PZ's SW Prop Collection - UPDATE: Authentic Symmetrical Hales Grenade - All Real Parts Obi-Wan Lightsaber

Taking a brief break from stressful Obi parts this week, I focused on finishing my Exactra 19, 20, TI-2000 collection.

After lots of buying and selling (probably went through about 10+ calculators), I finally feel satisfied with the Exactras here.

Triple blue...
TI-2000 on the left was very difficult to find, but luckily a source in Germany came through for me. It's got a beautiful light blue PCB with frosted, flat bubbles. I feel very lucky to have found this frosted, flat bubbles, which I believe to have been used for Vader ESB Hero saber.

Exactra 20 in the middle has the highly coveted red LEDs with frosted, rounded bubbles. It was pure luck that I even own this; I wish I can have another because it's so beautiful, and the LEDs glow like jewels under light.

Exactra 20 on the right was just bought from Ebay. It has a dark blue PCB with a clear, flat bubble strip.

I used to think that there was only one version of regular blue PCB, but it turns out there's 2: light blue vs. dark blue.
I personally think the light blue variant was used for Vader ESB Hero because of the casino reference pictures that show light hue under the bubbles. However, the Propstore photos show slightly darker blue.

Still not sure which one I should use for Vader ESB; if you have any idea, please let me know!

From top to bottom:

1. Frosted, round bubbles: I have a pretty convincing evidence that Vader ANH V1 saber used this exact variant, so this will go on my ANH V1 in the future.
2. Frosted, flat bubbles: Vader ESB Hero
3. Clear, flat bubbles: Obi-Wan ANH
4. Clear, flat bubbles: spare
5. Clear, flat bubbles: cut and polished for Luke ANH

It's crazy how many small variants exist in Exactra calculators lol
As always, it seems the prop makers picked the rarest of the rarest variants for screen used sabers.
For now, I'm happy to leave behind Exactra hunting :)

I can't make any promises on those super rare red LEDs, but if you need any assistance with Exactras, just let me know.

Blue board blue board!!

I’m curious to see the “beautification” results on that grenade. I thought it already looked great.

As part of the beautification process on my Hales, I sent the frag body as well as a Browning booster barrel to newmagrathea
Big thank you to Dustin; he has done amazing work stripping the paint/gunk off the Hales
AND did the impossible by unscrewing the booster from the barrel! (made me realize, I gotta go to the gym more often)

Also, big thanks to Edraven99 for helping me with the FINAL missing puzzle — windvane — of this all-real parts Obi build :)
The end is literally inches away, though I plan to blue the frag body and make some modifications here and there in the future.

PrinceZip, would you please walk me through your assembly method? Cone adapter to windvane, grenade to Graflex clamp spacer (hollow vs. solid), and clamp to booster and handwheel?

I also noticed you wrapped the threads of the booster. Is that to protect the handwheel?

Thanks.

thd9791 thank you! I love the set up on your Obi as well, and I was super lucky to have found that minty Hales :)

cdyoung Sure thing! In my next update (probably later this week), I'll go through all of the big & small parts and explain my assembly method.

In May, I embarked on a real parts Obi-Wan Lightsaber quest.
After 5 months of gruesome conquest, I've finally completed what many people consider to be the hardest SW prop to make.
Here is my first iteration of All Real Parts Obi-Wan Lightsaber!

Here's the complete breakdown of parts...
Real Female Derwent Balance Pipe
Real Mk.1 No.3 Hales Grenade
Real Graflex Clamp
Real Vintage OP Transistors
Real Exactra 20 Bubble Strip
Real ANM2 Browning Booster
Real Armitage Shanks Sink Knob

The Arcadia Workshop Emitter Cone
Bespin Custom Props Heat Sink
Roman Props Hollow Spacer
Roman Props Transistor Spacer

For the construction, I wanted disassembly to be as easy as possible,
So, I used friction fits for the BP and the sink knob with double-sided tapes in conjunction with the hollow spacer for other parts.
Surprisingly, the entire thing feels very solid, and no need to worry about parts flying off.
Later, I will add magnets to further secure the connections.

Like I said, this is just the first iteration of the prop as it needs more improvements.
In the future, I plan on bluing the frag body, installing a d-ring, beveling the bubble strip, shaping the weld, adding magnets, securing the transistors, re-doing the BP finish, etc.

But for now, I want to briefly put this aside and focus on other props that I wanted to complete.
That said, I hope I did justice for Ben and the real Tunisia lightsaber.

Q: What did it take to complete this build?
A: Everything... Money, connections, patience, hours of research, and luck (though a wise man once said "no such thing as luck")

Q: Was this Obi-Wan journey worth it?
A: 100%

Q: Would I do it again?
A: No, but I would recommend others to try it before it's too late. These real parts are getting harder and more expensive to find each day.

There was no way I could have done this alone, and this truly is a work of collaboration.
With that said, I would like to thank these amazing people for helping me complete this Obi-Wan lightsaber!

Again, I will continue to improve this Obi in future updates.
Even though I will not build another, I'd be more than happy to help others in this quest.

The photo above is a little preview of what's to come next :)
