Quasimodo Darth Vader helmet - Version II

Thank you so much for the encouragement. This could not have been possible without bookface. The ANH paint has been studied, debated and emulated for many years by different people, but I feel that bookface has come the closest.

I also hope that this also proves that one does not need to recast the eFX - or go to an eFX recaster on eBay - in order to see a believable and solid representation of Vader. All these years of studying Vader and sculpting have paid off!

ESB fans, you have not been forgotten. The first ESB dome pull has been done, and we're going to do a paint test soon!

You're welcome mate! Well deserved!
You nailed so well the ANH look that has even surpassed the EFX!!!
It's like taking a look directly to the Tantive screen used!

Alberto

When you have a moment, Alberto, can you take some shots where you stand back 6 feet and zoom in without cropping? Thanks!

Quasimodo. :)

Mate You remember wrong, of the helmets You produced I have the ANH Darth Ugly in raw cast not the Quasimodo, Enrico has the Quasimodo!:D
I have just the Ugly ANH dome finished, regarding the facemask I'm not planning to finish it for the moment!:rolleyes I totally dig it raw as well!:thumbsup

I was judging from what I see from the pictures You're posting!

Regards,

Alberto

Okay, sorry, this was meant for enrico. :wacko

Here's what I've been able to come up with. They are not side by side shots, mind you. Photos courtesy of enrico, teet and illbethere1.

In the above, the frontal light source makes it difficult to discern the difference of paint finish to the domes. You can still see increased gloss on Quasimodo, and some of the "worn prop look" feel still survives but would be better seen under lighting from an overhead source. I think enrico used a flash. The eFX still looks marvelous in its own right. Two different photographic distances.

This one is fun. The eFX is probably closer to the camera than Quasi, and while it's handsome, bookface's paint work looks more organic, worn and lived-in like the original. Both images are color balanced differently due to different cameras, lighting, etc. but hopefully I was able to capture an eFX feel with Quasimodo V2. The mask, left, is owned by teet.

And here below is the armor that bookface did up for teet. I've pointed out that whether it's for Darth Ugly for for Quasimodo, the armor is the same. But greater consideration to paint is given to Quasimodo, and thus a much more involved treatment is given to the armor when being paired with Quasimodo:

Thank you for posting these.

The EFX is still awesome but I can really see the differences like the dome flare, paint job, and what not.

A Quasimodo V2 is in my future for sure.

Ironically I originally wanted an idealized, smoothed out, perfectly painted ANH Vader. I'll have an ESB and ROTJ For that but ANH must be dinged up and hand painted, etc. It just looks wrong otherwise.

A quick update on ESB!

Bookface has made a successful test pull of the dome and shot it in black, and the sculpt is holding up very well.

The V2 ESB dome comes from resculpting the V1 ANH dome as opposed to simply taking the V2 ANH dome and chopping off the widows peak, doing minimal rim mods and calling it a day. (In fact, recasters modifying the eFX into ESB in this fashion create an oversimplified and incorrect wrong that is an eyesore to the trained eye.)

ESB is my second favorite. Thus I wanted this to look organic and to radiate ESB from the get-go. There is a specific shape and silhouette to the screenused ESB that I wanted to capture through the sculpting process, allowing me to add back detail and subtle nuances to shape whereas vendors typically over-sand and flatten out the surface nuances of their domes, and then rely on slick, glossy paint jobs to wow the crowds and to hide the loss.

In fact, more sculpting work was done for my V2 ESB than what went into V2 ANH such that to the trained eye they will appear as different sources!

Now, onto some paint tests.... More to come!

Mac and Bookface, I enjoy reading your threads so much because of the great enthusiasm you have and the hi-fedelity you achieve inspires me to do the same in my own builds. Please keep up the outstading work!

OMG, Good Golly, Holy S#!$, Wow, Dear Lord, there are no wor,.................

One good thing about having to sell most of my collection (going for the glass is half full approach) is I get to replace a lot of it with better stuff.

Amazing work.

Can't wait to get one.

Please set one of these and an ANH V2 aside for me for the fall. (y)D:cheers
