Darth Revan Mask Progress

A friend of mine wants to make a Darth Revan costume for 501st submission when he turns 18 in August. Since I want to get into fiberglass casting, I figured this is as good a place to start as any. I've started to sculpt the mask out of clay.

This was the first thing I've sculpted in about 5 years, so I think it's pretty decent so far. It's still quite rough; It will take a bit of finessing to get it right before I mold and cast it. However, it seems to be a good size, and quite accurate from what we can tell having looked at Revan's mask from every possible angle in game. If you have any comments/critiques/Vogon poetry, I'd love to hear it. Just kidding about the Vogon poetry though, you leave that to yourself.

great work. its hard to work from a computer model the textures make the work so it hard to make it something real.

my critic point is the eye its to wide i thing

Lookin good so far. Looks like you can add some girth to the lower part. Looking at the pics it looks like he has some black cheek plates. Make it easier to cover the face that way at least.

The bigger trick is to make the mask comfortable once its done.

You might be right about the cheeks. Thanks for catching that. We had initially thought of that part as soft mask. I suppose it would make more sense to sculpt those, and if we like them, great. If not, it's easy enough to dremel them off the cast.

From what I've seen on these boards, wouldn't it be easier for you to mold it on an already cast head (preferably of the guy to whom the mask is going towards)? That way you can get proportions et all correct? Regardless, it looks really good!

It might be easier to sculpt the mask size wise, that's true. But first I'd have to do a life cast. :confused:unsure:wacko :confused :confused And that's just more material cost than we're willing to put into the project if it's just going to be a one off. If we were making a whole run of Revan masks, and would have money coming in to offset the cost of all those materials, maybe. But clay is pretty cheap, so we'll see how this goes.
