape:

Just to me personally, the eFX ANH dome warpage never really appealed to me, but from certain angles it can look good.

Now the comp you asked for. And again, note that everything is oriented differently:

(Left to right: eFX, Quasimodo V2, SL and GH ANH)

Now first, I need to be impartial and explain a few things. In addition to the discrepancies of the orientations, angles and camera distances, the lighting angle and paint finish are different on all helmets, so each will have their different appearances, so some strengths and weaknesses will be apparent and will vary. The GH ANH has unfortunately been bashed for its massively pulled-out neck, but there are indeed castings that have a narrower and more accurate neck, and these don't get as much attention (but photos of these, especially of a forward-facing direction, are hard to find).

The flaring and warpage of the eFX was covered previously. The SL here is an SL casting and not the original SL, and it was previously pointed out by someone that the SL dome casting had too much flare, but my personal take is that the sides of the domecap appear too compressed, but sometimes it's hard to tell from photos, as rotating a dome to either side by merely a few millimeters can alter profile perceptions significantly. Finally, the GH ANH dome orientation should be noted as different than the first three helmets.

Enjoy. Comments welcome!

Mac thank you for going above and beyond I didn't mean all the screen cast helmets I just wanted one to compare but as usual you went above and beyond :)

Just added a couple more armour pics.

For those who feel slight preference for the V1 I can tell you that you aren't alone, the V1 pictured in this thread is actually the one that I kept for myself and I have no plans to replace it with the V2. I actually really like the sharpness of the Y crease and the slightly squatter look to the face, and for something that spends all of its time on a shelf, I'm super happy with it.

As an aside, the difference in tones between the V1 and V2 pics will be coming from the fact that I put some black fabric over the bench to photograph the V2, where the V1 is picking up the light brown colour of the bench it's sitting on

Ah yes, the Y-crease. We've wondered for years what that really looks like. I don't believe the eFX is completely accurate. At one point, an eFX prototype was even resculpted in this specific area. My past work was quite sharp, not taking into account how greatly contrasted the surfaces would be once under gloss paint (hey, I'm a sculptor, not a painter). But after studying an eFX up close, the SL, the DJ and ANH screenshots, I made an educated guess.

The V2's Y-crease is somewhere between my V1 and the eFX. It has more sculpted detail than the eFX's Y-crease area.

Love this version.... Not an expert but I could easily see this in my collection.

Thanks, Phil. It's an honor to receive such accolade from a very accomplished sculptor. Your Yoda and Maul are among my very top favorites. I am still learning how to sculpt. :thumbsup

As a fanmade sculpt I don't expect a 100% match to a movie helmet. And with artistic license, some differences where certain characteristics are accentuated can be incorporated. Of course many do prefer a helmet as accurate to the movie helmets as possible. So with that in mind, I will describe my concern about whether the skirts/flanges of the dome sculpt might be a bit too long.

I presume the photos here of the V1 and V2 side-by-side were taken from 6 feet. But when I compare to the closest-to-accurate piece in my collection (a DPDLX which I know isn't 100%, but it's close) it looks more like the V1 and V2 pics were taken from 12':

Perspective distortion comes into play where even the slightest change in dome tilt angle or camera viewpoint angle or distance can yield a very different look. It can also make a sculpt look correct from some distances and viewpoints but not from others. If not all features have the same shape and size as the original (or at least be of the same proportions), these differences are inevitable. Of course, when I say this to Mac, I'm preaching to the preacher!

The dome length of ANH Ugly, V1, and V2 appear to be about the same, and IMO they are too long. So my input in terms of improving accuracy would be to compare this dome sculpt to movie reference shots at long range (12' or greater) to evaluate the dome (skirt) length. As distances increases, the effects of perspective distortion (manifested as perceived object depth) diminish such that the linear measurements from the image correspond more closely to the linear measurements of the object. I described and quantified this in a study I posted on a site about-we-cannot-speak-of-here with the title "Perspective distortion and angular magnification."

I appreciate the analysis, bantha.

I do not believe I sculpted Quasimodo V2's dome incorrectly. Although the rear of the V1 might be a bit too short and thus I restored what I felt was the proper rear length, the eFX ANH Vader sets the bar, and that is not a bar I want to lose face to in view of comparisons (see below)

As you can see, the flange lengths are similar.

Good questions and comments. Keep 'em coming! :thumbsup

It's almost a dead ringer for the SL... Wow

I appreciate that! I value the SL - not only its detail but its overall structure, although the dome - as it has been pointed out by others - might have some room for improvement. The mask is really beautiful, and as SL had shown in his own comparison against the eFX, the SL is larger and a touch wider.

My goal was to more emulate the slightly more slender eFX, although the V1 base was a touch wider than the eFX.

The SL may still have facial width superiority, but after doing this comparison, I was pleasantly surprised:

Thanks for pointing this out!

I'm glad you see it too, when you put the four side by side my mind process went... The cheeks on the efx look to narrow Vader looks almost starved or sad lol. Your and the SL have the same mean look to it and that's what I love about the SL that mean look that is Vader and the GH looks like he's bloated.. Just how I internalized it

I have been following your threads.Great work & effort you put in eveyone of them.I am patiently waiting to earn the privilege to buy one from you .

The ESB dome is currently being molded and the ESB mask will be based off of an ANH casting. As always, Bookface and I will study photos of the test pull over Skype to discuss what optimizations are needed for the best look possible. I don't mean for this to take so long but hang tight, as ESB is very close to being unveiled.

I've been struck down with a couple of colds recently, which is slowing things up a little. I just got over one last week, only to start sneezing and coughing again on friday! Hopefully next week I will make some progress on the ESB dome.
